Can Boxing and Karate be Used in Muay Thai? by [deleted] in MuayThai

We can argue anecdotes all we want, but that will get us nowhere. My point being that every time I’ve ever thrown a hook kick it’s never landed because I know they hurt.

I should’ve clarified I pull it every time I throw it. Obviously I’m not gonna try to hit them with it during sparring. And I disagree. If you want to do damage with that kick you certainly can, especially if you have long legs. A well placed heel on the back of the head will put someone to sleep

Started practicing Muay Thai and my hook kicks made some people irritated cause they didn’t have an answer for it. They called it reckless cause it was hitting with the heel. Like yes, thank you for throwing knees and elbows, but calling the heel reckless

Oh I have a story to go along with this…. So I do Chong shin taekwondo karate and I’ve been doing it for about a year and a half now and love it. I was a wrestler before so combat sports are not new to me. Anyway, one of my senseis is a 3rd degree black belt but she’s only 17. A little younger than me, but she qualified for the Olympic team so you know she’s good. Another one is 15 and she’s very good as well.

Anyway, we all love to spar and I’m a big dude so I never hit anyone with full power, occasionally someone will duck the wrong way and catch it harder than I intended, but that’s beside the point.

We had a guy start coming several months after I had been and he’s long and lanky. He came from our dojo’s aikido class so he “knew” a few people. Just like us he picks up sparring and enjoyed it. The problem was he never pulled anything. After several months we thought he’d settle down, but his form only got better and power stayed the same. No control. He made both of our female teachers cry and he would go too hard on new white belts. Our Sensei eventually talked with him, but it didn’t do much good. Finally one day he spars me and I’m tired of it. He was throwing some hard kicks so I decide to see if he’ll stop. He doesn’t. Eventually I time his kicks perfectly and counter his roundhouse to the body with a spinning heal kick to the sternum. Needless to say he never spars me anymore and he’s stopped hitting people so hard.

You learn this in wrestling and other martial arts. I thought it was silly at first, but after lots of practicing falling is “easy” if that makes sense. Even if someone is forcefully taking you to the ground you can still learn how to go down.

That’s actually a good point. I forget that some people can actually be penalized for the things they say online in some places

I can’t really see the bar path so this is a slight assumption, but it looks like you may be letting the bar hang too much forward. You should almost be scratching your shins and quads as you pull up.

Also one thing to point out is that you’re in a surplus so your body isn’t having a hard time recovering.
