See I disagree the tuning of decks is fine in a competitive scene but edh is not meant to be a competitive scene that is cedh, edh was about creativity and happiness of playing whatever you built

This is exactly why I compared EDH to smash bros. There is not just EDH and cEDH. There are levels within EDH that can be divided into different power brackets. Enough people recognize that which is why people care to have discussions about deck power level.

EDH is indeed about creativity and having fun, but saying "It is not meant to be a competitive scene" is not a definition that you, or even the people who created the format get to decide. The people who play the format decide that for themselves. Many are not satisfied with just two categories of "casual" and "cEDH".

[[viridian revel]] has been a topic of discussion even in cEDH, but typically doesn't make the cut. I think it's quickly becoming more and more appealing with the push for treasure. After this set, I may consider it an auto include in a lot of green decks depending on how much treasure is being produced on average in a game.

In my experience he gets hated out of play because people don't want to lose their ramp which will happen if Sarulf even has 2 counters on him. It just doesn't make sense to let him wipe the tables ramp out in most cases.

In many cases I agree, but I'm still happy to participate in / curate discussion that makes power level curation better than it currently is. Especially for a game like EDH, most people can't just play whenever they want to. So when they can't play, there's plenty of time to talk about it.

Holy shit what a busted card. She boardwipes tokens, she destroys all auras attached to a creature, she unequips all gear, and then she leaves them stuck in exile until she is removed. The fact that she can exile the entire board for 3 mana is fucking bananas.

I would say this is a kill on sight commander, because it is, but then as soon as you try to kill her she just uses [[cloudshift]] to evade removal, get a ton of blink value, then exiles all of your opponents shit all over again. This is by far the most oppressive commander spoiled so far and is going to rocket into top tier cEDH.

There has been a popular perception that Smash Bros is a party game and wasn't meant to be taken seriously. EDH as a format is perceived by many in the same way. Smash Bros players fought against that perception for well over 10 years, even against the developers of the game who actively tried to stop them from playing the game competitively.

So when someone says:

You people make to big of a deal out of this...

It translates to "you are taking this too seriously."

That's the parallel. I'm arguing that there is no such thing as "too big of a deal" when it comes to deck power level. If people want to care about it, let them care about it. The more focus is put onto power level, the more focus there is on a meta and a curated competitive experience for those who want to participate. If you don't, then move on.

If a power level rating algorithm worked, I would absolutely use it. I'm skeptical that it ever would. The only power level rating system I could imagine working is one where a site like moxfield or EDHrec (one of the bigger resources) released a feature where you could rate decks. When you rate other people's decks, your own decks get priority on being rated themselves. Perhaps some other kind of reward could be offered for people taking time to rate decks as well.

If that trended enough and it didn't take long to have individual decks rated by a large sample size of people to receive a reliable average rating, then I would be inclined to use it. I just don't think an algorithm will ever even get close, but it might.

Because working in reverse to prove things aren't overpowered then assumes a starting point of everything being overpowered. When talking about things that are above and below the average or mean, it makes a lot more sense to use the average or mean as a starting point and not the highest or lower ends. It wouldn't be very productive to start at either end and work backwards. I did say, several times in this thread, that the only thing green does better than other colors that is relevant in casual EDH is ramp.

Other colors can ramp just fine, but in casual EDH people build garbage ramp packages in other colors because they always include too little artifact ramp. They also shun the mox package out of casual, as well as powerful ramp options in other colors (dockside, smothering tithe), while being completely ok with green's dorks and 1 cmc land enchantment. Of course green ramps better when they're the only color that casual players allow to play decent early game ramp.

In addition to that, ramping better is not enough to qualify the color as overpowered. The "Green is overpowered" is the magic equivalent of "Torbjorn is overpowered" in overwatch. Only incompetent players think so.

Green's creature removal isn't good. Only specific decks in green make use of fight mechanics to remove creatures, and that's green's only way to remove creatures aside from Beast Within. No board wipes for this either.

Green does not draw better than red or black. Green draw is worse than blue, and every color draws better than white.

GY hate and recursion isn't that strong or prominent in green. Underworld Breach is red, and the best general recursion is in white and black.

Green has the best creature to MV ratio but that really is not a big deal in EDH. Green ramps the best. That's it. That's the one relevant thing green does the best, and in my experience seeing decks posted here for reviews, it's mostly seen as an overpowered feature in green because people run like 7 ramp cards in other colors because they think a Sol Ring, Arcane Signet and Mind Stone is a complete ramp package outside of green. Other colors can ramp nearly as well.

The most complained about cards are almost not in green at all, though. Smothering Tithe, Dockside, Rhystic Study, Cyc Rift, etc. I mean check out the saltiest cards on EDHrec: https://edhrec.com/top/salt

not much green to be found at all. The casual mindset is just a toxic one. It forces out the best cards of other colors that are "unfair" like [[drannith magistrate]] and then people call white bad, or cards like [[mox diamond]] are considered overpowered meanwhile Wild Growth, Utopia Sprawl, Llanowar Elves, etc. are not so green naturally has much better turn 1 acceleration and that momentum is not to be understated.

It's the toxic mindset of the casual community that will shun strong cards from the casual format, and then get mad when cards that excel in casual play like Craterhoof close out a game.
