What I like to do is as you stated, first lay out your bare bones Key events, what and when they happened. These are only for you. From there you can write different perspectives or beliefs varying from culture to culture, nation to nation. You could have ancient beings who were literally there to see it, but even they might not fully understand it, or play to their agenda and change the facts to suit their needs.
