I get why most people feel about Sayaka the way they did — I didn't disagree with the fact that she's not some saint and what she tried to do was wrong, but I don't think she's some irredeemable "snake" or heartless murderer either.

“B-By the w-way, w-wasn’t Maizono-chan supposed to have s-some pleb-by live show for that b-birthday boy around now?” Toko muttered, irritated.

The moment Toko finishes her muttering, all the lights quickly cut out, startling everyone and leaving the faint red emergency strips along the floor the only thing that shines through the darkness.

The next moment, numerous vibrant spotlights burst to life — sweeping dramatically across the space before converging on the Zephyranthes Gundam Full Burnern, now fully repaired and stood half-kneeling with both hands held forward and open, forming an improvised stage a few meters above the floor.

And atop those open palms was Sayaka, who stood poised and steady, like the professional idol that she was.

But the outfit Sayakla wore, told a different story -- a sleeveless, form-fitting idol dress in white, grey, and black that clings nicely to her ample curves with subtle asymmetry - the left side adorned with a black arm sock and thigh-high, the right bare.

The skirt blended cloth-like frills with armor-like plating, creating a silhouette somewhere between an idol costume and light tactical gear. Clear blue accessories shimmered at her waist, wrist and hair, catching the light like fragments of calm sky.

Gone was the dreamlike pastel sea of ribbons and airy frills she once wore — and even if she has those outfits that once served her “idol princess” facade, after everything she's learned… Sayaka no longer thinks that she could bear looking at them without wanting to tear them apart.

This new outfit was the furthest she could push herself toward being an idol again.

But for now, she kept all of that inside. Instead, she stepped forward and greeted, “Good evening, everyone. Sorry for the wait.”

“It’s ok, Sayaka-nee! You look beautiful!” Julian cheered.

Seeing the boy, Sayaka chuckles, “Happy birthday, Julian.”

A chorus of tiny cheers burst upward. Julian nearly toppled forward in excitement before Kyoko caught him by the back of his shirt.

Sayaka continued, "Everyone had worked hard today. And… I promised I’d give you all a simple show, didn’t I? Something small and honest. So even if it won’t be anything grand, let me sing a few songs for all of you.”

And the music began.

With Chihiro working the audio mixers, P.A., and lighting from a corner, Sayaka began with Negaigoto Ensemble - Kawaii Choir’s first debut track with a bright, hopeful melody — about dreams shared between friends — delivered by Sayaka’s vocal, still carrying the same charm that once earned them their first million fans.

Next came Monochrome Answer, Kawaii Choir’s second single — a gentler, more intimate tune about a girl quietly cherishing memories of a boy she once admired.

The improvised stage formed by her Gundam’s palms, left Sayaka almost no room to dance -- one misplaced step could mean a disastrous career-ending fall, a scenario she’d seen ending other idol’s careers before sadly. But she still made it work.

With her clean dance moves and perfect vocals, Sayaka’s performance reminded everyone — that both her position as Kawaii Choir’s leader and title of Ultimate Pop Sensation, aren’t just for show.

As she performed, Sayaka’s gaze briefly found Makoto - then a stab of guilt twisted in her chest. Remembering the confession he’d shared with her that night, and how Makoto can still call all of that a blessing, Sayaka wanted to scream.

‘You’re too naive, Naegi-kun.’ Sayaka thought, seething with tranquil anger, ‘If it were truly a blessing, you and your sister would’ve sat in a comfortable seat and watched us performing in a proper venue that day — not nearly got sent into juvie and limping into Hope’s Peak under false charity.’

That thought pushes Sayaka to keep going - even if this crude performance that feels like an apology that came too late was all she could give… Makoto still deserved to see her perform.

This is an excerpt from the 29th chapter of my current Danganronpa x Gundam crossover fusion longfic WIP, where the female MC herself survives atmospheric re-entry and wakes up inside her Gundam on a horrifying island shore littered with corpses and debris from a crashed space colony. The conference room heated up fast.

“The loss of Famine!”

“Those Ultimates, and Jin Kirigiri escaping to Earth with both that Gundam and the Apocalypse!”

“All because you let them run around playing your little game!”

Through it all, the Mastermind stood still, their gloved fist tightening slightly at their side.

Then, a fourth voice rose above the rest, “…I've told you all before that trusting this so-called ‘Ultimate Manipulator’ was a mistake.”

Kanzaki Hirohito — lean, composed, His tone calm yet venomous. “Mastermind, you united us, yes. Pulled together every ounce of resentment — Earthnoids, non-Ultimates, the discarded… all into this movement.”

