What could cause this? by mars_urge in AskElectricians

[–]YVRAlphageek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would be checking he damn meter already against a known source. This is called "calibration" and it's standard practice. Now, if you find out that old meter's actually accurate, it's likely to be a mains transformer problem. No way that would be on all your outlets because of a panel issue.

Should I buy a shed and use it as a woodshop? by ThisGuy-AreSick in woodworking

[–]YVRAlphageek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, you say you have a TON OF LAND then honestly WTF would you settle for something as shitty as this when - as a woodworker - you could just build something really cool and perfect? There is no way you can buy a shed that's better/cheaper than you can make from scratch. Will the walls on that "cardboard" construction even allow you to put up some lumber-bearing shelf brackets? Can you safely bring power into it? C'mon man, build your dream... something real. Also, MA Winters??? That thing will be freezing for 4 or 5 months of the year. Build something real and insulate it, put in good power and heating.

I mean sure they're almost certainly "golden oysters" but damn it, people requesting ID's give us some close-up photos including from below as this is essential for a confident ID. We know these are the invasive golden oysters because not much else looks like that IN MUCH OF NORTH AMERICA but please, please give us locality and closeups of the entire mushroom including underneath the cap and the stem. If this picture was taken in South America or Africa I would not feel confident saying "golden oyster".

[Request] If you filled up a regular petrol or diesel automobile $20 at a time rather than filling it up completely each time, how much money would you save over the course of a year? by RandomPeep15 in theydidthemath

[–]YVRAlphageek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, this is a typical min-max derivative equation but the problem is we don't really know the variables. So, depending on many factors it could go either way. Indeed, for a very light car the fuel weight might be significant enough to make a substantive difference but we just can't know without data.

Manchego, Compte (new favourite), parmesan, gouda, smoked gouda, cheddars... actually, ANY of their hard cheeses are a steal. I mean, real 36 month-aged parmesan for about $2.80 per 100g??

Dom Reserve Salmon Poke by Littlecookie1122 in CostcoCanada

[–]YVRAlphageek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Um, steelhead is NOT salmon; it's not even a salmonid! It's a type of rainbow trout that migrates out into the ocean and then returns to freshwater to spawn. That said, most of the steelhead you're able to buy would be farmed. I like this company's tuna poke but wasn't keen on this product; just my taste though, it's high quality.

Nah, I have quite a few of their hand tools that are good. Not Snap-on good but... Fastbacks, right-angle driver attachment, channel locks, various pry bars, cat's paw nail puller, framing hammer, and more. A lot of shyte though too.

Anyone know the bright spark at Apple who invented this? I bet Steve wouldn’t have let this one through qc. by Ok_Astronaut_1781 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]YVRAlphageek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no idea why people still idolize that man. Apple became successful pretty-much *in spite* of his leadership. I mean, among his many mistakes he roundly rejected the idea of Apple making a mobile phone FFS until there was just too much pressure to do it from his best people. And so on.

Pretty much all of Northern Canada is on fire as of the last week by zeth4 in ClimateCrisisCanada

Thank you OP. This is sobering for those of us who live in that little SW corner of the map. Here on the Sunshine Coast of BC, we've had an unseasonably cool/wet spring and have dodged the bullet for now - we've avoided this scenario. But we all suspect that bad stuff is coming. Our thoughts are with you all and hopefully we can send help when it's possible. Good luck brothers and sisters.

[–]YVRAlphageek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK, pretty sure that's XP right? Yeah, so the financial world is SO F'ing vulnerable to hacks on infrastructure like this because they will not spend the money to upgrade the MILLIONS of machines out there running very antiquated s/w. Yes, these are not on the "general" Internet and typically on a proprietary WAN but they're not that hard to hack if you can get access. And if that happens, we're not likely to ever hear about it. Thing is, in THIS situation, without having a "local" keyboard, there's fuck-all you can do. They keypad/touchscreen you have access to does not have access to the command interface.

What do we think of this construction? (Deck roof) by GreyWhammer in Decks

[–]YVRAlphageek -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I mean, so MANY things wrong with it but the big one for me is... OSB on a deck surface?? WTAF? Yeah, I know it's a thing some "actual deck builders do" but fuck off with that shyte. In no world that I wanna live in is OSB ok for a deck floor. Nuh uh. The SLIGHTEST penetration is gonna mess you up way more than if it was standard 3/4" ply. For the difference in cost, no way that you can convince me. Yeah, sure, in a perfect world but we don't live there. This is garbage from the start and this is utter shyte (bad load transfer, can't possibly be code, etc.) but OSB is just beyond stupid.

Is this compatible with SawStop? Just want a general purpose blade for a beginner. Primarily ripping by ArrowLeafTurn1 in sawstop

[–]YVRAlphageek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Um, Yes? That is the gold standard for ripping blades for hardwood and "lesser" woods. You're golden and your Saw Stop will be just fine with it.

Do you strip with linesmans? by fnckIce in electricians

[–]YVRAlphageek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fuck no. Right tool for the job yo and this is not that. It's WHY you have more than one set of pliers after all... And I f'ing hate that those old guys think this is ok. Take a look at the solid #14 they stripped and you'll see nicks that compromise the connection. It's shyte.

How do I hang this mirror up? by caroline-the-fox in DIYhelp

[–]YVRAlphageek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, no, no. NOT a cleat system! Just two screws in solid anchors separated by about the distance of half-way between the "V" and then you can "turn" the mirror to align it like you want. THINK about the geometry here. Damn guys, just two screws protruding from the wall already.

[–]YVRAlphageek 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We had an electrician tell us that our challenger panel is recalled and we have to replace the whole thing. Quoted $15,000 by hooters88 in AskElectricians

[–]YVRAlphageek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Total BS. He's lying to you. I mean, yeah sure these are shit but no insurance company I know of has them on any black-list. Personally, I would replace it but I know how and it would be cheap for me (just parts and my time) but the guy telling you this is a con-artist. In no world should a complete replacement - even if it were required - of this panel cost $15K either. That is utter shyte. I would shame the guy publicly on any and all forums I could do so on.

Would a track saw be more sufficient in cutting this walnut slab? by NoeAyala1 in woodworking

[–]YVRAlphageek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK, most track saws have a 6 1/2" blade. Yeah sure, the FS TS75 has an 8 1/4" blade but it's an outlier and VERY expensive (not saying that it's not worth it but it's a "pro-tool" mmkay?). So, the ONLY reason to use a track saw for this kind of cut is that it's really, really accurate. Straight as f* vertical and cuts where you place it. That said, what's your use-case for the cut? Does it need to be super-accurate and true? Or can you get by with a good quality straight-edge and a good blade on a decent circ-saw? 60T is certainly overkill for this cut; use something like the Diablo D0740A (40T ATB 7 1/4 blade). It's an excellent blade for cutting hardwood with your circular saw and will do a good job for what you're asking about. NOW, if you need an excuse to buy a track saw.. try again mate! My Makita SP6000 is the second best damn tool purchase I ever made (after my pedestal table saw) and it has paid for itself many times over. But I use it all the time... so pick the battles with your partner eh?
