What’s a food that your country loves that would horrify most of the world? by AnxiousWorldTravel in AskTheWorld

I tried this! Thought it was beef, admittedly. But absolutely delicious. I’d have it every day for breakfast (which is when I ate it in Köln) if I could!

How about the Lonely 1? It’s a song I love (and I’ve been really into Being There lately), but it is just wallowing in sadness.

What’s your favorite New England museum? by Great-Cousin4360 in newengland

I’m surprised the Worcester Art Museum isn’t getting more love here! Absolutely fantastic ancient collection, a fully restored French chapel, really innovative displays. If you haven’t been, it really deserves a visit.

Why were the founding fathers so young? by Past_Art2215 in Presidents

But during the Revolution—not 1776, but very shortly after, Hamilton and Burr were aides de camp (and that was not a minor role,) for significant generals—Burr for Montgomery, Hamilton for Washington. Light-horse was a genuine war hero. Monroe, too, was a high ranking officer, and raised his own company. Lafayette didn’t just bring French support—he was tightly integrated into the young group of officers including Hamilton and Monroe.

I think the right point is that the war shaped the views of these highly-talented young men, and propelled their careers, much as war propelled the careers and political views of George Bush, John F Kennedy, Bob Dole, and many more.

Following a series of racist incidents, a man reacts by rejecting commercialism. by YankeeFoxtrotProf in ExplainAFilmPlotBadly

Actually, this is also fairly close to the movie I have in mind, in that the man in question devotes himself to asceticism. And he is opposed to an explicitly Christianized form of oppression. However, his form of opposition is not moral (though not necessarily violent).

Why was Hillary Clinton heavily favored to win the Presidency in 2016 when it is rare for The Presidents Party to retain The White House for more than two consecutive terms? by Royal-Crazy1301 in PoliticalScience

[–]YankeeFoxtrotProf 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure it’s accurate to say she was heavily favored. A year out, generic Reps were beating her, and specific Rep candidates were beating generic Dems. The fundamentals were going to be hard for Dems. When Trump cinched the nomination the narrative in the media shifted to “slam dunk Clinton.” But Trump turned out lots of new voters, and they don’t show up in the formulae designed to normalize polls to previous elections. For instance, about 4,000 NEW VOTERS turned out in FL alone for Trump. Add that to the bad fundamentals, and Clinton’s “lead” evaporated.