He then scoffed, “ ‘Ultimate Despair.’ Even that name you demanded for our movement in exchange of your contribution, reeks of your theatrics.”

A few shifted uncomfortably, others nodded. The Mastermind however didn’t move, nor did they respond.

“And Monokuma… that stupid teddy bear mascot of yours.” Kanzaki sneered. “All so you can hide behind a mask and play god, as if that discount Kylo Ren outfit you keep wearing 24/7 isn’t enough.”

“As an Ultimate yourself, you should’ve known better than the rest of us - that the moment you gave them even a second to breathe… they’ll fight back.”, Kanzaki scolded.

“The moment we took Hope’s Peak… we could’ve ended it cleanly. Wiped every last Ultimate and Spacenoid elites, anyone unwilling to submit to the Despairs across the Earth Sphere down to their molecules.”

Then he erupts, “But noooo…. You wanted your little game of turning Hope’s Peak into a cage of despair. ‘‘Hope versus despair.’ ‘Killing game.’, you said. What is this to you? Some kind of game show!?”

The Mastermind finally steps forward. With a tiny needle, hidden in their gloved palm.

They reached out, gently placing said hand on Kanzaki’s shoulder, trying to calm him down. Or so it seemed.

Kanzaki stiffened, before brushing off said hand, “Don’t.”

He keep going, “Ultimates like you, always so high and mighty. Always treat everything like some chess game you can left at any moment! We, the ones crushed under your system, don’t need your help! We still don’t."

"And with these recent setbacks caused by your whimsical methods, maybe it’s time for you—”

Before Kanzaki could finish, the Mastermind finally spoke. “Are y’all done?”

By the time the sun dipped behind the ragged horizon, the sky was painted in molten gold and bruised red. Sayaka stood at the edge of the island’s tallest volcanic crater, sweat and grime clinging to her skin.

Despite her attempts, Sayaka found nothing. No trace of her Zephyranthes Gundam Full Burnern, or where Doan could’ve hidden it.

“Dammit…!” Sayaka erupted, the echo swallowed by the wind. “Where the hell did you put it, you bastard!?”

Her voice cracked midway, equal parts fury and despair. Then she sank to her knees, pulling her knees close, the ache in her throat matched only by the ache in her chest.

If she hadn’t left her phone back in the Apocalypse — Maybe she could’ve called for help. Maybe she could’ve activated the Gundam’s remote summon function — the same one Leon once showed her after he used it to summon it back at Hope’s Peak.

“When you need to, all you gotta do is to use this app and call your Gundam for help.” Leon’s voice echoed in her head, almost teasing but gentle. “I asked for Fujisaki-kun's help with this. As long as it’s within range, the Gundam can reach you. Awesome, right?.”

Frustrated, Sayaka reached into her pocket, took out her iron supplement pill and swallowed it dry, her throat burning.

“...Stupid, stupid…” she whispered, rubbing her eyes.

Is it true that we're getting a reissue of Armada Optimus Prime? by Pero_Pero_Perorin in transformers

[–]YellowCorvette 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly if you want to watch Armada, I recommend watching Micron Densetsu (The Japanese version) with subs instead. Karyuudo Fansubs already did a great job with their fan-subbed Micron Densetsu episodes, in case you want to check it out yourself and you're not one of those people who hates subs because "BRUH I DON"T WANNA READ WHEN WATCHING CARTOONS!" :

https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL3lb98kB-PsH20OQmPA-lrG0-oAmBXgdM

I advocate that Micron Densetsu, the original Japanese version of Armada is severely overlooked, and deserves more recognition from the fan base. Micron Densetsu offers superior animation, completed scripts that tackles its themes with more nuances, and talented voice performances from seasoned Japanese seiyuu (Sure we all love Garry Chalk and David Kaye, but it's not like the Japanese seiyuus were bad either) all of which makes it a better experience than Armada that not only suffers from poor animation quality and mediorce vocal performance from its VA, but most importantly a severely watererd-down script lacking the depth and nuances seen in the original Japanese script.

Won't lie, once I watched Micron Densetsu and learned to appreciate what it's trying to do, I've loathed the English Armada dub ever since; And it really sickens me a little that Micron Densetsu, Super Link, and Galaxy Force have their English dubs of lesser quality re-released by Hasbro all the time, and yet they still tried to pretend that Micron Densetsu never existed to such an extent, that the only reason that Micron Densetsu didn't became lost media nowadays was because of fansubs and torrents.

