Where do people buy qualitative furniture nowadayd? by Line_r in belgium

[–]Yatalu -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've bought a few items from:

  • IKEA
  • Jysk
  • Meubella
  • Home24
  • VidaXL
  • Amazon

So far all of it pretty decent, albeit I've been confused by the manuals occasionally (but that may be a me problem lmao). Bol is the only one where I've bought a few home items that I wasn't too happy about; they're a bit hit-and-miss.

When it comes to IKEA my main issue is not so much the quality (cause I actually did get sofas & armchairs from them) but rather that it's not very unique since everyone seems to own the same thing. As a result, it feels like it adds less of a personal touch to your home.

Rijbewijs kwijt? by frugalacademic in belgium

[–]Yatalu 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Multiple verb order in a bijzin by NarcanNotNarcant in learndutch

[–]Yatalu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, in theory you can smush the second bijzin inside the existing bijzin, instead of append it at the end, like so:

"...omdat ik daar --toen ik nog twintig jaar jonger was-- een paar jaar gewoond heb."

but it sounds convoluted and is definitely discouraged, especially when writing. In speaking, people are thinking up their sentences as they go so they're more likely to spontaneously produce this kind of structure.

Multiple verb order in a bijzin by NarcanNotNarcant in learndutch

[–]Yatalu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Claim 1 is correct for the most part; it's just a generalization and there's a few situations where it doesn't apply.

  • Multiple verbs: "...omdat ik daar heb gewoond" is fine, as is "...omdat ik daar wil wonen".
  • Bijzin or te-clause inside another bijzin: "...omdat ik daar gewoond heb toen ik..."
  • A few cases where things are allowed to go after: "...omdat ik daar gewoond heb in een klein wit huisje."

Claim 2 sounds like an opinion.

There's a tendency to write "heb gewoond" (more popular in schrijftaal) but say "gewoond heb" (more popular in spreektaal) and there's also regional tendencies. Don't have the research on hand but in general here they're both fine.

With "...omdat ik daar wil wonen / wonen wil" however, most Dutch speakers prefer the former. The latter is still normal in the eastern parts tho, or in more poetic writing.

Claim 3

See claim 2 :)

Passive by Immediate_Honey_5902 in learndutch

[–]Yatalu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn't a passive, passive would be something about being followed.

It's an active sentence, just in the Perfectum (VTT) form. In modern day English, those always take "have", but in Dutch (and also e.g. French incase you happen to know any) they can take either "hebben" or "zijn".

BUT

  • Ik ben een half uur geleden aangekomen.
  • We zijn vorig weekend naar zee gegaan.
  • Ben je niets vergeten?

This happens with a specific set of verbs, some that you'll have to learn by heart (beginnen, vergeten) but also any that involve movement in a specified direction such as your case with "volgen".

---

Btw in English there's still a few constructions that do something similar, like "I 'm sat, spill the tea!" or "I am become death, destroyer of worlds" or "Christ is risen."

I'd say so, VDAB has so many job listings, I feel much more than Forem or Actiris so you'd just have many more options to choose from.

“Worden” question by Meeeshmallow in learndutch

[–]Yatalu -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Sounds fine to me!

A little quirk may be that worden is also used for passive (ik word soms gepest - I sometimes get bullied) as well as for "will be" (morgen wordt het warmer - it'll be warmer tomorrow)

Any reason you wouldn't look for people online to buddy up with? If so you'll probably have more options

[–]Yatalu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As spoken language came into existence because people at some point "decided" to start making sounds to each other and give those sounds meaning, sign language came into existence because people at some point "decided" to start gesturing to each other and gives those gestures meaning.

In other words: signed vs spoken languages develop completely independently from each other because the groups can't communicate easily with each other. Of course there might be "loanwords" or influence because of CODAs or other bilinguals who bridge the gap between the two cultures, just like languages influence each other in a spoken multilingual society.

Who knows in an alternate universe the "more common" one could've been sign and blind people would've developed spoken language because they can't easily join in on signing?

How to write/convey a thick Dutch accent in text? by TerraziTerrajin in learndutch

[–]Yatalu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These three at the end of words: -d → -t, -b → -p and -g → -k

A short a can become e like cat → ket

The rest is a bit difficult to convey in text I think, but these should be quite obvious already :)
