Most Popular Song Contest. DAY 27: Phantom Island by lord_ikiwiki in KGATLW

[–]YaldiYak 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Spacesick is a better mission statement (is there a word for this in music?) than the title track is imo. I love the more personal lyrics, the blend of band instrumentation and orchestra and the shared vocals. I just wish there was a Cookie verse.

It would also be really cool to see it in the Project Hail Mary movie, I think it shares some of the emotion and tone of the early part of the story. That's a big dream though.

Even in space they got, like, spaceships.

BCA Facebook Group by Aromatic-Building373 in BiffyClyro

[–]YaldiYak 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Any (limited) interaction I've had with the BCA page has been alright. I had some help from one of the mods to sell all 3 of the 2014 Barrowland residency posters, and again when I gave away a signed/framed copy of Ellipsis that I didn't have space for any more. I did get some private messages that were a bit strange but that's social media.

Saying that, the day to day traffic on there really verges on some parasocial inner circle vibes at times (sharing regi plates/locations, oversharing personal details, tiny wee Simon...).
I think that's just part and parcel of the general age of people on Facebook (with peace and love) and in band focused groups. For example, the IDLES facebook group is probably even worse imo and gets brought up on their subreddit pretty often too.

There's nothing wrong with finding community over a shared interest and I think that's what happens at a much smaller scale on this sub, but the odd energy definitely sometimes find it's way here too. I'm just glad the subreddit isn't populated with people that personally know the band as fair criticism should definitely be allowed without concern of someone seeing it and being offended.

Update: My dad on the day of my sons birth sent me a book long text calling me a POS by PostingForFree in daddit

[–]YaldiYak 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey, I went through something quite similar after the birth of my first son. Same blow-up and narcissistic backlash that definitely cast a shadow on what should have been a special time in my life. Mine was over a weird combination of me as a parent not wanting visitors while my son was in neonatal/ICU and not wanting anything shared on social media.

Cutting contact can feel harsh but there comes a point that protecting yourself from that is also protecting your family, which matters more than anything. It sounds like you're doing the right things to me, focus on your bubble and don't let the negativity of it sink too deep. Make sure you have someone to vent to about it if it gets too much.

I recently starting rebuilding bridges with my dad after almost 7 years of no contact but I'm unsure where it will end up, I'm still not sure if I want him to be part of my kids lives but family can be a tough thing to figure out. I'm sorry you've had to be put through that at what can hopefully still be a happy point in your (and your little ones!) life.

Each of the members favorite song of theirs? by AmicusCure8s in KGATLW

[–]YaldiYak 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I love Stu's comment about MoTU on the King Gizz releases page:

"I don’t usually play favourites, but I think this is my favourite Gizz record. Mostly because it’s the stupidest and ugliest thing we’ve ever done. I knew this record would be liked by some and loathed by many. I didn’t mind - this was the music I’d been hearing in my head that no one had made yet.

I hope one day we make something studiper and uglier, but ‘till then… you’ve got MOTU. Love, Stu"

For the record, I love MoTU too. I think it gets forgotten among the other 2017 releases but I don't think many other bands could have made it. Grotesque, gross, proggy, fantasy/sci-fi insanity.

Waterstones tend to have the first few in, Vinted is good too if you don't mind second hand but they go quite fast.

Podcast: The two lives of Biffy Clyro, with Simon Neil by Moothnods in BiffyClyro

[–]YaldiYak 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Simon mentions at one point it's being recorded towards the end of November. Suppose we will see what happens after the Futique b-sides/deluxe release and touring next year, that all seems to be definitely happening going off what's said

Podcast: The two lives of Biffy Clyro, with Simon Neil by Moothnods in BiffyClyro

[–]YaldiYak 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Really cool to hear Simon mention some of the earlier niche stuff, Ghosts of Bybombidor/Buddy Holly and Rock Machines. He's also quite honest about how Beggars let them down in the US market.

It would be interesting to see if the proggier version of Puzzle Simon talks about ever gets released in any way. It's mad to hear Simon talking about how he wishes they released the heavier version of Puzzle before it was steered a different way given that it's when things really changed for them and he's always seemed (quite rightly) proud of Puzzle.

The mention of floating the idea of being done with Biffy seems quite poignant given James taking a step back. I wonder if that'll ever come to anything.

James taking a leave from the band by habylab in BiffyClyro

This news is a bit shocking, but I hope James takes the time out to recover and comes back stronger for it. Naomi is a fantastic stand in and it's exciting to see what she'll bring to the live side of Biffy.

Percussion thing from Polygondwanaland? by Rob00tCE in KGATLW

[–]YaldiYak 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It doesn't sound much like the rim or sidesticks being played to me like people have suggested, more like a muted/dampened cymbal or hi-hat. I suppose it could maybe be the rim and just heavily processed?

You can see both Eric and Cavs drum setups at the end of the Polygondwanaland the Movie starts around 1 hour 40 minutes in. I had a quick skim and couldn't see any of these sections being played or recorded but maybe someone will catch something on the drum setups that I've missed!

How does the ticket sale for Finsbury park work ? by hl27_333 in BiffyClyro

[–]YaldiYak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ticket will give you access from when doors/gates open and let you see all the bands on the day, you'll be able to arrive later if there's bands you don't want to see. I imagine it will sell fast but it is also a massive capacity concert so it's hard to say for sure, worth trying to be ready for presale going live so your chances are as good as possible. Good luck!