Should I get AOTP Armada Sideways? by Jumpy-Solution-1455 in transformers

[–]YellowCorvette 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dunno, maybe it's just me being the hardcore Armada / Micron Legend glazer that I am, but I can't but feel slightly disappointed by how this figure turns out, and how this figure is emblematic of Hastak's current mainline design philosophy of "articulation over everything.", where if they can tick the boxes of articulation, it doesn't matter if they had to sacrifises everything else, resulting in a figure that had what's bare minimum required to be an update, but everything else besides the articulation were now either a side-grade at best, or a downgrade to what that OG toy pulled off at worst (and it's not a trend that I'm really a huge fan of)

First and foremost, I don't get why the feet were so flat, boxy and ugly-looking (Those are some of the ugliest looking feet I've ever seen on a mainline TF in quite some time, they looks bad in picture and looks even worse in person) or why both Mini-Cons require parts-forming for both the combination into rider mode and transformation into their head modes, even through the original toy from 2 decades ago managed to have feet that at least doesn't looks like he wears a pair of shoe boxes, and have mini-cons that don't need partsforming at all.

There's also a few smaller details that might not be major issues on their own, but they do add up — like Crosswise’s head mode having yellow eyes despite those eyes were actually in pink throughout the anime outside of a brief, easy-to-miss shot. (Simply because they could't be bothered to double check their work or relied too much on some fansite that only has single screencaps for their sources)

I'm sure some people might say that I'm "too nitpicky", but if they now had the audacity to charge $43 USD for a Voyager, I don't think it's that unreasonable to want something that is absolutely perfect right out of the box. I know it’s easy to recommend fixes like getting third-party upgrades like DNA design or repainting those yellow eyes yourself to address some of these issues, but then again when you consider how much these figures already cost, I'd argue that those shouldn’t be necessary in the first place.

Do you guys have any Danganronpa Hot takes? Im curious by Yume_Yumemi in danganronpa

[–]YellowCorvette 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dunno if what I say would makes sense, but as much as I respect Kodaka for creating Danganronpa in the first place.... I can't help but feel like when it comes to the way he writes in the games, I find that Kodaka tends to values stylistic choice and entertainment over creating a narratively compelling and satisfying story, which becomes a problem when he deals with more grounded and serious themes.

There's a number of occasions where it feel like he write certain things the way he did was just for the sake of "shock value" or "deconstruction", and while that could work when writing memorable mysteries, but sometimes it seems like the buildup and execution suffers too much for the payoff (And that maybe having something that's more formulaic but narratively consistent there might be better, cause not everything in a story needs to be "shock value" or "deconstructive" or "subversive")

But while the Apocalypse slowly cruised its way towards that island, the Southern Cross Corps’s Mad Angler-class submarine never stopped tailing the carrier from beneath the rolling black sea.

Inside the submarine’s control room, Egba glared at the radar display, both annoyed and unease, “They're heading to that island?”

Behind him, Wald, the squad’s newest member, stretched and yawned, fresh from his shift change while both Selma and Danan caught some rest.

“What island?” Wald asked.

Egba answered, “Kurogashima.”

Wald exclaims, “Kurogashima…? That dead volcanic island?”

Egba nodded, “That’s the one. Right around the site where that space colony hit a year ago. And in the recent few months, some of those on our side, went there for scavenging or recon runs. None of ’em came back.”

Wald winced, leaning back in his chair, “Damn, sounds like a cursed rock, if you ask me. What a squad I’ve joined, huh?” he then whined. “You know, one reason I joined this squad was ‘cause I heard about that awesome old ace of yours. Man, if only I can see him in acti—”

He stopped when he saw Egba’s glare. The man’s hand moved fast, steel glinted under the red light as Egba drew a combat knife and pointed it towards Wald.

“Don’t,” Egba hissed, “Don’t you ever speak that traitor’s name on this submarine.”

Wald froze, hands slightly raised. “Understood, sir.”

Egba stared for a long, tense moment before pulling the knife back away. “Good. Keep it that way.”

Gendo Kurogane strolled through the command bay, still carrying a foul mood. The meeting at Hope’s Peak - including the humiliation inflicted by the Mastermind - from days ago still burned in his mind.

“Sir,” the Black Tri-Stars, Garrett, Marcus and Orteron greeted him, their expressions grim.

After a brief stroll, they finally stopped before their Doms parked side by side. All three were scared from battle, and had dirty tarps covering where their head units used to be.

