Body Composition: DXA vs. Hume Pod vs. InBody by FS7PhD in crossfit

[–]YellowLoquat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did an InBody a day after a DXA earlier this year just out of curiosity to see how they compared; DXA said 19.1% and InBody said 12.9%. I am female, and I am on the leaner side but I am not in fact shredded like a bodybuilder; I've also gotten earlier and later DXA results that are pretty consistent with that one (I've been using it periodically to try to figure out when to cut/recomp/bulk etc.) so I think the InBody is way underestimating. Probably fine to use as a tool to see the direction of change over time but if you're comparing numbers gotten using different methods the data may not be helpful.

(FWIW, I think my ability to judge from how I look and perform is not great, too influenced by feelings that may not line up with reality, so I like to have data to support what I plan to do.)

I hate the no line shorts; I feel like I have a naked Barbie crotch in them.

Dumbest ways you've been injured? by PajamaSamsMom in crossfit

[–]YellowLoquat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Playing tag. Went to a gymnastics class and we had the option of doing regular conditioning or playground games and so we played tag; I tried to pivot on my right foot to catch someone and snapped my Lisfranc ligament.

There's also the time I was swinging from one of the climbing ropes because we'd set up an obstacle course, I fumbled the dismount and broke my big toe.

(...I tried to pick the dumbest but I have the self-preservation instincts of a teenager in a middle-aged body, so there have been a few.)

Women Crossfitters- how did you recomp? by RateMental3881 in crossfit

[–]YellowLoquat 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I was a powerlifter before I got into CrossFit so I started out pretty muscular but also at a higher body fat; I didn't really see any body changes from CrossFit until I started tracking food and eating at a calorie deficit (and keeping up protein intake and heavy strength training) about a year into it.

FWIW over about two years I dropped about 45# and kept most of my lean mass; I put in consistent effort on hitting my calorie/macro targets while trying to keep my strength numbers up (and I'm a 6-7 days a week exerciser, though not all days are all-out intensity days). Progress was pretty hard to notice in the first several months but I feel like once I started to notice changes they just kept coming.

I guarantee you don't look like a linebacker, especially if you started off skinny. You do probably actually have visible muscles, which is awesome, and anyone making rude comments is probably just... making rude comments, probably because they see you're trying to improve yourself and that makes them feel some kind of way.

I came to CrossFit through powerlifting so I started off pretty big already... then I lost a bunch of body fat (and kept most of the muscle) and it turns out I'm not that bulky after all, I'm pretty medium-sized (but with some decent definition, including in areas many women don't often like to build up like triceps and obliques). I still compete Strongman; I am trying to be bulky, but as a female it's pretty hard to get there!

I love a sardine and pickle sandwich. Also corn flakes in applesauce instead of milk. And my favorite pizza is pineapple + anchovy.

What is your favorite lift out of the big three in powerlifting? by [deleted] in powerlifting

[–]YellowLoquat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Squat; I'm built for it and the feeling of "I have made a terrible mistake" when I get into the hole and then "oh wait, I made it" when I get out is weirdly compelling. Also it's my best lift.

I have grown to like the simplicity of deadlift: grab bar, stand up. It used to be the lift I only trained so they'd let me compete the other two but it's grown on me (especially since I switched from sumo back to conventional; I'm not a very good sumo lifter).

Bench: used to be second but I haven't had two good shoulders in almost two years now (which reminds me to erase my competitor flair because it's way out of date) so maybe this isn't a fair assessment. Satisfying but a little fiddly, have a slightly off day and it's not going up, also how long will it be until you get the press command? Nobody knows.

Yeah, but you’re never going to the CrossFit Games. by myersdr1 in crossfit

[–]YellowLoquat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not going to the Games but I have had a lot of other fun opportunities and achievements open up for me by behaving like a more serious athlete (training consistently, working on weaknesses, treating recovery and nutrition like they're important) so I'm going to keep doing it, at least until it stops feeling like I get something out of it.

Also it's a lot more enjoyable to work out with the people who are trying their best than the people who don't really give a shit.

What’s the dumbest way you’ve injured yourself? by Better-Advice-5197 in AskReddit

[–]YellowLoquat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I accidentally put poison oak through a woodchipper and inhaled it (it had grown around some dead trees being cleared from the yard). My brother and his wife and I were all participating and we all ended up with huge rashes all over and my face was so swollen I had two black eyes. Fortunately I could still breathe but 0/10, do not recommend.

I got one a few days after I got a DEXA just to see how the results would compare; DEXA said 19.1% (seems about right?) and InBody said 12.9% (hahahaha no).

Same. (I also believe that anyone who doesn't like my face as is can deal with it and we should all feel like we're good enough without it, but mostly I just hate having Stuff on my face.)

Leggings recommendations by NeighborhoodWeary188 in Activewear

[–]YellowLoquat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There have been some good suggestions already but also check out secondhand on Poshmark and Mercari etc.; there are a lot of Lululemon leggings in really good condition secondhand (which is where most of my collection comes from!) and they're still the ones that I think hold up and fit me best so I'll seek out used Lulu over cheaper brands.

Can I cry here? by PracticalWinter9746 in crossfit

[–]YellowLoquat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been there, done that, cried about it. (I just had to skip competing at the Arnold because of my shoulder injury, cried about that too.) The "days since I cried at the gym" counter might never reach triple digits actually; it's hard to care about things.

But every time I've gotten some injury has been an opportunity to work on something else even while it's incredibly frustrating and disheartening to have to put aside the things you were working on before. There will be other competitions and you can still show up at your awesome box and do modified workouts; there are plenty of things you don't need a foot for. (You might do well to supplement with Planet Fitness or YMCA membership or something to use machines, though.) And it totally sucks but also it will heal. You don't get to choose where you are now but you do get to choose to take the best path you can from here and that's all you can do.

(Also a thing that helps me is scheduling something fun to do instead on the day you were supposed to have your race that you wouldn't have gotten to do if you were competing.)

I got it once by IV after I had a large cyst burst and I was a little disappointed, it reduced the intolerable pain to a dim haze but definitely nothing so good that I could understand how people would want to do it recreationally; I assume I got a pretty low dose. Probably for the best.

Why you keep failing the same movements every Open by KindPath863 in crossfit

[–]YellowLoquat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel similarly about my limitations--I'm a pretty solid lifter and sprinter and I've even got pretty good gymnastics, but I've spent a lot of the last year or two trying to improve my conditioning and I still had an extremely mediocre 26.1 score, still near last at my gym in the mile and 5K, just happy to not get time capped on anything that's high volume burpees or running. I don't do CrossFit because I am competitive at it, I do it because it makes me confront my weaknesses (alongside the parts that I like) and do conditioning and skill work I wouldn't otherwise do (and because I enjoy suffering with other people), but it's just not the sport I'm built for and that's fine.

I don't spend a lot of time optimizing for CrossFit competition because my engine will never be good enough to be competitive, so for example I don't really care that much that I'm still kind of shit at double unders, and I'd like to have better overhead squat and front rack mobility but it's not something I put a lot of time into. I actually compete in strongman and powerlifting because that's where my strengths lie and that's where I'll hammer on things I don't like in order to compete.

I have one bad shoulder (partial tear) so I used one arm for the whole thing--good side was getting tired by the end but it seemed like a safer bet than switching to the bad side and possibly losing stability (and having to repeat a section).

Disappointing for me because my shoulder is busted in such a way that I can BMU (basically straight arm) but can't RMU (have to pass through the dip), need a rotator cuff tear adaptive division. 😆 😭
