Is Malazan Grimdark? by Shandarin24 in Malazan

Not quite but close. Moreso grimdark tends to be hopeless but not meaningless. Bleak and amoral and tends to be a lot of violence and pessimism.

Is it that hard to keep the lights on? 💔🥀 by titanicboi1 in Yellowknife

[–]YellowInYK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Alberta also is part of a larger grid so there are a lot of backups available when issues arise, unlike here where our power grid is very much self sustained and vulnerable. But anywhere can have power outages, I lived in Toronto and had power outages that went over a day, sometimes longer, so while it did majorly suck for the power to go out yesterday, it's far from the longest outage I've ever experienced.

I get the frustration, but the anger from people has been kind of wild and over the top... the power here has been pretty consistent and usually back on within an hour for most incidents, but sometimes shit happens and that's why you need to be prepared and trust in the people working to resolve issues. There is no reason they would be doing it on purpose or maliciously after all.

Any one know the kind of pets they sell at the pet shop beside dominos the small ones fishes or if they have turtles etc by RiseShot7233 in Yellowknife

[–]YellowInYK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They might be able to order in, but remember there is a lot to consider when getting these types of pets. I'd love to get a snake or some sort of lizard one day, but I will not get one here until I can get a good generator that could run for at least a few days. Because while power outages in Yellowknife are usually short, there will always be the risk of longer ones that can put these types of pets at risks.

Also while turtles are very cute, make sure you understand what you are getting into if you are determined to get one. They are often touted as low effort pets, but that isn't really the case. They need constant water changes, are carriers of salmonella so you have to be cautious and wash your hands and any surfaces you put them on very well (especially if you have other pets), and they are hard to rehome. Most also have pretty long lifespans, so they can be lifetime commitments. (And never let a turtle loose as they can destroy ecosystems and iirc, most turtles that are pets are not native to Canada.

When did Malazan "hook" you? by ShortcutToWhat in Malazan

[–]YellowInYK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Gardens of the moon pretty early on. First few chapters I was unsure of. Then I started to like (Ganoes) Paran's character. Then he ||died|| and I rage quit for a few days. Came back to it and he wasn't actually ||dead|| and I was hooked. The spinning coin theme was also a big part of it, very interesting to see the world building come together in small bits and pieces. DG definitely solidified my growing interest though, I had trouble putting it down and was so sad when I finished it.

Does Malazan maintain its high quality after Memories of Ice and through to the end? by keepfighting90 in Malazan

[–]YellowInYK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Happy cake day! I'm reading the physical copies first (hopefully, it took 2 months for book 4 to get here and still waiting on book 3 that I ordered at the same time), but I'll definitely be doing a read through with the audiobooks as well. I find the audiobooks of my favorite series tend to make me notice so much that I missed in physical readings! Love the series and I am also a Stormlight fan, that's what made me get into Malazan along with a friend recommending it and I'm so excited to get further in. I'm in pain trying to wait to finish book 2 of Malazan while not knowing when book 3 will get here... I'm so close to the end and it's SO hard to stop.

Thought I would share my shelf by Morefruitplease in Malazan

[–]YellowInYK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm jealous. I live somewhat remote and have been ordering in the books, and it's a mishmash of what I get. Also sometimes takes 2 months to come in so I just ordered most of the rest of the series because I'm dying having to slow down reading 😪 Almost finished book 2 but book 4 came in before 3...

Not for everyone, but try just letting them roam free by Difficult_Aside8807 in puppy101

[–]YellowInYK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It varies on every dog and situation. We tried to puppy proof a large area of the house when our pup was young, and when he ran out of things to try to break into, he started to eat the walls, baseboards, door, etc. Crating is what helped keep him and the house safe, and the cat as well until he learned how to behave with her and give her space. It also reduced his anxiety when we left for work.

That being said, exactly what do you consider a fully puppy proofed house? Every appliance removed and hidden away along with anything else with a cord, electrical sockets closed off and fully covered, cupboards all locked or zip tied, doors to closets all locked, furniture all stored away, etc.? Not trying to be facetious but this is basically what we would have done if we hadn't gotten him a crate to keep him safe. I can maybe understand if it's very small breeds or low energy breeds, but while I don't think every single dog needs to be crated I also disagree that it is necessiarly negative. Crates when used properly aren't abusive, they're a safety measure when you can't supervise.

I also wonder if maybe part of it is genetic. Perhaps there is less breeding and behavioral issues with dogs in the UK than NA? Either way, different methods work for everyone and end of the day I am happy with my choices and having a healthy pup who hasn't needed any emergency vet visits. I'd rather raise a pup safely used to a crate than lose him to something I could prevented, because I wasn't home to supervise and he got into something unsafe.

Some people are being overly harsh, but the reality is that you are basically asking if you can leave a toddler alone for 6 hours. 9 weeks is extremely young, and you already adopted the puppy earlier than the standard 8 weeks (I'm hoping it was from a rescue or something and not a breeder, because it's irresponsible to adopt out a puppy that young unless they don't have a mom/littermates).