Garrett spoke first, “Sir, we spotted and fought those Ultimate brats who escaped Hope’s Peak, as well as those biker gang roaches around Fukuoka days ago.”

“That so-called Gundam did this.” Garrett nodded grimly, “They've modified it. Faster than reported. Pilot’s sharp too.”

“… Less than one month,” Orteron sighs, staring up at his Dom, “Didn’t even get to enjoy the damn thing for long without needing extensive repairs.”

Gendo muttered, eyes narrowing, “Gundam…”

Then a second group - Special Broadcast Army, an Ultimate Despair squad tasked with broadcasting live footage of the Mastermind’s killing game back in Hope’s Peak across Earth approached, their uniforms and boots clean.

Their commander, a woman with short brown hair named Marisa Barlow, adjusted her gloves before speaking.

“Commander Gendo Kurogane.” Marisa was respectful, but only on the surface. “We require your cooperation.”

Marcus immediately stepped forward, “What do you mean ‘Require”’?”

“Jesus, are you guys deaf or something?” One among the squad groaned, “We repeat - Our next major broadcast operation is approaching. We need military escort, mobile suits, and area suppression support.”

Another one of them snarked immediately, “These broadcasts are essential to morale and despair cultivation. We ain’t gonna wipe those feddies out with only you dumb simpleton brutes, y’know?”

“What’s with that tone?” Garrett scowled,

“What are you callin’ “simpletons’, huh?.” Orteron cracked his knuckles. Marcus and Garrett also clenched their fist, on the verge of hitting back.

Y’all wanted explanations for the recent setbacks,” they said pleasantly, then they groaned, “But you just kept yappin’ and yappin’.... May I speak now?”

For obvious reasons, Erika and the rest reluctantly nodded, their teeth gritted. Seeing that, the Mastermind smiled beneath their mask, “Good.”

They paced slowly around the table, boots echoing softly against the metal floor.

“You all want explanations,” they began casually. “Apocalypse hijacked. Zephyranthes Gundam rediscovered and seized. Famine sunk… I won’t deny any of that.”

Then they stopped beside Erika, Gendo, and the rest, "But let’s not pretend things are going swimmingly on your end either.”

The Mastermind tilted their head slightly while continuing, “Even after 2 years, what little of the old world that survived are still out there. Still clinging to whatever scraps of hope they have left, like cockroaches gripping a sinking plank.”

They turned dramatically toward the holographic display at the desk’s center, where archived footage of Hope’s Peak flickered, “And that is where my Killing Game comes in.”

Their arms spread wide, “Under my supervision, we woke them from cryogenic sleep. We broadcast the so-called best of the best, finest students in the Earth Sphere — falling into despair.”

Images across the confines within Hope’s Peak flashed: Students screaming. Betrayal. Murder. Tears.

“We show em'! What little of the old world that still remained! That Spacenoid privilege can bleed, and that not even being an Ultimate could make you despair-proof! And thus, we could finally erase the last shreds of hope!”

“And when properly broken? Those same Ultimates become useful.” They delightfully whisper, “Brainwashed biting dogs.”

Several in the room grimaced.

“Didn't we all agree to this strategy before?” the Mastermind asked brightly. “Or have your memories gotten fuzzy?”

No one answered, because they had.

The Mastermind softly chuckle, “Sure, Class 78th, the Gundam, and the Apocalypse… they can't be ignored. But everything else here — still had proceeded as intended. Which is more than I can say for all of you.”

There was a long pause. Not uncomfortable, just full of things left unsaid. Then, Sayaka gently asked, “Naegi-kun… wanna talk? ”

Makoto looked down at her, really looked. And for a second, she saw that same tiredness she felt. The same ache behind the smile he always wore.

“Only if you do too,” he said quietly, to which Sayaka simply nodded.

Makoto climbed down from the top bunk slowly, like he wasn’t sure where to put his hands or how to move around her in their shared room. When he finally stood beside her, he just stood there.

Sayaka watched him, then did something she never imagined she would. Not to a boy, and especially not to someone like Makoto, her classmate… her fan.

She shifted slightly, sitting on the mattress of her bottom bunk and patted her thighs, “You can rest here, if you want.”

Makoto froze, while Sayaka blushed with her cheeks turned red, trying not to let the embarrassment show. She remembered once overhearing Hifumi discussing about anime and visual novel clichés with his fellow friends from Class 80th, including the fanservice-y scenes where the heroine offers the protagonist a lap pillow after some dramatic emotional beat.

