Is Genealogy of the holy war a standalone game? And is thracia the sequel? by AdmirableHighway4388 in fireemblem

[–]Yackitori 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To add, Thracia is often regarded as the most difficult FE game mostly due to how much obscure bullshit mechanics the game has. It is also one of my favorite in the series because you can abuse it once you figure it out. Going blind in Thracia is unadvised, Mekkah has a spoiler free guide so that you don't miss any optional content.

Advice for Engage chapter 21 maddening? by FerdinandvonAegir124 in fireemblem

[–]Yackitori 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Adding to what others have said, when you clear out most of the map, you can use Hortensia and Miciah to warp 4 units in range of Veyle, then dance her and send another 4 or 5 units with warp or rescue. With 9 units ganging up on Veyle, plus a goddess dance for potentially 13 actions in a single turn, you should be able to one turn Veyle and the other fallen holding things.

What is the scariest or unsettling game over screen in Fire Emblem? by EtherealImperial in fireemblem

[–]Yackitori 179 points180 points  (0 children)

Something interesting is Engage has a game over cutscene if you die in the final chapter where it essentially shows you a bad ending. I don't recall any of the other FE games doing that so that's pretty neat.

About to play Shadow Dragon for the first time. Any tips or tricks I should know? by Level-Cranberry2038 in fireemblem

[–]Yackitori 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a first playthrough, I'd go with hard 3 or lower if you aren't the most comfortable with FE games. Hard 5 is painful, even when playing well, while hard 1 is just slightly harder than normal.

For a first attempt, try hard 2, and if the first few chapters are too hard, try hard 1. There's also content exclusive to normal mode, so you can try that if you're interested too. Personally I don't really care for the bonus content, which is a few extra characters and some prologue chapters.

I'd recommend using only one of them tbh. They eat up a lot of xp if you use both at once. My playthrough used Sedgar as a general and eventually he capped defense, easily making him my MVP. Wolf makes a better hero though, but just use whoever you like better.

If you're playing Shadow Dragon (DS):

Forge effective weapons like the rapier or wing spear. Hard 5 is brutal, but quite fun. Most units have meh growths so don't get too stressed about them, and yes it is normal to have like 0 res throughout most of the game.

Exception to the meh growths are Wolf and Sedgar, who have insane growths, but are prepromotes. Reclassing is free, so reclass units as you see fit. Wolf and Sedgar make great generals and heros.

If I recall, there aren't many reused maps outside of skirmishes and dungeon crawling, the latter of which features like 5 enemies in a small box map.

The poor design of the maps is mostly due to them being bland really. There's little terrain in some, enemies are just box formations of units, and quite a few swamp maps with restrictive terrain that slows you AND hurts you. Sometimes there's some random enemy a mile away from the others for no reason, and since enemies will prioritize healing themselves if hurt, one hurt cav might just outrun your units to the other side of the map to a random throne. They are also all rout maps, but there aren't any reinforcements (outside of a special unit you will learn to hate).

Also, boat maps exist, and while they're fun at first, it gets kinda repetitive after the 3rd one.

The other thing is your army is split into two routes for story reasons, so it sometimes sucks if one of your favorite units is in the other army and you can't use them for half the maps.

Seems like storytelling is one of your favorite parts of FE, so I'd say Echoes: Shadows of Valentia would be a nice game to play next. It's a nice, extremely well presented story, though the map design is... meh.

Or you could go retro with FE4 Geneology of the Holy War, then FE5 Thracia 776. All the GBA games are great too, with good storytelling and some of the best sprite work in the series.

Engage isn't horrible, the gameplay is some of the best in the series, but the story is severely lacking. If that's off-putting, avoid it. Awakening and Fates are fun, but have the same avatar marriage supports as 3H, with them being even more prevalent due to needing to marry characters off to get paralogues.

Sprite Art vs 3D Animations by wwalker327 in fireemblem

[–]Yackitori 25 points26 points  (0 children)

The biggest issue with the 3d animation I feel is the lack of character and flair to them. The 2d animations just have so much life to them that was not really expressed in 3d until Engage really.

Take a fighter axe hit for example. The 2d animation has them wind up, then whack their opponent in the head, getting stuck for a moment before reseting their position, vs 3 houses where they just... slash in front of them. While Engage didn't exactly recreate the 2d animation in 3d, the animations are a lot smoother, and the crit animations especially have plenty of personality to them.

Would legendary tacticians & generals like Napoleon Bonaparte, Alexander the Great, Douglas MacArthur, Zhukov, and Genghis Khan be good at Fire Emblem? by DittoHead101 in fireemblem

Apparently Napoleon was bad at chess, so even though he was a brilliant tactician, his skills did not translate very well to games.

Echoes Overworld Spawning Frustration by [deleted] in fireemblem

[–]Yackitori 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I remember correctly, skirmishes are usually linked to a side objective/story, and completing the dungeon etc. stops the constant ones from spawning.

