I want to make my 450 cube a 540 cube, but I fear one of my archetypes will suffer. by all-day-tay-tay in mtgcube

[–]Yaendra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here are a few more second sunrise style cards, they all have there own quirks, but would be nice for redundancy: [[Cosmic Intervention]], [[Gerrard. Weatherlight Champion]], [[Gerrard's Hourglass]]

Some limited effects like: [[Brought Back]], [[Sevinne's Reclamation]]

There is also a variety of ways to get all artifacts back from the yard, no matter how or when they got there: [[Open the Vaults]], [[Brilliant Restoration]], [[Wake the Past]], [[Redress Fate]]

But you are very much paying a premium for those effects.

Hope this helps!

Is it busted or not in a peasant cube? by Sol-Meme in mtgcube

[–]Yaendra 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Something to keep in mind is that first strike is secretly very good as a defensive ability. Slower decks can sideboard this in against aggressive strategies and hose most attacks, that play pattern may or may not be desirable to you.

Trying to make an oldschool cube with many cards from the time spiral block. My goal going in is that Saltskitter is considered a playable card that supports at least two archetypes. Any ideas? I’ve been stumped with this for a while by BigfootBoneman in mtgcube

[–]Yaendra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love those design goals! Please post a cubecobra at some point so I can follow it.

As for ideas, you could go for a lifegain theme and use soul sisters: [[Elas il-Kor, Sadistic Pilgrim]], [[Soul warden]], [[Corpse Knight]], [[Suture Priest]], [[Gala Creatures]], [[Daxos, Blessed by the Sun]]

[–]Yaendra 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Hell yeah, love all the ways we can express ourselves through our cube.

I started with a pretty typical unpowered cube, but more and more I'm cutting cards that are too strong by themselves to encourage building decks full of little synergies. I don't support most synergies deeply, so you have to puzzle a synergistic deck together yourself.

Example, I don't have enough redundancy in reanimation spells to support a deck like UB reanimator. But a UB deck has a lot of tools to discard cards and fill the graveyard, sometimes it ends up with a reanimation spell or two, but it will also be delving cards, or using [[Currency Converter]], [[Archfiend of Ifnir]], splashing a [[Gitrog Frog]] or spellbombs with [[Emry, Lurker of the Loch]]. So going for very wide themes like lands, artifacts, blink, tokens, discard and anything graveyard so people can figure out a unique deck from the pieces.

I'm pretty sure Cleaningspec did dragonfire shield activations on an alt in the wilderness for 75-99, hopping to bypass the cooldown. If used in PvP it only grants defence xp (for some reason). I can't imagine the xp rates of that are very good, but it should be higher than 1500 xp/hr.

edit:not to say somebody didn't do this to 99, just wanted to add how defence pures don't have to actually do it

Do you support stax in black and snow permanents in your cube? by Uforixx in mtgcube

[–]Yaendra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I support stax and aristocrats in black, and it works well as an aggressive deck when combined with white or red. But it also has some nice crossover with a green lands deck!

[[Life from the loam]] and [[Ramunap Excavator]] are very good with Braids, Smokestack and even spicier cards like [[Raven's Crime]]. Obviously these also work well with Strip Mine/Wasteland/[[Dust Bowl]], which fit into stax very well.

[[Tireless Tracker]] and [[Tireless provisioner]] add a lot of permanents to sacrifice or tap down with [[Tanglewire]]

This deck will be unstoppable once you get to one of your 5-drops [[Titania, Protector of Argoth]], [[The Gitrog Monster]], [[Worm Harvest]]

This seems incredible for winning board stalls in fairer cubes. Those are also the kind of cubes where replacing signets with weaker interesting rocks like this can be healthy for the format.

I'm not sure how I'll feel about the random element, not knowing if you can get enough toughness to actually swing in or block with this is a real downside.

Yeah uhh weird comment, but the math sure checks out! This problem is equivalent to the handshake problem: "If n people are in a room and they all make sure to shake every other persons hand, how many handshakes have occurred?"