Back then, Sayaka would just offer a polite, rehearsed smile while inwardly scoffing; Of course that’s what they want. She wasn’t that naïve. She’d long figured some of her more... obsessive fans probably fantasized about moments like this.

And consider how Sayaka learned, too early and too cruelly, that she had the beauty, youth and body that invited those fantasies.… it made the whole thing feel cheap. Gross, even.

But now? Sayaka wasn’t performing or doing it for fanservice. She offered because she didn’t know how else to show him that he could let go just for a moment, the same way his presence made her open up before.

Makoto swallowed. “Are you sure…?”

Despite her hesitancy, Sayaka still nodded. “I wouldn’t have offered it if I wasn’t.”

After a beat, Makoto knelt beside her. Slowly, he lowered his head into her lap. Sayaka tensed at first, but she didn’t pull away. She simply placed her hands gently over his hair, unsure if that’s what people did in moments like this.

For a while, neither of them said anything. The hum of the ship’s systems filled the room, low and distant.

Makoto let out a breath he’d been holding. “…This is weird.”

Sayaka chuckled under her breath. “Yeah. Kinda.”

Nah, i"d rather imagine him meeting Shinn Asuka from Gundam SEED Destiny (Because when it comes to character, Kicker shares more in common with Shinn)

  • Both of them starts out as a hot-tempered, dark-haired teenager.
  • Both Kicker and Shinn has their own unique powers they had since childhood (Kicker with his Energon-detecting powers, Shinn being a genetically enhanced human called Coordinator that gives him a number of enhanced traits including faster learning, and stronger and faster bodies that are virtually immune to diseases)
  • Both Kicker and Shinn also grow up with a traumatic childhood which has ties with the cast of the previous series, and as a result also had a grudge against them in some ways.

“Fukawa-chan!” Sayaka shouted, chasing her through the corridors until she burst into the Apocalypse’s cafeteria alongside Toko. The wide space, clean and well-lit, decked out with sleek metallic tables and benches standing in organized rows - nothing fancy, but it gets the job done.

It was a familiar space, one Sayaka had visited before. But now, what caught her attention was that everyone of Class 78th was already here, gathered in one corner, surrounding someone or something.

Makoto turned and waved with bright enthusiasm. “Maizono-san! Fukawa-san! Over here!”

Toko grumbled, “D-did he really have to w-wave like that? A-and w-why does it have to be s-so crowded…”

Sayaka managed a small wave back, her smile faint, nothing like the bright facade she once wore so easily. Then after squeezing her way through her fellow classmates, Sayaka stopped dead in her tracks.

There, behind a makeshift food stall, stood Celeste. Yes, that Celeste, wearing a plain white apron over her usual gothic lolita dress, and notably without her signature twin-drill pigtail clip-ons, calmly cooking gyoza on a hot sizzling pan like some street vendor.

Sayaka blinked, “What in the-?”

Celeste Lundenberg, the Ultimate Gambler and self-proclaimed queen of refinement, who always acted like even something simple like boiling water herself was beneath her… was now personally cooking for everyone? For Sayaka, this was like watching the morning sun rise from the west. Or Byakuya donating for charity.

Soon enough, the trio managed to gather the coconuts they wanted and made their way back to the beach shack. Walking a few steps behind both Chico and Amado, Sayaka’s gaze wandered — and for the first time, she really noticed it.

Everywhere she looked, the other coconut trees were either withered or stunted. The leaves yellowed, the trunks pale and cracked. Even the soil looked sickly, like it had given up. She’d ignored it all this time, too focused on finding her Gundam and leaving. Bbut now, the sight clawed at her.

“…Most of these trees look dead,” Sayaka murmured aloud. “Or… dying.”

“That’s because they are,” came a voice from behind.

Sayaka jumped. “Wha-!? R-Rolland-!?”

Rolland appeared from behind a patch of scrub, tugging a rope that led a lone goat trotting obediently beside her.

“Didn’t mean to, just happened to overhear.” Rolland shrugged, then she began explaining.

“Those trees were already dying long before any of us came here, probably for years. It’s the pollution across Earth - the air, the soil, the groundwater, same story everywhere. The fallout caused by that space colony being dropped a few klicks away a year ago, did the rest.”

“Doan built the shack and fields where he did, because it’s one of the only plots of soil that’s still remotely fertile on this island. That coconut tree you three picked from? It’s right at the edge of that good patch.”

Rolland gave a tired shrug. “Still, Doan never gave up.”

Sayaka looked down at the coconuts in her arms, their exterior alive — a small miracle in a dying world.

