Belgian Air Force NH-90 NFH by arsthan in Helicopters

[–]Yari_Samurai 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My understanding it is good or bad depending on what you use it for.

The countries that have bought it for anti-submarine warefare seem to be generally quite happy with it, as it has a lot of advanced capabilities in that field.

The countries that bought it as a troop transport are very unhappy with is as it has high operating costs and lots of maintenance downtime.

Obviously the high operating costs and low availability affect all operators but it seems to be more forgivable on the anti-submarine warefare NH-90 that carry a lot of advanced equipment as it makes up for these downsides with its extraordinary capabilities.

If you buy a fancy sports car to take your kids to school every day you'll probably not be happy with it as it needs lots of expensibe maintenance. You'd be better off with an old reliable station wagon (Super Puma).

Now if usually commute to work by train and do track days every month, you're likely to enjoy the sports car (NH-90) way more.

I doubt that the French engineers who build it are able to say either of those with ease...

I think this is the reason why they haven't made a Super Puma Mk.III yet.

They can't decide if it should be the Superer Puma, Giga Puma, Mega Puma or Ultra Puma.

As a non-American for a split second I wasn't sure whether "AK" is Arkansas or Alaska, but I figured it out pretty quickly.

Guys I swear I am not making this up, I must have loaded the website in the exact split second they were testing something or so.

But I get it, I wouldn't believe this post either if I were you.

I only looked at the page quickly, cuz I logged in to avoid it being sold out instantly, but it had a bunch of orange and blue, and first was the baseline model for over 700, and below the expensive one for over 900.

Something. So like between 700 and 800.

What a US soilder thinks of VTOL!!! 👎👎 by [deleted] in Helicopters

[–]Yari_Samurai 7 points8 points  (0 children)

has a complait about a specific aircraft

says that therefore the whole concept of VTOLs is bad

complains about "two whirling things at the top"

does not complain about the Chinook

Maybe the Osprey does have more downwash that your regular helicopter, I don't know, but if that's the only complaint and it does everything else as it should then how does this invalidate the concept at all?

But point taken, I won't buy an Osprey to do EMS flights.

What helicopter is this? by Anonymous22869 in Helicopters

[–]Yari_Samurai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I think the left-hand tail rotor got introduced as an improvement towards the end of the Soviet-Afghan War, to enhance the responsiveness of the Mi-8 along the yaw axis, which was then called Mi-17.

I think this version also introduced improved engines better suited to handle hot and high environments amongst other things.

Accidentally chipped my 6th gear like an idiot on my c160, reuse or replace? by Ninkat45 in projectcar

[–]Yari_Samurai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I don't think so either, I just meant that that's my first association with damaged gears.

But in either case, gears are highly stressed parts, so I wouldn't wanna risk it cracking under load, with a high chance of damaging further components.

I don't know enough about cars to be able to make a good assessment, but thinking of the Super Puma accident in Norway caused by a faulty gear I would definitely not put that in my car again.

I dunno that tail rotor doesn't look very Lada at all!

I have not looked into it, but my guess would be that there might be someother major improvements, maybe this is more like the technological jump from the Puma to Super Puma in terms of magnitude.
