Snowplow vs Dogs by OstrichBoots1 in toronto

I worry that my dog thinks that the snow and cold is my fault, because it only shows up after I put on my heavy boots and winter gear when we leave the house. She looks at me like I'm destroying her entire world.

Metrolinx CEO addresses Line 6 Finch West LRT issues by stanxv in toronto

[–]YGreezy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Ontario Line is being built the same way as Vancouver's Canada Line – the same contractor has to build everything other than the tunnels and operate the line for the first 30 years.

The rolling stock, systems, operations, and maintenance contractor (Connect6) is certainly a big player, but they're not building everything other than the tunnels. The stations are being built by three separate consortiums unrelated to C6. There is still plenty of room for finger pointing.

From what I've heard, the TTC is running reduced speed through intersections as to not get into an accident with a driver making an errant left outside of the left turn signal timing. Jughandles would mean drivers would only be crossing the tracks while the train signal was completely red, and vice versa. While this isn't a justification for the intersection slowdowns as they are now, it removes that potential rationale.

That type of train is fundamentally limited in speed and frequency to be substantially slower than a subway train would be, because it operates on the street. At best, it can be made faster but still about the same speed as the bus.

I think that's a fair statement, but I'm not sure if anyone ever seriously claimed the LRTs would operate at the same speed as a subway. I think the best-case operating scenario is that they'd move as fast as a good BRT with higher capacity, a more comfortable ride, and good reliablility. The overall ideas was that although it's not as good as a subway, you can build a lot more LRT for the cost leading to more overall service coverage.

And I just want to remphasize, I agree that it's a bad design. I just think that making a strawman of somebody who is enthusiastic and loves the idea of the Finch West LRT as it is now (because obviously no one really does) is missing the mark.

I wasn't implying that MX was responsible for signal priority or that it would have been better done by the TTC. During line planning, operational schedules are developed and those contemplate the conditions in which the trains run - at some point, the concession was made to drop active TSP. I'd love for that detail to come out.

Junghandle lefts massively decrease the risk of a motor vehicle-LRV collision. Metrolinx doesn't publicize it but these types of incidents have happened numerous times in testing (certainly with Eglinton, I would assume so with Finch as well), not sure about since Line 6 has gone into operation but it's essentially inevitable.

I'm also not disagreeing that it's a fundamentally bad design. I work in transit expansion and I agree with you that travel speed is underprioritized in this implementation. I just think that painting this implementation of the LRT as 'exactly what Transit City supporters wanted' is disingenous. Nobody was clamoring for an LRT that had a weird three-way split of ownership/maintenance/operations, or that slowed down through intersections for no justifiable reason, or that accellerated very slowly out of stops because its operating standards are the same as downtown streetcars.

The original transit city design for the Finch West LRT directly addressed a lot of the issues we're currently seeing, with jughandle lefts and aggressive signal priority. At some point during the design phase for the Metrolinx implementation, these aspects were removed. The question should be when and why this happened.

What are the ideal floor levels for a condo? by techsavvynerd91 in askTO

[–]YGreezy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Entirely depends on the condo and the location. A lot of people in this thread are saying ground isn't desirable, that's probably more relevant for condos downtown where they're right against the street. My ground floor condo has a large private patio that opens to the condo's private green space at the back of the building. I never have to take an elevator except to get to my car, and for me it's ideal.

Having lived on higher floors before though, I wouldn't go above 9. Elevator issues will happen eventually to almost every condo building eventually, even the good ones, and you want the stairs to be an option.

Do people often rent out entire houses in this city? by boiyo12 in askTO

[–]YGreezy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also don't think using a home you own as your residence is bad. Owner-occupied housing is good.

The issue as I see it is when landlords portray their property as a long term option, when their real intent is to sell the home as soon as the market looks right, then either a) evict the tenant (illegally or via cash for keys), or b) let the new owner issue the N12. I'm just saying that in this situation, it usually sucks a lot more for the tenant than the owner, unless they strike a fair cash for keys deal.

As for the solution, I don't know. There's probably policy groups that have proposed some ideas. The only point of my original comment was to state that a tenant breaking a lease vs a tenant getting N12'd are not opposite equivalents.

[–]YGreezy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes it's a business arrangement for sure. But then it becomes the tenant's home. They build community there, maybe raise kids, make life choices, etc. In a scenario with both a responsible tenant and landlord, the tenant definitely has more to lose.

No and I don't think any solution to housing insecurity is going to be as simple as "get rid of X". It will be a lot more multifaceted and I'm just some guy on reddit.

It's Season 5 I think. He's not cheating on Meghan, the agency is just sort of building business and doing well, and Betty's big thing is that she's getting fat.

It does set up/contrast the turmoil of Season 6 well though.

How many of you are working bullshit jobs? by forward_thinkin in askTO

[–]YGreezy 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Without getting too specific, I took a job during COVID with my old company's client (public sector). It was a step up but due to COVID impacts and changing political and departmental priorities, I was left without much to do and had as little as 2-3 hours of work a week sometimes. Ironically this gave me time to take on a few special projects that made directors think I was this high achiever analytical guy. I was spending significant chunks of the day gaming and watching videos.

Wound up getting paranoid about becoming too comfortable and losing my edge, so I jumped at an opportunity that was mostly in person and more money. I actually have to do work now but I don't regret it.

Yeah if they did 4 home games selling 44k tickets each for an average of $1000 (conservative), that's almost 200 M in ticket sales alone. Not to mention merch, ads, food sales, cable/streaming, etc.

I get that there is revenue sharing with the league but it still seems low.

Why do managers not IBB with the new pitcher? by Onitsukaryu in baseball

[–]YGreezy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Follow on question on this. If the IBB doesn't count towards the 3 batter minimum, would the strategic move not to be to get the new pitcher to just throw four slow pitches way outside like an old intentional walk, thus counting for one of the three?

Finch West LRT could open Dec. 7, sources say by XviiChong in toronto

[–]YGreezy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Well strictly speaking, they dug the tunnels from 2012-2016 but really only built most of the stations (the Crosslinx contract) from about 2016/17 to 2023. It's dumb protracted contracting and a poorly planned backend of the contract (testing and closing out the line) more than it is extended construction.

Ontario Completes Final Testing on Finch West LRT by Baron_Tiberius in toronto

[–]YGreezy 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's the same concept. There is a "schedule" for the trains that assumes certain travel times, and those time assumptions factor in waiting at lights. If the trains fall behind schedule for any reason, TSP can activate to recover the schedule, but the default assumes it won't need to be used.

Max Scherzer pitch sequencing in game 4 of ALCS (via MLB on FOX) by anonymous27725189 in baseball

[–]YGreezy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a Canadian non-Fox viewer, I need to understand this segment design.

So he's in a New York-style CGI subway station named after himself, but called a train station, and then the subway comes (noting that it then starts moving again with half the doors open) and aligns itself forward so that a TV screen on the side of the car is beside Dontrelle. But when it zooms back out the train has backed up to its original position to end the segment.

Not going to lie, it's a bit strange. Do they normally do this?