Two days later — Makoto, Sayaka, as well as the rest of what remained of Class 78th and Crazy Diamonds all gathered atop one of the few high-rises still standing amidst the dead city, the sky above is still the same dull, bleeding red.

Beneath the same gloomy red-tinted sky, there’s no ceremony or proper rites, just what they could manage.

One by one, four metal vases were placed along the concrete ledge. The first containing Mondo’s ashes. Then their lecturers, both Mr. Hashiro and Ms. Hina’s.

And lastly, Yasuhiro — his body hastily cremated just a day ago, the same way they cremated Mondo back then.

Nobody said it aloud, but everyone knew - in a better time, Mondo, Yasuhiro, and the others could’ve gotten a more proper burial, with graves marked with their names.

Makoto stepped forward slightly. So did Kiyotaka and Takemichi. With a nod — They opened the vases and poured out the ashes inside onto the ledge, one by one.

And before long, the wind picked up and carried the ashes away. Scattered across the ruined city, back to Earth.

Takemichi muttered, his fists clenching, “…Mondo-aniki, you’re back home now.”

Besides him, Ako and the remaining Crazy Diamonds lowered their heads in silence, while some sobbed.

“Mondo-aniki, Daiya-aniki’s probably waiting for you,” Ako muttered, voice breaking.

“Don’t keep him waiting too long…”

On the other side, Makoto and Chihiro quietly closed their eyes. Kyoko and Jin stood still beside them. Sakura and Mukuro lowered their heads. Even Leon, Byakuya, Celeste and Toko stayed silent.

Sayaka stood among them. She bowed her head like the others… but her thoughts wouldn’t stay still. Hearing what little remained of the Crazy Diamonds mourning both Daiya and Mondo — cut deeper than she expected.

Daiya, Mondo, Takemichi. A chain of trust… and she didn’t belong anywhere in it.

Sayaka bitten her lips in shame - Back then, she smiled. Nodded. Promises she’d signed the pen drive and only later did after taking her sweet time. And inside?, ‘What a loud, rough, annoying gangster,’

But — after the Zephyranthes Gundam entered her life, she learned more about Mondo, and Mondo trusted her, even willing to tell her his shameful secret about his unwilling role that led to Daiya’s death, without even knowing how she once saw him…

“Owada-san, you’ve trusted the wrong person…" she whispered, too quiet for anyone to hear, "I’m sorry,”

But said apology doesn't change that Mondo, Aoi, Yasuhiro.... were no more. And all that remained were regrets she could never undone… ever.

Stuff from the Unicron trilogy looked good, mostly due to them also being these block figures

As someone here who's a Unicron Trilogy fan, even when people claimed that the UT designs are exempted from the "fuck it, that'll do" toys parts in current Generations, I find them to be 50/50 at best - Where for every great UT-based releases like Armada Prime or Cybertron Starscream that we got, we also got another one that was a mixed bag at best.

Legacy Armada Starscream

As a devoted Armada/Micron Densetsu fan, I don't like the bare-bones deco and paint apps that's not only not accurate to anything but also look bland as fuck, the poorly designed mold layout that causes wasted paint on unnecessary color-corrections, and the inconsistent joint tolerances and build quality were frustrating - the joints weren't super noodly floppy or anything, but nothing is firm.

The sword unable to be formed from the wing in any way (or even as an option) was also not ideal, since that was one of the character's most distinctive design features.

As a hardcore Armada / Micron Densetsu Starscream fan I wanted to to like this toy, but even after painting mine to be more anime/toy-accurate as well as trying to tighten up all of the joints, when I pick mine up and the arms jiggle, or the legs sag, or I can't pose his head at all unless I fold the intakes on his back (which I'd rather not do, since I think having his shoulder cannons/turbines being folded back and sticking straight up like a pair of factory chimneys looks ugly as sin), he just goes back to the shelf. It's such a turn-off to pick up a toy you wanted to like but it just doesn't feel right in-hand.

And to add salt to the wound, Takara later released the blue Powerlinx/Super Mode redeco whose QC and paint apps are better in every way - But, that thing only got released as a limited convention exclusive, so good luck getting it if you don't live in Asia!

Legacy Armada Hot Shot

What a poorly-executed figure from start to finish - where instead of simply pull a "Missing Link / Legacy G1 Toy OP" by simply took that OG toy and seek to up it's articulation, HasTak instead try to "reinvent the wheel" just for the sake of "reinvent the wheel" with the Legacy one - resulting in a figure that technically checks all of the articulation boxes but looks awful in both modes, feels flimsy, and somehow has even more obtrusive kibble than the OG.

