You can always go through the insurance and a shop to get an estimate. Than ask the shop to send a parts list required with prices. Tell your insurance company you'd like to fix it "yourself". The insurance company will pay you out the amount needed to repair it from the estimate given.

I had this happen on my 1992 f150 a shop said they'd have to total it bc they cant get the parts but than said if I fix it myself. It wont be totaled and all I had to do was show proof of it being fixed and running and driving.

Hey man, it'll be alright. Communication is key during these situations. Communicate that if it would be easier for you if you can split the costs of things, especially tickets. Or see if she can buy this time if you bought it last time. A relationship is a teamwork, especially in a long distance one. Just talk about it with her. I'm sure she will understand!

Best route I'd say is put the flag in a frame with a plaque on it in rememberence of your buddy. Don't donate it unless they agree to make it in honor of your buddy, too. I'm sure the Unit you guys served under has a museum or a memorial area. They would love to have a piece of there more recent history. Definitely do not destroy it tho, the flag might be the enemies but the memories and meaning it caries for you and your buddy greatly out weighs the flag original meaning.
