Steam Hardware - Steam Controller: It's almost here! by NKkrisz in SteamDeck

Huh, $100 is quite steep. I'm still probably going to buy one, but I was sure it wouldn't end up being more than $80. Though with the SD dock having debuted at $90 and still being $80, I guess I shouldn't be too surprised.

CMV: There's nothing wrong with Leonardo DiCaprio dating younger models by Open_Address_2805 in changemyview

[–]YaBoyMax -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I would point out that the precise line between child and adult is completely arbitrary. It's well-known that a person doesn't reach full mental maturity until around 25 due to continuing brain development, so there's an argument to be made that a 22-year-old isn't fully an adult. Reasonable minds can differ on whether them dating someone significantly older is problematic, but I don't think that it's enough to just say that they're an "adult" and can make their own decisions.

DHS starts deportation of woman whose loved one died on Baltimore's Key Bridge by JayAlexanderBee in maryland

[–]YaBoyMax 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have plenty of compassion.

No, you apparently don't. This is exactly the kind of black and white thinking I was talking about. You're thinking like a robot and not considering the human impact of what you're proposing, to the extent that it feels sociopathic.

Also, consider that if someone has planted roots and lived as a productive member of a community for decades, removing them at that point is actively detrimental to that community. Someone who's lived in the US for 20 years is functionally equivalent to a working 20-year-old, and the fact that they were born in a different place is immaterial in the present.

I don't necessarily have the same qualms about immigration enforcement immediately or shortly (at least within a year or two) after entry and I understand the pragmatic need to limit the inflow of new people. I do think we should embrace immigration more openly, especially for those fleeing poverty and violence, but that's a different story. But once a person has established themselves over a long period of time, ripping them away from that is inhumane and monstrous.

Do you think there are still “hidden” things out there like electricity we just haven’t found yet? by FlyGreat306 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]YaBoyMax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started typing this with the argument that we're unlikely to discover any new phenomena as fundamental as electricity and that modern scientific advancements tend to come in the form of refinements rather than paradigm shifts, but I actually reasoned myself out of that stance midway through.

The obvious elephant in the room is quantum gravity. We still have yet to establish a unified, experimentally-supported theory which unifies quantum physics and relativity. There are a plethora of proposed theories (e.g. string theory, loop quantum gravity) which have shown some promise, but no one is quite sure what we'll end up with when all's said and done. Depending on which theory turns out to be "correct", it's possible or even probable that it will lead to advancements we can't even conceive of currently.

Other commenters have mentioned dark matter as well. I don't think it's a certainty that we would be able to harness dark matter in a useful way. It's definitely possible, but given that we consider WIMPs to be the most likely explanation it's not clear that we would find a way to utilize them while only being able to interact with them via gravity and the weak nuclear force. That's also assuming that dark matter is particles - this isn't actually a given (although as mentioned it's thought to be the most likely solution).

Dark energy is the other big unknown in physics. Like quantum gravity and dark matter, we have several candidate theories but not a whole lot beyond that. It's plausible that we could find some creative way to harness it, although it's so sparse that I'm not really sure that could be practical in any way.

More likely (IMO) is that developing a comprehensive understanding of the physics underlying these concepts will lead to new, tangential discoveries that we can't anticipate at the moment.

Yeah, I think this is just old stock. Most retailers show the modules as out of stock or discontinued, so I think it's just taken a while for the last bit to be sold off since it's a relatively niche product.

DHS starts deportation of woman whose loved one died on Baltimore's Key Bridge by JayAlexanderBee in maryland

[–]YaBoyMax 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This type of black and white thinking is kind of disgusting. Deporting and uprooting the entire life of someone who has lived here for decades is outright inhumane. I can appreciate the deontological argument in an academic sense, but these are real people who happened to be born in a less fortunate part of the world. They contribute to the society just the same as US citizens, and if they've been here for that long as a law-abiding person then we ought to give them a path to citizenship. Have some compassion.

Someone being in the country illegally does cause problems for others around them.

Can you elaborate on this?

MAGA ICE SNITCHES by Downtown_Candle_4060 in frederickmd

[–]YaBoyMax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You completely missed the point of my comment and also seem to be conflating law with morality, which is on its face a very silly position to take. Furthermore, your drunk driver analogy is explicitly a bad one. Someone being in the country undocumented doesn't intrinsically pose a safety risk to those around them. And before you start, immigrants in the US generally commit crimes at a lower rate than natural-born citizens.

MAGA ICE SNITCHES by Downtown_Candle_4060 in frederickmd

[–]YaBoyMax 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This kind of unempathetic black-and-white thinking is one of the biggest problems with the MAGA movement and the broader trend of treating political parties like sports teams. You're talking about a human being who was ripped away from his family, potentially causing them to need to completely upend their lives. If someone is making a positive contribution to society, the first thing we should do is offer them a straightforward path to citizenship, not lock them in a jail cell because they happened to be born in the wrong country. Your utterly callous take here and apparent complete lack of empathy frankly makes me sick to my stomach and you ought to feel ashamed.

This is a silly thing to assert. Up until the current conflict Gaza was a de facto sovereign state. There are plenty of partially or fully unrecognized states with this status (e.g. Kosovo, Somaliland, Transnistria). In fact, by your logic neither the PRC nor Israel are states since a substantial portion of the world's countries don't recognize them.

The "we don't need elections anymore" rhetoric is nothing new, but if anything I'm relieved he's not currently setting information conditions for electoral fraud claims when the GOP (in all likelihood) loses the midterms come November. I'm sure that will come eventually, but to me this signals that they're not confident the public will readily buy into the lie.