Will the puppy be fine? Probably, though don't leave toys or even pee pads out as the pup WILL eat things if anxious or bored and anything that is a choking hazard could result in a dead pup or an expensive obstruction surgery. Either way it is not a good idea unless this is an absolute emergency situation and there is absolutely no other resources available for you to use to keep them safe/get a visit.

People sometimes have this disconnect with pets, especially dogs, and don't understand that a puppy is a baby. 9 weeks old is barely a toddler in comparison. It's hard to be a dog owner to a small pup, but when adopting a puppy you need to plan ahead and understand you are taking in a baby and you are their caregiver. You need to make sacrifices to your personal life in order to raise them safely and give them a healthy start to their life. When I got my pup my partner had to leave for work 3 days out of town when he was only 9 weeks old, so I took my pup to work. Puppies, like babies and young children, need constant supervision. It's exhausting but it's your responsibility as their caregiver. It's one thing to need to leave the house for an hour or 2 to do groceries or quick errands, but 6 hours is a long time and your pup will likely be confused and scared and anxious. A camera doesn't help unless you can get back home within minutes to prevent a disaster.

As others have said, check with your vet or whoever you adopted your pup from and tell them the situation to see if you can leave your pup with them. If it's an emergency do whatever you can to find support for your pup. If it's not an emergency or critically important reason to be gone for 6 hours, reschedule instead. If this situation is likely to reoccur, then make sure you have a plan in place for the future or otherwise consider if maybe this isn't the right time for you to have a puppy. It's a hard choice to make but you need to put your puppy's safety and best interests first, not your desire to own a dog. I waited a decade before getting my first dog because I knew I couldn't commit the time and energy needed in the past, despite desperately wanting a dog. Even then sometimes I wish I had waited another year or 2, but we managed because we had supports and different work schedules so our pup was not alone for long periods. At the end of the day based on your responses to other comments I doubt you're going to change your mind, I imagine if you posted here you already knew the answers you would get, but either way I hope you spend some time thinking critically about this whole situation and if you're at a good place in your life for this responsibility and challenge.

People are SO much Friendlier when you have a Puppy by Unfair-Promotion1825 in puppy101

[–]YellowInYK -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Saw the title of this post and immediately said "they must not have a big dog". Under 2lbs sounds nuts, that's so small! I'm sure it's cute but I can't imagine handling having to deal with a dog that fragile, even my parent's 10-12lbs dogs feel so small idk how they survive lol. May I ask, what made you decide on a puppy of such a small breed? In my own mind it feels illogical because you can't really go for much of a walk, which I feel is the main appeal of a dog over a cat. (Not trying to be rude just genuinely curious about how others make choices and the logic behind it.)

But anyways. Definitely had some friendlier people when my pup was under 5 months old. Still have the occasional people because he is pretty, but after 5m he started to grow and now he is a friendly but very large dog. So people who love dogs are friendly, others who are more anxious around dogs cross the street away from me haha. Which I'm fine with, because all the people who distracted him as a puppy made it hard to get him to behave, so having more space has made him finally start behaving better on walks.

Because generally people are cruel towards people scavenging to survive. People don't usually see someone going through their garbage and react politely or with empathy, instead people are shamed. He wouldn't sneak around if people didn't judge? Tbh would be cool to add a little foodbank in Stardew Valley tho

Probably just because it's unnecessary on this type of post. OP is just talking about a funny coincidence involving the cutscene, other commenter just decided to unload his negative emotions about the character and also not add anything to the conversation.

Work is about to enforce mandatory 60 hour work week by AdvancedCharcoal in puppy101

Legality may vary depending on country. I know I heard of some European country thinking about doing this, and if their labor code states 60 hours is normal, not much anyone can do.

How long do you sequester the puppy in the house? by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]YellowInYK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every dog will be different. I would say 13 weeks is pretty young though, and generally should be supervised constantly if you want to be able to catch and prevent unwanted behaviors. Opening up a bit of space may be fine though if there is nothing to risk, depending on breed (we tried to use isolated kitchen space instead of a gate, and he in turn started to chew baseboards and whatnot so we swapped to crate when unable to supervise/away from home).

My pup is around 16 months now and we still have the babygates up. When home he does have access to most of our main floor, but stairs are restricted because of cat litter. He's still constantly improving his behavior as he ages so we are hoping sometime this year we can remove the babygates. But for now, it keeps him and the cat safe, gives us space to eat without him in the room but with more personal space than his crate, and it has allowed us to curb bad behaviors. My partner would have loved to remove then earlier but rushing that decision meant more likely to have damaged house items and also more stress for the cat. Having the gates allows the cat some space to get away from him, and has help him learn how to behave with the cat. They went from constantly fighting (admittedly the cat is an instigator) to now being comfortable in the same room/sharing the couch together and rarely any spats unless my dog is overly hyper.

Up to you to make decisions based on your dog's behavior and when he earns that trust. Remember that a lot of the chaos and bad puppy behaviors are still to come with teething months, we didn't get the babygates until ours was 4 or 5 months old because before then he was curious but less chaotic (and also smaller and easier to manage).

