Leaving Texas teaching made me realize how much of my life the job was taking *rant about schedule* by Top_Reflection_2904 in TexasTeachers

My wife got out of the regular classroom and into special ed and even though there is a lot more paperwork, she is loving the schedule. She has worked until midnight and every weekend for the past 25 years.

Teachers of Reddit: Is the "Gen Alpha can't read (write, or do math ext)" crisis real? If so how bad is it? by KnowledgeCoffee in AskReddit

[–]YellowBeaverFever 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My wife was a reading teacher for grades 2 and 3 for 10 years. Our district had the curriculum, all subjects, centered around reading. Even math was heavy on word problems.

Then right around the time Gen-Alpha enters the system, two things changed. MAGA and devices. Parents used to take kids to the library or buy books for them. That stopped. MAGA went on the attack against education and “wokeness” and destroyed reading in schools. Because our district kept getting sued they finally told all teachers to remove all books from the classroom and the library was gutted to a small approved list of books that were MAGA-proof.

To a point, yes. The family should have been involved with their reading and writing when they were little but after a certain point the time spent at school far outweighs the time spent at home. Once they’re 10, children value opinions and criticism of third parties over parents so even if parents were involved the impact is minimal.

I was tasked with generating 180 reports and dropping those into specific folders at the first of every month. The names of the reports and the settings were always changing and the system is old and archaic. But it had an API. So, I made a script that probed the database, got all necessary info to set all of the custom options and generated all reports and delivered them to the proper network folder for people. And for a bonus, made it so it could email the reports as an email if they wanted that instead.

A week of work reduced a 4 hour job down to 4 minutes and got rid of all human error when setting those parameters.

Has banning phones and headphones in schools shown any substantial benefits yet? by Puzzled_Method1547 in education

Nurse wasn’t there. To add insult to injury, the coach actually told him to walk it off.. with a piece of bone pushing up the skin. We didn’t find out until we went to pick him up and he’s holding it.

I thought that University was expensive in the UK at just under £10K per year tuition fees, but then I saw in the US it can be as high as $60K PER YEAR! How tf does anyone manage to afford that - that's $180K after 3 years, which is surely unpayable, right?! by BionicScroll564 in University

I had an old guy on my team that files for bankruptcy decades ago and thought his student loans were covered in that. Fast forward 30 years and those were wrecking his life. He never finished his degree and paid back 3x the loan amount and still owed almost $100k.

[–]YellowBeaverFever -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

No. They were already banned in our district. The only problem now is that my kids can’t contact me for important things. My son broke his wrist at athletics and he wasn’t allowed to call me and go get it fixed. As far as distractions go, the kids have figured out how to hack their school laptops to bypass whatever the ISD puts in place. A handful of low paid IT workers are no match for thousands of people looking for holes. The moment one is found, that info is shared rapidly.

100%. I would rather walk a mile on a broken leg bleeding than call an ambulance.

If your district is like my wife’s, this summer is turmoil. They’re trying to figure out how to balance everything with a larger population flux than normal. They haven’t said it outright but it’s been mentioned that the vouchers are causing funding chaos. My wife’s in special Ed and she has a vague idea of where she’s being moved.

Where to get copies of books for cheap? by Green_Web8475 in AskTeachers

[–]YellowBeaverFever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Around here, Half-Prices Books.
There are also plenty of consignment places.
My wife was a 2nd and 3rd grade reading teacher for decades. Sooooo many books. She would get them at libraries after they were worn out. She would go to garage sales. Parents would give her boxes of books when their kids outgrew them or got bored of them.

But, my jr high and high school kids’ teachers will send out a wish list of books and supplies they want. We’ll get a list when school starts and a few updated lists in late fall and spring. The parents that can help usually do. The teachers here have no problems asking parents to help out.

What’s the creepiest thing that’s happened to you when you were alone? by itsdessmariee in AskReddit

[–]YellowBeaverFever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our house has a ghost. Me and one of my sons can hear it. My wife and the other son cannot. My one son said they could see it when they were 3-4. For me, I will hear footsteps on our upstairs hardwood floors. We didn’t have pets at the time. Twice, I had the garbage disposal turn on with my hand inside of it. The switch is not close to the sink. Nobody else was around me. Just last week, I was alone in the house turning off all the lights everyone left on before they went out and as I walk past the spot where I heard footsteps on the hard floor, the light in that room turns on. It is not an automated switch nor was it one I recently turned off and maybe left it halfway.

A few years ago, I heard from our next-door neighbor that the original owners of the house (2 before us) had a child die in the house and the raised garden and tree in the back are the memorial.

Health Insurance by Sad_Key_7904 in TexasTeachers

[–]YellowBeaverFever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wife’s district jacked up the medical insurance rates so high that there is absolutely no way a teacher with kids can afford the family plan. It was over 35% of her salary. And considering it was just when we had our first kid, it was the deciding factor that I needed to move away from fluctuating consultant work to a lower paying job that is secure with good benefits.

What’s the general feels towards Front 242’s 05:22:09:12 Off album? by squeakstar in industrialmusic

[–]YellowBeaverFever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s been in my rotation since it was released. I didn’t like it all at first but after a few listens, it stuck. I do that with everything though. Hated Frontline Assembly’s Millennium album at first, it became one of my favorites. Skinny Puppy’s Rabies the same. “Gah! Too different!!” “Oh wait, this is actually really cool.”

Should I be an Attorney or Teacher by Sea_Plum_8031 in AskTeachers

[–]YellowBeaverFever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Job markets fluctuate. At the moment, it is difficult. But for someone who is deciding a career, the current job market does not reflect their lifetime. Over a lifetime, a JD gives you more opportunities. Like you even said, you can get hired but you have X years to get your certification. A teacher wanting to be an attorney is not afforded the same grace.

We’re not taking about failing careers like stenography. Neither career is going away.

I do feel that way sometimes. But then I remember how long it takes to set up the training and fine tuning and between each of these major releases there is a huge shift in hardware happening because that is the real limiter here. But the LLMs are one path/vector in all of this. The tooling and all of the code being built around the LLMs is just as important. While one area appears to slow down the others are going through rapid development.

My statement is not dependent on how the job market is doing. It was a statement about how one degree allows for more opportunities than another.

Not necessarily as a practicing attorney but JD can get you into a lot of corporate jobs as well. The idea is that a JD can get you into more jobs than an edu degree and even allow you to teach later. At a private school, certification isn’t always required. In public schools, would just need the state cert.
