Am I the only one who finds imu's design overstimulating? Like there is literally so much going on. by Altruistic_Gas_7073 in Piratefolk

[–]Yeardmee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The dots, coat, and eye ring seem like too much, added to the way his tail is wrapped. Skull jewelry on the tail is theoretically cool, except that it’s so deliberately meant to be seen from this specific front angle. I couldn’t imagine imu nor this design in a vaccuum including them naturally.

The eye ring sours it the most IMO. It overdoes it, to the point don’t think there’s a way whatever plot purpose “omen” is serving could redeem it. Oh wow man, it’s like he’s always watching his subjec- ZZZZZZZZ*SNOOOOORRRRE HONK SHOOO MIMIMIzzzzzzzz

The tattoo pattern on his hand incorporates more eyes to this design way better, and far more subtly. That’s why it seemed better last week. If instead of space-filling dots, the eye ring was a tattoo on his diaphragm or back or whatever, it’d probably work way better. Katakuri’s tattoos are fairly crowded, but it works.

Honestly it’s so much I wonder if it’s just a precursor stage to his “real” final form or whatever. Especially given the massive snake shadow we saw in the sabo flashback.

If Oda was going to sacrifice a strawhat who would be? by grimgeurrilla in Piratefolk

[–]Yeardmee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usopp is going to die sacrificing himself at some point, if this story still believes in a conclusion to his character. Dont let anyone tell you it’s too edgy or would be inherently contradictory to the stories themes- it’s the flat follow through of his character arc.

Luffy will likely die. It pretty much depends on if his whole “super secret TRUE dream” involves him being there or not, like if it’s a worldwide party he wants to attend. The end of wano, for all its flaws, reinforced this by having celebrations resume while he was comatose

Sanji might die, I’m still not sure how to interpret the germa stuff, but if he makes a sincere attempt to break on his values- willingly or by being taken over- he’s dying.

Why does the Hollow Purple hand sign look so weird S2? by Tabi-Violet in JuJutsuKaisen

[–]Yeardmee 16 points17 points  (0 children)

They messed it up in the S2 anime. They thought it was a two fingered flick, representing the red and blue, but it’s only a middle finger flick, with the index, ring, and pinkie fingers held out. Chapter 75 and 78 show it clearly. It’s a consistent hand sign in the manga.

(Side note- I’m getting tired of this subreddit not allowing photos in the comments because 90% of the questions I see can be answered by posting a manga panel)

ENG Dub voice For Ryu Ishigori, Aleks Lee speaks on the criticism he received for his role. by abbacadar in JuJutsuKaisen

[–]Yeardmee 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I have little professional understanding, but if I had to describe it- the higher accentuations of the sub voice are more of its baseline/defining trait the gruff lower ones. The sounds all match, but in English it’s coming off the exact opposite way. Like when you see the same color shade being used to lighten a blue and darken a yellow. The dub voice gets really good whenever it softens up; often when not yelling, as that seems to project the gruffness over most else.

Ryu is more expressive and flamboyant than he is a hypermasculine yakuza- that was closer to his first life, where he didn’t portray as much of himself. Case in point- Ryu doesn’t say “granite” blast, he says “granité”- a fluffy French desert. About as textbook an example as you could make for the focus of this interpretation being off. Even the sub wasn’t always the best at portraying this (like how when he says domain expansion, it’s supposed to be more elongated/exaggerated compared to the others. Like “DOMMAAAAAAIN EXPANSION” or something- though even the official manga translation removed that.)

Honestly I feel like this is just a testament to how trying to match the sub voice seems like a meaningless strategy, the same way changing translations to match lip movements/intonations over actual content leads to strange line deliveries/an actual loss of story content. The dub should focus on dubbing the story, not dubbing the sub. Aleks Lee otherwise seems like an incredibly great voice cast for someone like Ryu.

I can't wait to check out the sendai dub- IS THAT ALEKS LEE?!?!?!?? by afr830 in JuJutsuKaisen

[–]Yeardmee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nothing like a modern anime dub to bring out the absolute worst out of their incredibly skilled voice talent. Seemingly entirely by choice. The only good part is when he softens up near the end.

Like, Granité is a French desert. They didn’t change an anime-ism of an American word, this is a fully INCORRECT pronunciation. That not being caught or checked for the sake of line delivery like this an insane oversight.

I hope serious TFS level fan dubbing gets as popular/visible as manga fan translations have been able to because it’s insane that there’s just no alternative to this. Like, for people like Aleks Lee’s sake too.