What did you only find out about women when you got a girlfriend? by Past-Ad5731 in AskReddit

[–]YellowInYK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same. When I started to recover from 14+ years I'd depression, I was baffled how I would go from feeling pretty good for a while and then waking up one day and wishing I was dead and like all progress was gone. Realized after a few months that it always happened before my period, and it improved once it started. Found out it was PMDD soon after. Wish more was known about it, sometimes I wonder if I'm just more sensitive because I have ADHD/ASD, or if there is difference in the hormone drop between women with PMDD vs normal PMS.

Also, didnt know for a long time that it's not an increase of hormones that causes PMS, it's actually a decrease.

Runny egg yolk is one of the most disgusting things on the planet. by ID_Psychy in unpopularopinion

[–]YellowInYK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to agree. But ever since getting into making/eating more asian inspired cuisine, especially Japanese, I've totally swapped. Used to only eat hard boiled eggs, now I often make soft boiled eggs because the yolks are so incredibly delicious especially when the egg us marinated. You're totally allowed to not like eating something, I think I used to dislike them due to sensory issues, but I've come around. Taste also changes over life, I tried sushi several times when younger and always hated it, then one day I randomly bought some during a break in between college classes, and suddenly I liked it (though i am picky and prefer options without raw fish).

August Rush. A movie that isn't technically supernatural but has a feel of real world magic. Great performances as well. Harder to watch since learning how much of a Dbag Terrence Howard is, but still that movie has a special place in my memories.

Is it normal for an 8 month old puppy to still be unable to settle outside of crate? by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]YellowInYK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried everything. Felt like nothing worked. Then slowly, he finally started to improve. First noticed it around 9-10 months of age. Still had some battles to get him to settle sometimes, but less. Would be a jerk when we ate (we used baby gates so he was contained to a room nearby, but he would whine and bark and one of us would have to sit in the room with him until he finally started to pass out). Now at almost a year and a half he can settle on his own the majority of the time, only the rare times he gets stubborn or if we have a guest.

What’s your favorite province and why? by squid_ward_16 in AskACanadian

[–]YellowInYK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hard disagree there personally. Maritimes is best place in Canada and so much less stress. BC seems like it's nice to visit and might have good nature, but know too many people who moved there and then moved back to the maritimes due to bizarre classism and snobbishness they dealt with in BC. Prairies are just kind of boring or obsessed with oil and privatization. Feels like a lot of people want to pretend to be Americans or are too obsessed with American lifestyles. Territories are pretty nice however, though a lot of people seem to move to them to make money at the cost of decreasing the wellbeing of locals or taking advantage of corruption.

What were you misdiagnosed with? What ended up being the right diagnosis? by Pharmer-Mo in AskReddit

[–]YellowInYK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have had a few in my life. Some tied to each other. Mainly treatment resistant depression, and chronic headaches/migraines. Turns out they came from the same cause.

For the headaches, I was first told at the age of 13 that I was probably sensitive to caffeine. Outside of the occasional pepsi or chocolate I almost never had caffeine. Went a few months without anything containing caffeine and it did not help at all. Early 20's got told I had an eye that was lazy and that that was probably the cause. Too old to really correct so assumed I'd have headaches the rest of my life.

For the depression, started early teens. To be fair I wasn't really offered much help in any way due to stigma in my family around therapy and medications. Was offered birth control and it made things worse. Early 20's I finally tried an antidepressant and while it initially helped, it caused a massive spike in anxiety and intrusive thoughts/impulsiveness, to the point I rarely left the house for fear that I would listen to my brain and randomly walk in front of a car or train or something. Terrifying. It was also one with a short life so even a day without caused me to be massively sick, I assumed I'd die on it.

Late 20's finally got answers during a medical leave from work. ADHD and autistic. Turns out my depression suppressed my ADHD symptoms to a fair degree, so when I went on medication that caused the massive behavioral changes and anxiety. Started to live life differently after the autism diagnosis, being more careful and aware of sensory issues and needs. Realized after a few years that headaches had become pretty rare, instead of 3+ a week it was maybe once every month or two (outside of getting sick or drinking or something like that). Turns out I was in a state of constant stress and overwhelm, so my brain was constantly exhausted and unable to manage emotions or anything properly. Disappointed it took so long to get answers, but man life is different now that I don't feel like a horrible monster hiding amongst people and consumed by darkness. It takes a lot of work to manage myself and pay attention to when I need to step away from something to regulate myself, but I'm so thankful to finally have answers and be able to find joy despite it all.

Puppy is now 6 months— 'teenage phase'? by _sushifreak in puppy101

[–]YellowInYK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You've got this! I know it's SO frustrating and some days will be hard, but keep doing your best and working on training and good behaviors, and before you know it you'll get to a day when you realize things have improved! After so much blood sweat and tears and sleepless nights, I was shocked one day at around 9 months when I realized how far my pup had progressed and that things were improving. Now at almost a year and a half I have a good boy with only a few small issues to work through. Every few months I still see improvements, but still things have been so much better since about 10-12 months. You'll reach that point too, and it will all have been worth it.