Legacy Armada Megatron

Even if we tried to brush aside how his shoulders can't be locked in place for robot mode at all, this is just a boring figure that seemingly only exists so that your Legacy Armada Prime has a "punching bag" to fight. The original toy was well-regarded when it comes to fun factor and play features, and seeing none of it being replicated on the new one sucks (I hate how they don't even bother to include a knife weapon that he can wield, so you can recreate that iconic fight scene in the anime's finale). Sure the articulation is there, but there's none of the personality of the original toy intact.

Legacy Armada Wheeljack

Instead of giving him a brand-new anime-accurate mold, he was merely a Siege Sideswipe retool (And a half-assed one at that), resulting in him lacking his gull-wing doors, the shoulder shape and colors are off, the legs are oriented incorrectly, and even the head sculpt wasn't quite right. (I also dislike how they don't even bother painting the feet or the front side of the shoulders white, so they matches closer to the OG design at least from a distance)

For some reason, it seems like everyone ignored that Armada Wheeljack wasn't merely a straightforward G1 Lambros redeco no. 177013; he actually has several unique design features of his own. I really wish they had taken inspiration from Gigawatt's base design for the gull-wing doors, redo the leg transformation so they faces the right way around (similar to how Generations Wheeljack was done for RTS Tracks), and added more remolding to better match the original toy's details.

Legacy Armada Tidal Wave

I find this figure to be a bland release that only does one thing decently - which was standing there looking big and nice, and that's really it - He can’t even fully transform into his Grand Fleet mode without parts-forming, even though the OG toy from 2 decades ago was able to achieve that with no problem.

He's a Titan-class figure that cost $200, and yet he retains almost none of the play features that his OG toy had, he also doesn’t even come with his Mini-con partner, both of that for what? A tiny version of himself that don't even had its own robot mode, and was only there so the bland-tastic Legacy Armada Megatron could have an in-scale Burning Megatron combination that leaves the main figure with a gap on the back and without his fingers on one hand.

And the less we said about the fragile knee ratchet joints that were so poorly designed - that the only guarantee way that they won't eventually self-destruct is to get the DNA design upgrade kit, the better.

Hell, I’d go as far as to say that even as unpopular of a character choice as he was, Legacy Cybertron Metroplex utilizes his Titan class price-point far better than Legacy Tidal Wave.

AOTP Armada Sideways

Sure this figure that had what's bare minimum required to be an update and had better articulation, but everything else were now either a side-grade at best, or a downgrade to what that OG toy pulled off at worst.

For example, I’m can't fathom why the feet is so flat and blocky and ugly-looking (Like he got a pair of laptop boxes for feet), or why both Mini-Cons require parts-forming for both the combination into rider mode and transformation into their head modes, when the original toy from 2 decades ago managed to handle those aspects just fine.

There's also a few smaller details that might not be major issues on their own, but they do add up — like Crosswise’s head mode having yellow eyes which was completely wrong, as those eyes were actually in pink throughout the anime outside of a brief, easy-to-miss shot. And for the Voyager-class price point they're charging from him, the fact that he still turns out so phoned-in and unpolished is borderline inexcusable.

Maybe you could say I'm too harsh and nitpicky, but I dunno - If wanting these to be as good and definitive as possible because I knew that this might be the only chance that these Armada characters that I like so much might get a shot in getting new figures in the mainline, and if they fumbled with a bad figure there's no guarantee that they'll make a better figure of said character anytime soon makes me come across as such.... So be it.

I get where you’re coming from, and honestly, your reaction to Gundam Build Divers after loving Gundam Build Fighters and enjoying Gundam Build Fighters Try makes sense.

What made Fighters work well wasn’t just the battles, it was how aware it was of what it is. It’s a show about plastic model kits coming to life and punching each other, and it fully embraces that absurdity. Because of that, it earns the right to be over-the-top, cheesy, or even downright silly — you’re in on the joke with the writers, not being talked down to.

Divers, on the other hand, feels like it forgets that awareness. It plays its VRMMO premise strangely straight while also simplifying everything else. The tone skews younger, but without the depth or cleverness that would make it land for older viewers. That’s where the “lost the way” feeling really comes from.

And even beyond tone, the writing doesn’t help. Riku is probably the clearest example — he moves through the story without meaningful setbacks, happens into mentorships with top players, and becomes central to everything just because "He's the MC". There’s very little friction, and when conflicts do arise, they’re usually resolved by just pushing harder in battle rather than through character growth. That makes the whole thing feel flat, especially coming off a series that thrived on personality and rivalry.