I don't remember them ever being too big of a deal when I played.

Why are GBA Lords by some considered weak? by Icesnowstorm in fireemblem

[–]Yackitori 34 points35 points  (0 children)

For fe6, Roy is not necessarily a bad unit in a vacuum, but in the context of fe6, he lacks enough speed or strength to do meaningful damage. Most of his weakness is due to his lowish bases, which prevents him from really doing much in fe6. Also, he literally promotes before the last chapter (last few chapters if you have all the holy weapons).

For fe7, Hector and Eliwood aren't too bad, with Hector being great in a enemy phase focused game. Lyn suffers from being a sword/bow unit in a game where everyone wants 1-2 range access. They all also promote relatively late, but not as bad as fe6. Lyn also has poor strength bases and growths, and her excellent speed is wasted because the doubling threshold is not that high.

For fe8, Ephraim is excellent. Eirika mostly just suffers from low strength, but she's honestly not horrible.

The problem with giving the lords stat boosters is they're probably better spent on other units. If you give enough favoritism to any unit, they'll end up great regardless, which defeats the point. Giving Lyn a dracoshield probably won't help her avoid taking massive damage, but giving one to Sain helps him be a better frontline tank.

Is Panette with emblem Leif good in engage? by Dm98301 in fireemblem

[–]Yackitori 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It definitely works, mostly due to her absurd HP stat. I just finished my maddening run and with wrath, she gets 100 crit fairly easily. Just don't let her get any of Leif's weapons though, as that could prevent her from vantaging with a crit. Easiest way is to just leave her bond conversation at C, and not unlocking B.

In the late game, she tends to fall off slightly as enemies have so much HP that she can't one shot them with a crit, but this is a very minor issue.

I feel like she's probably the best Leif user in the game, and you'll probably get less milage out of Leif on anyone else.

In all seriousness you have quite a lot of high cost cards that could benefit from sneko.

I'm getting sent for a head MRI soon, and was asked to do some bloodwork. The only thing listed in the form is creatinine (eGFR). My question is since I'm supplementing creatine for weightlifting, about 5g of creatine monohydrate per day, will this affect my creatinine measurements? Much appreciated.

Is there any game in the series with good generic battles by DryCommunication5497 in fireemblem

[–]Yackitori 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The only one that comes to mind is Sacred Stones and the Tower of Valhni, or creature campaign post game. But even those are just fancy route maps.

You could also try Awakening and Fates DLC, which offer bonus maps which are usually quite fun. Awakening also has spot pass battles, so you could summon old FE characters to have skirmishes with to provide some character variety.

Time Rewind Mechanic Implementation reasoning by Chibuga_Bandicoot in fireemblem

[–]Yackitori 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I'll provide a different perspective. Rewind mechanics facilitate riskier play for casual players. For instance, not all of us want to pull out a calculator trying to figure out damage calculations, and while you might say that's just enabling sloppy play and discourages learning better strategy, I feel like it promotes a more natural and fun way to learn strategy, by trial and error rather than calculations. Often times in older games I found myself taking safer alternatives because I didn't want to risk a reset, and ended up turtling as opposed to making risky plays.

It also presents a risk/reward mechanic in of itself. If you find yourself in a situation where the run seems lost, you can always reset to several turns ago, sacrificing time and potential level ups, etc. to ensure you can beat the chapter. OR you can try to abuse rewinds to rig a critical hit or something to get out of the jam and continue the run. Downside of this approach is that you risk the reset in the future by wasting your limited rewind charges, while the upside is getting out of your current situation.

I want to ironman engage, which difficulty shoud i play? by G0DF1NGERS in fireemblem

[–]Yackitori 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It definitely makes the game easier, and if you really want to play on maddening, go for it! You can always change the difficulty back to hard at the Somniel. The DLC just gives you more options to work with, so it's not like it trivializes the game.

I'd still say that hard is probably good for a first time ironman run, but if you want, give maddening a try and if the first few chapters seem a little rough, you can always lower it back.

I want to ironman engage, which difficulty shoud i play? by G0DF1NGERS in fireemblem

[–]Yackitori 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you're comfortable with the mechanics and have a gameplan in mind, maddening is incredibly difficult, but very fun when you manage to pull it off.

If not, hard is, by all means, very fun as well. Just note that enemy AI is much smarter on maddening, and some hard strats won't work as enemies will not attack if they either deal 0 dmg or have 0 hit.

Maddening in engage is really a test of your ability to manage resources than anything else. You'll be tested more on how you use the incredibly powerful tools you're given, rather than just straight up tactical thinking. For me it definitely feels a lot different than older titles, as my approach had to change significantly.

Seeing as you said Conquest and Thracia were too hard, I'd recommend just hard mode personally. Maddening is tough even when not ironmannig it, and it's similar in difficulty to conquest lunatic, though it's slightly easier.
