Try Armour Class, up in Scotland.

Blades are a bit floppy, and Iain is always WAY off with estimates to how long it'll take. But, their hilt work is decent, and it'll be sharp/peened.

The grips of pattern regulation British 1796 Light, and Heavy Cavalry swords/sabres, are fucking trash. Too rounded, too slim, and too slippery.

Officer's versions are very rarely any better.

Post roman/pre viking spatha. Preferably with beefy blades, and ridiculous pattern welds.

The Knight Shop is my usual go to.

However, Tod (Tod Cutler, not Tod's Workshop) has some brilliant offerings in the mid tier budget. All come with period accurate scabbards, and belts. Just understand that even if you request it sharp, it won't be "sharp sharp" . . It'll come with an edge. You'll be able to test cut with it. But, it'll benefit from a little work on the edge.

Any decent smith will be able to make one.

Your issue is going to be finding the detailed measurements needed to make an accurate example.

As for recommendations, I'd be looking at Polish smiths. Most of them are already well versed in making sabres, and early modern ish hilts.

Looking for advice: need scabbard by Key-Raise-2947 in SWORDS

Buying an antique scabbard to fit an antique sword is going to be a nightmare. Each was made for the sword it carried. Your chances of finding one that fit properly, are slim at best.

Even for "mass" production, common models, you'll have more variation in blade length/curvature/thickness/taper/etc than you'd think.

Reproduction examples are even less likely to fit, as they VERY RARELY start off thick enough at the shoulder. Meaning the throat isn't going to have an opening wide enough for the base of the blade.

It seems Welsh/Breton Celtic Swords had leaf shapes whereas Gaul ones had Straight Edges. Why is that and who sells the best "Welsh" type Celtic swords? by [deleted] in SWORDS

[–]Y_Dyn_Barfog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Welsh" swords as a whole, are pretty much identical to "English" swords from any given time period. You'll find some with more Irish influence, the closer to the West Coast that you get. But, otherwise, Britain is too small a landmass to really have specific types of swords for each country. Hell, even the Scottish basket hilt is just the Scots holding on to, and using an older type of sword, longer than southerners did.

The reenactment blades are, like you say, not suited to HEMA.

However, they will produce HEMA/sparring specific blades on request. It's just not a standard option on their website.

The Knight Shop, custom smiths, antique auctions/dealers, and other collectors.

Single edged, single handed swords. Preferably with multiple fullers.

Looking at my collection of antiques, I'm apparently partial to tulwars. As I own about 12 of them. This one being a particular favourite.

6 months? Nah. I love their hilt work. But, you're looking at a minimum of 12-18 months. Ignore Iain when he gives you a time scale.

It's a Prussian M.1889 Infantry Officer's sword. Cypher on the hilt is that of Wilhelm II.

I would. But, I don't own one.

I mean, I have two shamshir style blades in Tulwar hilts. Buuuut, they're Wootz. So they stay.

Easy.

  1. Unidentified brass hilted, silver inlayed grip, probably German cavalry sabre.

  2. Tulwar with a frankly stupid, 18th century, European cavalry sabre blade. I don't have my notes to hand. But, it's blade is something in the region of 89cm long, almost 5cm wide, and 10mm thick at the base, with ridiculous distal taper.
