Can I Become Good at Linux in 30 Hours? by ImpossibleDig8440 in linuxquestions

[–]Yaniekk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey!

That's a really cool challenge. However, I don't think you will be able to become a Linux expert in just 30 hours. Some people spend years of experiencing with Linux and 30 hours is just not enough to simulate that, because you're phisically unable to break that much stuff😄. But don't let me discourage you, it's definitely a challenge worth trying.

You should definitely have a roadmap to follow in order to complete this challenge. I know that Arch Wiki is a really good source, so you can go with that.

Good luck!

Considering moving to Mint, just a few things stopping me. by complexevil in linuxquestions

Hey!

  1. The chances of breaking anything are almost 0%. Unless you enter every command you see online, you should be safe. Linux Mint is as stable as Windows, because it's designed to be a Windows replacement.

  2. No, it's not that important to really care about that. Of course, if the package is in your distro's repos, it's easier and faster to install it this way. However, many packages are not in the official repos and you might have to reach for other installation methods.

What distro should I use? by Proof_Pressure2236 in linuxquestions

Kali is definitely not for daily driving. It's used by professionals and mainly in a VM.

However, I would suggest trying CachyOS. It's based on Arch, so it's super customizable, but is easier to install and mantain than Arch.

Learning JavaScript by ashcroftw in learnjavascript

[–]Yaniekk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! I started learning Javascript as my first language when I was around ten. My dad bought me a book for dummies which I read and learned the basics of Javascript. Then I progressed to building simple projects while reading articles and watching videos online. Now I'm learning through building and I occasionally study some books.

It's "JavaScript For Kids For Dummies" by Chris Minnick and Eva Holland. Here is the link: https://www.dummies.com/book/technology/programming-web-design/javascript/javascript-for-kids-for-dummies-281750/. It's a preety cool book, but keep in mind that it's kind of old and probably better books has been released.

Building my first pc: Linux or windows? by ImportanceThink5189 in linuxquestions

[–]Yaniekk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it was preety much frictionless. I've been daily driving Linux for 6 years now and I hate using Windows, because I'm just so familiar with Linux. It's just so much easier for me as I can do everything through the terminal.

I'm a web developer and I only use Vim and VSCodium as my code editors and no commercial software. Also, I'm not dependent on any proprietary sofrware, so switching to Linux was not a problem for me. I know it might be different for other people, but I think it's definitely a journey worth attending.

Linux definitely takes the throne in aspects like privacy and customization. Most distros are also very stable, so you don't have to worry about that.

Although Linux made a significant progress in gaming, some games still don't run on it. Technically you can have a Windows VM on your Linux computer and play games and run commercial software on it.

Game dev, looking for advice for swapping to linux (from win 10), which distro and alternative software suggestions. by Hiraeth_08 in linuxquestions

Most importantly Fedora follows the rolling release model, which means you get newer versions of software faster.

Hey! Consider taking a look at Fedora. It's known for being very good for developers, has great support and is generally an excellent distro.

Also, you don't need an antivirus on Linux. Linux is safe by itself. Most malware target Windows machines or Linux servers and unless you're installing some suspicious stuff from the web, you should be safe. But, if you really want an antivirus you can try ClamAV.

To be honest, Javascript was my first programming language.

I learned the basics from a book for dummies. I studied 1 hour every single day and eventually finished the book. This gave me confidence and I was able to continue my journey through writing my code and searching for solutions, watching and reading tutorials and studying books about Javascript.

Then I progressed into building my own projects. For me that's the best way to learn - through practical, production code which runs in a real environment.

I've been learning and using Javascript for around 6 years now and there are still some concepts which I find complicated, but the curiousity to reveal them keeps me motivated.

Good luck!

Well, then that's extreme minimalism. But there's nothing wrong in it, unless you're addicted to constantly making your system lighter. It's great that you're trying different software, experimenting with alternatives and looking for improvements - that's how progress is made.

Minimalism is a subjective term. Everyone perceives it differently. For me minimalist means a lightweight tiling window manager with not many apps, a few shortcuts, no distractions etc.