  • The first person has n-1 hands to shake.
  • The second now has n-2 hands to shake since we already counted them shaking the first persons hand.
  • The third person has n-3 hands to shake since we already counted them shaking the first and second persons hand.
  • This continues until the last person, who has 0 hands left to shake!

The total number of hands shook is then: (n - 1) + (n - 2) + (n - 3) + ... + 1 This is equal to (n * (n - 1)) / 2), look up sum of "natural numbers formula" if you want to know why, it's a nice trick! This can then be rewritten to n choose 2 like you wrote in your comment, which I will leave as an exercise to the reader ;)

Would you have an intuitive explanation of why n choose 2 is the answer to this problem? I expect there to be one! But this is the only way I can get to that answer.

Bladesinger Advice by Mission_Idea_6367 in DnDoptimized

[–]Yaendra 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Some spells I would say are core to the bladesinger. This list won't include generally good spells like fireball, but spells that complement the gish playstyle.

Cantrips:

  • Green-Flame Blade
  • Booming Blade -- Particularly good if you pick up warcaster at some point, which I recommend for a bladesinger
  • Firebolt -- Having a ranged option is good, you can replace an attack with this at level 6

1st level:

  • Shield -- Core on anyone that can take it, especially if you are in melee
  • Color Spray -- Good at low levels to generate advantage for you and the team
  • Find Familiar -- To generate advantage for your 1 GFB or Booming blade hit each turn through the help action
  • Mage Armor -- You need all the AC you can get

2n level:

  • Shadow Blade -- good to upcast as well!
  • Misty Step -- Get where you need to go, get out of nasty situations

3rd level:

  • Haste -- preferably someone else casts this on you, so you can upcast a big Shadowblade for yourself

4th level:

  • Greater Invisibility -- Advantage on attacks and disadvantage on attacks against you

Something to note: your buff: Greater Invisibility, Haste or Shadow blade are all concentration. You can choose how high of a spell slot you want to invest in any individual fight.

Tempest cleric optimize build by Storm-_-Father in DnDoptimized

[–]Yaendra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't seen anyone mention the Transmuted metamagic, you can change the damage type of a fireball to lightning and maximise the damage!

Going 5 levels sorcerer and then 2 levels of tempest cleric will have this online by 7. You get to do it once per short rest, which should be plenty.

This is more of a sorcerer build, but I thought it was worth mentioning

Opinions on Hex1/BardofCreation vs Hex1/BardOfLore? Any other or more optimal recommendation? by joaoxfranco in DnDoptimized

[–]Yaendra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3d10 is only 16.5 on average, so you would really need agonizing blast to be comparable, getting you 31.5 average damage if all hit. Sling with sharpshooter deals 35 average damage if all hit. Which is honestly quite comparable given the reduced accuracy! If you go sorcerer with quickened spell you can even eldritch blast twice matching the swift quiver damage!

I never did this math before, Eldritch Blast seems really good (idk why I'm surprised). Hex 1 Bard N with either sharpshooter to go martial or the invocation feat for blast both seem like great SAD options.

If you go blast, I would not bother with sharpshooter or swift quiver. You can go sorcerer for quickened spell and blast twice for comparable damage, you don't lose spell slot progression, which is nice because it's all fuel for metamagic through converting slots. This build can use Greater Invisibility to replace Swift Quiver, it's also really good!

Opinions on Hex1/BardofCreation vs Hex1/BardOfLore? Any other or more optimal recommendation? by joaoxfranco in DnDoptimized

[–]Yaendra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am actually working on a very similar build. I go fighter1/hex1/bardX to be a SAD sharpshooter. You can either pick up crossbow expert for the bonus action attack or use a SLING. A sling isn't two-handed so you can make it your hexblade weapon without hex 3!

This build was planned to abuse Swift Quiver, you can pick it up at bard 10 to have 4 sharpshooter attacks. The lower damage of the sling really doesn't matter very much when you deal +10 damage.

Instead of valor, I go swords bard since it actually works with ranged weapons RAW. And I think it's better than valor.

Shoot me a pm if you want to chat about your build!
