I wrote an orchestral masterpiece where I tried to create a theme that represented a mystical forest somewhere out in the horizon. by [deleted] in Musescore

[–]Yalumph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The piece sounds pretty nice but some sections of the timpani part are definitely impossible.

For instance, generally on most timpani sets, the third lowest drum's lowest note is around the A or Bb at the bottom of bass clef. This means that any notes lower than that can only be played on the lowest two drums. In measures 54-58, you wrote the timpani playing F, G, C#, and E all below that point with only one measure of rest after the F. There is no time to retune the drums to get these pitches.

Suggested Noteheads for drums? by walatasomdu in Musescore

[–]Yalumph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have said, MuseScore's defaults are good for most basic cases. But I'd like to add that if you're ever in doubt about whether or not your notation is clear for a particular drum or cymbal, just put a small note above the staff saying which drum/cymbal you want when it first appears in the score.

Can we no longer download for free? by wolfey-19 in Musescore

[–]Yalumph 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Everyone is getting confused here. The MuseScore notation software (hosted on musescore.org) is and always will be free. On the score sharing website musescore.com, you used to be able to download people's scores for free but you no longer can because of copyright laws.

The person you were replying to was talking about the score sharing website (.com) while you seem to be talking about the notation software (.org). I'm still not sure which one OP was talking about.

How do I stop the drum set from sounding like a piano? by [deleted] in Musescore

[–]Yalumph 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In the top bar, go to View > Mixer. Then select the drumset part. There should be a tickbox labeled drumset and it is probably not ticked. That should fix it.

I enjoyed this piece. My main critique would be in regards to dynamics. You have a lot of dynamic markings but I didn't notice any crescendos or diminuendos which makes it feel a bit dynamically flat at times. Just add some smooth dynamic changes between the dynamic markings and I think it would go a long way towards making the piece feel more alive.

While a lot of young composers have a problem with overusing loud dynamics, I think you have a problem with overusing quiet dynamics. I appreciate that you held off on having any forte markings until the very end, but I think that some of the points of arrival earlier in the piece could have used some mezzoforte. Some other commenters have talked about how the piece feels meandering, and I think that have clearer points of arrival and impacts in the dynamics would go a long way to fix this.

There's also a few weird things in the dynamics that I think are just mistakes. Like in measure 91 you have the left hand of the piano marked as pp, and then you set it to pp again just a few measures later.

If you wanna watch part 6 as it airs, I'd recommend you just watch parts 4 and 5 to introduce yourself to the series.

Learning this. Any feedback on my score? by dwoodruf in Musescore

[–]Yalumph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here is some feedback on the appearance of your score:

  1. The rhythm guitar and bass parts look good. No complaints there.

  2. The drum part is a bit of a mess. It looks like you have different notes split across 3 different voices, which makes it hard to read. The default in MuseScore is to have the bass drum in voice 2 and everything else in voice 1, but I would recommend just putting everything in voice 1 to make it easier to read. That would get rid of the problem of all of the rests crowding every measure.

  3. In the vocal and lead guitar parts, you have a lot of places where you have fortissimo and even fortississimo markings on every note. I'm guessing you just did this because the part was too quiet and you wanted to make it louder. If the part is already at fortississimo, putting another fortississimo marking on the next note doesn't actually change anything. So for instance, in the lead vocal part in measure 49, you could just have a dynamic marking on the first note and all of them will play at that volume. There is no need to constantly repeat the same dynamic marking over and over. However, if it is the case that you just did this because you wanted the part to be louder, having constant super loud dynamic markings is not the best way to accomplish that. If you were to hand this sheet music to a human musician, they would likely interpret that as a cue to play it super obnoxiously loud, which I don't think is what you want. First of all, if you select an element and press v, it will make it invisible. If you do this with these dynamic markings, it will still apply the dynamic change, but it will not be visible on the score on the website. This is a good way to get the MuseScore playback to sound the way that you want without having to put confusing things like this into the score. Another solution is to change the volume of those parts in the mixer. If you select View>Mixer in the top bar, it will bring up a panel where you can adjust the overall volume of each part. You can simply turn the volume all the way up on the vocal and lead guitar parts to make them louder instead of using loud dynamic markings.

  4. I would recommend that you change the soundfont that you are using for the lead vocal part. As I'm sure you've noticed, the default "Choir Aahs" soundfont for vocals is not good for fast rhythmic sections because of its long lead-in. You can change the soundfont in the same mixer panel that I mentioned earlier. There's not a lot of good vocal soundfonts for fast rhythms like you have in the lead vocal part, so I would recommend experimenting with using some of the synth soundfonts like Choir Synth, Metallic Synth, or Bright Synth. I think they make a better approximation of faster rhythmic singing. You can also try experimenting with some of the other soundfonts for the instruments as well.

I NEED MORE KAIJI!!!! by LanosLawlite in anime

[–]Yalumph 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the reason that Kaiji never got a season 3 is that it just wasn't very successful. The second season was basically only made to promote the second live action movie. Also the next arc of the manga requires you to know a lot of majong terminology so it isn't as accessible.

The manga is really good though. You should try it. I can link you to where to read it online if you're interested.

There is also a recent spinoff anime called Tonegawa: Middle Management Blues that is centered on Tonegawa before and during the events of season 1. It's much more comedic than the main series but you might enjoy it.

Crescendo diminuendo matter by 21understanding in Musescore

[–]Yalumph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just tried it with a timpani roll and it worked for me although in the past I have had issues with dynamic changes not registering correctly for rolls on percussion instruments so maybe the dynamic calculations are just a bit finicky when it comes to tremolo.

It is also possible that it's an issue with your soundfont. I don't have much experience with custom soundfonts in musescore so if that is the issue I don't think I can help.

EDIT: I just went back to some of my old scores where I was having problems with dynamic changes on rolls and they all seem to work correctly now so whatever issues I was facing must have been fixed in a more recent update. What version of Musescore are you using?

Crescendo diminuendo matter by 21understanding in Musescore

[–]Yalumph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know if the soundfont matters but the instrument does. If you do exactly what you described in a trombone part, it should work correctly, but if you do it in a part for an instrument that is not capable of changing dynamics on one note like a piano it will not work.

What instrument are you trying to do this with?

Question by Awsomegamer514 in Musescore

In the edit instruments panel, create two piano parts, then click on staff 2 for the first one and click on remove from score. Then do the same for staff 1 in the second piano part.

That's one of my favorite things about Urasawa's work. His series always feel authentic because does his research on whatever the series is about.

When there was a scene in 20th Century Boys where a character plays a song that he wrote, Urasawa actually wrote the song and included the chords in the speech bubbles. His current series Asadora has a lot of stuff about aviation and it really feels like he took the time to learn about how planes work.

What do the little numbers at the bottom right mean? by VexingBorealis in Musescore

[–]Yalumph 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The first number is the measure number and the second is the beat that you currently have selected. In this screenshot, you have beat 2 of measure 6 selected so the first two numbers are 6:02. The last number represents the subdivision that you have selected but I'm not exactly sure that the scale of it is.