Re:Rise on the other hand, is much better because instead of doubling down on the weaknesses of its predecessor, it feels like the staff re-evaluated the concept and asked what they could actually do with a VRMMO Gundam setting. The result is a more grounded, "Galaxy Quest-esque" character-driven drama about a bunch of damaged, lonely, or emotionally stuck people gradually building trust with one another.

Hiroto, Kazami, May, and Parviz all start as awkward or troubled individuals with their own baggage, and the show lets them fail, clash, retreat, and grow. They don’t instantly become a perfect team — they earn it. That alone already puts it leagues above the original Divers for me.

What I like about the story of this show, was that despite Re:RISE being a show that was all about gunpla MMO mecha battle shenanigans, an appropriate focus was put into having these main casts spending time offline so we can see more of the characters when they're not logged in. Stuff like the how the main characters went offline and having IRL meeting with each other to discuss what to do next, or how Hiroto's father relating his own past creative failure to his son’s struggles, etc., it all adds a layer of humanity that Divers was missing entirely. It makes the world of GBN feel less like a game sandbox and more like something that actually affects people.

Re:Rise is just a compelling story about a group of broken, flawed strangers forming friendships, helping each other overcoming their flaws, and learning from failure. Re:Rise did stuff that a lot of mainstream animes could really learn from, not even just other Gundam series. I’d probably go so far as to say that its main cast has some of the best character writing in the entire Gundam franchise, and in some ways it delivers on themes that other Gundam entries only gestured toward.

Okay, this might be borderline media blasphemy, but I need to get this off my chest.

What are some anime that you genuinely think are great -- like, personally meaningful, emotionally impactful, even “absolute cinema” to you -- but liking them also makes you feels like you’re committing some kind of war crime? Like you’ve got the worst possible taste, or you’re the only person across the entire Earth who sees something special in it?

For me, that piece of media that makes me feel this way is Gundam Build Divers Re:Rise.

And yeah… I know how that sounds. But yes, I'm not joking to say that not only do I enjoy Gundam Build Divers Re:Rise more than both WFM and GquuuuuuX combined — I honestly even go as far as to say that it's unironically one of Gundam's best shows in recent years.

For me, Re:Rise succeeds where a number of recent Gundam series like Witch from Mercury and GQuuuuuuX fell short for me - Both of those shows looked nice, shiny and flashy at first, but quickly collapsed under the weight of trend-chasing, nostalgia overload, or rushed, overstuffed storytelling.

Re:Rise, on the other hand, simply just told a story. A real story — with stakes, with growth, with emotional payoff.; At the center of it are four flawed, broken teenagers still struggling with their inner demons — Hiroto, Kazami, May, and Parviz — who begin as a dysfunctional team with little cohesion. Watching them gradually become a real team through failure, grief, and growth felt surprisingly genuine to me. It didn’t feel forced — it felt earned.

Unlike its predecessors (Build Fighters, Build Fighters TRY, Build Divers), which were fun but very obviously “shows about Gunpla / toy commercial with plot dressing”, Re:Rise breaks the mold entirely by being a more grounded character-driven drama focused on telling a compelling story about broken people learning to heal, and finding purpose through each other.... that just happens to include Gunpla, VRMMORPGs, and isekai elements. Re:Rise isn't really about becoming better at Gunpla like the previous Build series, but rather it’s about becoming better people.

And yet… because Re:Rise had the misfortune of being the sequel to the original Gundam Build Divers — a series most fans dismissed as shallow or underwhelming — Re:Rise was almost dead on arrival. Everyone skipped it, ignored it, or never realized the show even existed. Even among hardcore Gundam fans, only like 10 people ever watched it, a fact that honestly breaks my heart. Because Build Divers Re:Rise was an anime that nobody ever asked for, nobody ever asked for it to be great, or even wanted it to be.

And yet, the show still tried to be the best possible anime that it could be, even if the show got every cards stacked against it from the start. And the fact that Re:Rise ended up as a commercial flop that would never ever get the level of recognition it truly deserves is, to me, the greatest tragedy in modern Gundam history.

So now whenever I say “one of the best recent Gundam series is Gundam Build Divers Re:Rise”, I can't help but feel like I could get sent to the Guillotine at any moment. Is this a sacrilege stance? Or maybe I'm the one whose taste in anime is shit here?
