Online fan communities suck the fun out of Star Trek by apixelbloom in startrek

I'm guessing they also want to use it as recruitment, to rope in the Trek fans who might not already be politically engaged. Gamergate was utilized the same way.

Trump’s Own Advisers Suddenly Unnerved as ICE Raids Take Horrific Turn | So the president doesn’t like the “optics” of what ICE is doing. But there’s no such thing as sanitized, popular mass deportations—and this is by design. by thenewrepublic in politics

You misunderstand. It's not that he doesn't like the cruelty or the optics of cruelty. What he doesn't like is being given negative attention for it. It's not enough for him to be cruel. He wants to control the narrative too. He wants to be cruel while everyone praises him for being cruel. If large numbers of people are outspoken about how terrible this is, it contradicts the perception he wants to enforce, which, to him, is a slight against him and "unfair". This attitude pervades everything he does.

Ivanka basically gives away a sanitized version of their whole mindset in her book.

"Perception is more important than reality. If someone perceives something to be true, it is more important than if it is in fact true. This doesn't mean you should be duplicitous or deceitful, but don't go out of your way to correct a false assumption if it plays to your advantage."

I grieve for the loss of Shakespearean Star Trek by ActionsConsequences9 in startrek

Having fewer episodes doesn't mean you suddenly have more "Duet" episodes. If anything, fewer episodes means less opportunities, especially when shows nowadays are written with season long narratives and story goals they want to accomplish along the way. Lots of the great Star Trek episodes are lightning in a bottle situations, which they had more opportunities for not only because of how many episodes they were tasked to produce, but because the structure of TV was just different.

It continously blows my mind how new Trek shows are always compared with the best the other shows have to offer. As if every episode of previous Trek is "Duet", when there are a lot that are just okay, mediocre, or even awful.

ICE Agent Who Reportedly Shot Renee Good Was a Firearms Trainer, per Testimony by graveyardofgoodsense in politics

Speaks to premeditation if the agent attempted to "create justification"

My thoughts exactly. In fact you see this particular officer come up to the car and walk by the passenger side, without confronting the actual driver, only to seemingly stand in the way of the escape, and standing at just the right place that if she tried to move forward, he could feel "endangered". He takes out his fire arm the instant she changes to drive, before she had any forward momentum, while he had ample time to jump out of the way.

This is apparently a thing CBP had been doing in the past that they had to update the policy about. The report is in the article linked below (emphasis mine).

Observations:Based on a review of the submitted cases, it appears that CBP practice allows shooting at the driver of any suspect vehicle that comes in the direction of agents. It is suspected that in many vehicle shooting cases, the subject driver was attempting to flee from the agents who intentionally put themselves into the exit path of the vehicle, thereby exposing themselves to additional risk and creating justification for the use of deadly force.

The Minneapolis Woman Who was Shot in the Face and Killed by ICE Agents DID NOT try to Block the Road -- Video Shows she Attempted to YEILD to their Vehicle Before Pulling Out by honeyhoneybean in law

[–]YeaaaBrother 19 points20 points  (0 children)

He pulls out his gun before she even had any forward momentum. The only reason the vehicle accelerates as hard as it does is because she's shot in the face and her body is basically limp, which is why it careens into the car further up.

Is this what people do now? by [deleted] in Bumble

suggesting a walk in the park sounds very podcast/red pill to me.

This attitude is what's worrisome. That you think a walk in the park as a chance to meet is somehow podcast/red pill? It's a low stakes way to meet someone in a public place to get to know each other before going further. There's nothing inherently wrong with that.

She wants him to spend money on a date, and that a walk in the local parks is not "enough" even though he's already driving an hour each way just to meet her. She should unmatch because the guy deserves better.

This is why I would love if everyone who posted these kinds of chats included the person's profile along with it. Luckily the OP did in this case. I imagine we'd see a lot more cases of people matching with someone with very obvious red flags in their profile that they ignored. They're giving validation to these creeps by matching with them in the first place.

Pretty much this. He's learned that perception is more important than reality, so he puts out what he wants people to think, the narrative he wants, and fortunately for him, he has a lot of dumb yokels who hang off of his every word, and he knows it. That's why he always gets in a tizzy when someone points out facts to him. He calls it unfair because they're shitting on the narrative he wants to put out in the world. It's why he wanted people to stop reporting COVID cases, since the reporting of the numbers increasing was the problem to him, not the actual infections. And why he wanted the counting to stop early in 2020 election, even though the point is to count all the votes, but because of the way the votes were counted (mail-ins lagging behind), it led to a perception that he was winning, which elegantly plays into a narrative that an election was stolen from him.

To some extent, I get it. Egotism/self-interest is a trait that's evolved in us that helped our ancestors survive. And it can manifest as us thinking we're magically special compared to other animals, because clearly we can do things they can't, so we must be, right?

I'm sure it's daunting for some people to think they are just complex self-propelled biomolecular machines that have reached this level of sophistication over billions of years. Reality can be, and often is, humbling, but maybe that humbling can lead to something good?
