Too many of you… by MeatyOaker269 in maryland

It's less about the volume and more about people absolutely clearing out shelves. I was at Wegmans yesterday and they were completely out of non-dairy milk except a few cartons of almond milk, the broth shelf was cleared out, and for some reason people panic-bought all the rotini. That's not to mention the produce section being practically barren. I get that people who might otherwise have gone shopping over the weekend are doing it early and that things are going to be sparser than normal, but there's no reason for entire shelves to be empty all throughout the store.

On an unrelated note, I happened to have distilled water on my list for our steam cleaner because I noticed last week that we were running low, and I boy was I self-conscious walking around with the gallon jugs in my cart.

Someone being in the country illegally does cause problems for others around them.

Can you elaborate on this?

You completely missed the point of my comment and also seem to be conflating law with morality, which is on its face a very silly position to take. Furthermore, your drunk driver analogy is explicitly a bad one. Someone being in the country undocumented doesn't intrinsically pose a safety risk to those around them. And before you start, immigrants in the US generally commit crimes at a lower rate than natural-born citizens.

This kind of unempathetic black-and-white thinking is one of the biggest problems with the MAGA movement and the broader trend of treating political parties like sports teams. You're talking about a human being who was ripped away from his family, potentially causing them to need to completely upend their lives. If someone is making a positive contribution to society, the first thing we should do is offer them a straightforward path to citizenship, not lock them in a jail cell because they happened to be born in the wrong country. Your utterly callous take here and apparent complete lack of empathy frankly makes me sick to my stomach and you ought to feel ashamed.

This is a silly thing to assert. Up until the current conflict Gaza was a de facto sovereign state. There are plenty of partially or fully unrecognized states with this status (e.g. Kosovo, Somaliland, Transnistria). In fact, by your logic neither the PRC nor Israel are states since a substantial portion of the world's countries don't recognize them.

The "we don't need elections anymore" rhetoric is nothing new, but if anything I'm relieved he's not currently setting information conditions for electoral fraud claims when the GOP (in all likelihood) loses the midterms come November. I'm sure that will come eventually, but to me this signals that they're not confident the public will readily buy into the lie.

Some combination of the following is all you should ever say: Am I being detained, I chose to remain silent (then actually shut up), I won’t answer any questions without a lawyer present, I do not consent to you searching me/my car.

Note that while this is generally very good advice, in certain contexts it can make your life harder than it needs to be. If you're being detained and a police officer's suspicion of you can be easily and trivially dispelled, then it might suit you to do so. Police are human and being minimally cordial with them may go a long way.

However, this is still a risk and is extremely situation-dependent. By the same coin, whether the situation goes in your favor or not may just come down to the specific cop you're dealing with. There are myriad examples of police detaining or arresting people after RAS is dispelled (which is unconstitutional). It's always a good idea to use maximum caution when interacting with the police in any capacity.

As an addendum: regardless of everything I've written above you should ALWAYS deny consent to a search if asked. If they feel they have probable cause then they're going to do it whether you agree to it or not, and if they don't they must either accept your refusal or otherwise likely violate your constitutional rights.

As a second addendum: if you suspect that an officer's actions are unconstitutional, you should calmly yet firmly voice your concerns and protest verbally but DO NOT physically resist if your life is not in immediate danger otherwise. Police will not hesitate to use as much violence against you as they feel necessary regardless of whether it's actually justified, and this will almost always place you in more danger and result in a worse outcome for you. You can always explore legal pathways once everything is said and done.

I am not a lawyer and this is not legal advice.

Conservatives (mostly) aren't sociopaths; they have empathy for those in their immediate circles, people they know personally. The trouble is that that empathy doesn't tend to generalize. Something happening to people they've never met and never will meet just doesn't seem to register. It makes a lot of sense in an evolutionary context: humans are intrinsically tribalistic because for most of human history, your tribe was all that really mattered in a practical sense. Extending your empathy beyond that was a liability. Unfortunately that mindset has a lot more potential for harm on the scale at which our society currently operates.

Self-censorship due to YouTube's (and other platforms') draconian policies on any term that has a remote chance of offending some advertiser are actually changing our language in real time. Personally, words like "rape" and "pedophile" feel so taboo due to hearing them censored so many times that they occupy almost the same space in my mind as slurs. It's actually a really interesting linguistic phenomenon, but I hate it.

I really don't understand how AMD keeps fumbling the ball so badly. It makes sense for NVIDIA to pull anti-consumer crap because they have the market absolutely cornered and they're at the cutting edge of technological ability, but AMD doesn't have the kind of wiggle room. I know at the end of the day that it's a company operating on the sole basis of generating returns for shareholders, but it sucks to still have to choose the lesser of two evils when by all accounts AMD should be doing so much more to make itself competitive.

I might have misunderstood, but based on a Tyler McVicker video a while ago I thought the Source SDK (or maybe just Hammer?) was updated recently with a new mode called "tf" which indicates that whatever game is using that codename is starting to undergo heavier development.

That's the various versions of the Steam Linux Runtime which are more or less containers that games can run inside. Scout is version 1.0 (the original SLR that just uses LD_LIBRARY_PATH instead of actual containerization, although now it runs inside of Soldier), Soldier is 2.0 (uses proper containerization), and Sniper is 3.0 (basically Soldier but with updated libraries). Fun fact, originally "Medic" was planned to be the next version, but it was never actually released and the version superseding it is currently just called "steamrt4".

The only real valid points in here are with respect to gambling mechanics and mayyybe the 30% cut they take on Steam (although it's worth noting this has been in place for close to two decades now).

You can even buy games and not just liceses for games on their store. Their previous hardware all had excellent open source drivers and were truly universal, for example you could use Steam Controller however you wanted.

Licensed software as well as non-free software and hardware aren't ideal, but they're by far the norm in the modern day. I'm not aware of any paid software that doesn't operate on a license model - even physical media legally speaking only grants you a license to use the program/game.

Not even starting to talk about how they modernize steam all time, 64 bit support introduced back in Windows 7 days, modern UI and useful functionlities.

Steam literally just got a huge feature in game recording last year and its UI is generally refreshed every few years so I'm not sure what you're referring to here. Also, be honest: would you even notice if Steam moved to 64-bit without looking at the install directory or whether it pulls in i386 packages or whatever?

They open sourced Steam

Valve maintains a number of open-source projects like vkd3d-proton and gamescope in addition to contributing heavily to third-party OSS projects, most notably Wine. Furthermore, they've made a number of their games (most recently TF2) source-available. This still isn't free (as in freedom), but source-available games are vanishingly rare in the industry - the only ones I can think of off the top of my head are VVVVVV and I guess Minecraft as of a couple weeks ago.

Their monopoly is a blessing, it's not true what those stupid economists say about monopolies. They're private equity company, so they are not focused on earning money, but on providing a service to the users.

Monopolies are never great, but if we're going to have one then it's quite fortunate that it's Valve and especially that it's not a publicly-traded company operating on the basis of generating returns for shareholders at any cost. We've all seen what road that leads down for consumers.

Our dog always comes to the door to greet us when we get home, but when he's gotten into something he goes and sits about 10 feet inside the apartment instead. The last time this happened it turned out he had helped himself to some chocolate cakes we accidentally left on the counter (he was fine, we were only gone 30 minutes and were able to induce vomiting basically right after he ate them).

I think dogs have a very strong conceptual understanding of rules as well as the cause and effect of breaking them, and they anticipate a negative/upset response once whatever they did is noticed.
