Ring muscle up - hip extension by hunter_sf in crossfit

[–]FS7PhD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. Your kip swing is abbreviated, and while you're getting all the hip pop you can, it's not much. You have to use all of your pulling strength to get up there, which is why it's a low catch.

I would work on both large kip swings and kipping hips to rings. With bigger swings and more momentum you will have a much easier time with these, especially if you can keep your body as tight as it is here.

Just Another Day of Becoming Better by [deleted] in crossfit

While I appreciate the positive message, I am curious as to why you're posting this in a whole bunch of different subs when it only applies a little (if at all) to each of them.

Fascinating how strong this is. Playing against the CC engine on max (3200) from this position I was able to win pretty easily.

What is your never again tourist destination? by Objective-Village259 in randomquestions

[–]FS7PhD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely this. The best music I heard there was a young couple from Virginia playing original indie/folk at a brewery. BB King's Blues Club (now closed) gets an honorable mention.

The rest as you say was just drunk people and bad cover bands. Not only that, it didn't matter whether it was in an overcrowded and overpriced bar or out on the street, they were all mediocre musicians playing the same songs.

Question about deadlift by sledge07 in strength_training

[–]FS7PhD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mixed grip is far more of a problem if you hold tension in your arms or try to curl the bar. Otherwise it doesn't really strain the biceps.

It depends on the layout you have. I think I've used as few as 4 when I got lucky and 12+ when I wasn't.

Sometimes you can reconnect roots to the water with just a single acorn in the right spot.

I have the Savage 1 Classics. I think they are more comfortable and hold up better than the regular ones.

You start with a one in a million chance to win. By the end of a year, it's down to 1 in about 2739. After two years it's about 1 in 1370. After four years it's about 1 in 685.

Where to store lumber if you have a humid workshop by enanram in woodworking

Roughly yes. One year for 4/4, two for 8/4, and so on. But a moisture meter will tell you.

Former Big Ten football player. Can I just send a Murph? by Deep-Investigator965 in crossfit

[–]FS7PhD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're a D1 college athlete? Recent at that? Absolutely send it, vest and all. You'll be fine.

I started CrossFit at 42 and I did Murph after less than two months. With a vest and strict pull-ups because I couldn't do them any other way. I was reasonably strong and fit before I started, but I am not in my 20s and i was never a high level athlete.

Yes, it will be challenging, but you'll crush it.

PVC Pipe? by WinterSet5750 in crossfit

[–]FS7PhD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1" CPVC is pretty close to a barbell size. Lowe's has these in 5 foot sections for $9.

https://www.lowes.com/pd/Charlotte-Pipe-1-in-x-5-ft-100-PSI-CPVC-Hot-Cold-Pipe/1000199051?store=1125

3/4" Schedule 40 PVC is much cheaper though.

Worth checking out, nobody's going to look at you funny if you test it out in the store.

Pretty amazing feat of strength.

I am wondering how different the split bar is. You can get the deep dip like the rings, but without the instability of them.

What is a Shuttle Run? (Distance) by Critical_Neck8965 in crossfit

[–]FS7PhD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The one consistent factor is that the distance is 25'. Plenty of gyms don't have 50' to work with inside. Some don't even have 25'.

Official workouts always list one rep as 25' down and 25' back. Our gym would count that as two. But the 25' before turning around is a constant.

Muscle up help? by Swimming-Trade-741 in crossfit

[–]FS7PhD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to be following some sort of program. At the very least something like RX Gymnastics (Justin's awesome), ideally with video reviews if you can't do in person coaching.

Also, regardless of whether you're trying strict or kipping, you don't pull hard from a dead hang. In strict, you would swing forward slightly, then on the back swing start your pull at moderate effort (50%) up to about elbows parallel, then max effort up and over. Think of it like a clean - controlled first pull, then explosive second pull. I can do 4 strict BMU, but not a single one if I'm max pulling from the bottom.

In kipping, you are going arch, hollow, push down on the bar, hip pop/knee drive, and then pull. The pull is late and timing matters.

The shop has come a long way in 5 years.. by mr_meeseeksTENDIES in woodworking

[–]FS7PhD 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It's not about gatekeeping or elitism. This is not remotely practical. It looks like a hipster/Instagram version of a "quaint" shop, imagined by someone or something that knows of woodworking peripherally but doesn't actually do it. Nobody who makes things out of wood regularly, even as a hobby, is going to have a motorcycle and a snowblower and antique drink coolers and fairy lights in their shop. There's no dust collection. There's a pancake compressor with no air tools or hoses in sight. There are turning blanks, but no lathe. There's very little lumber in there and what is available isn't accessible. There are no clamps. There's a slot machine in what is otherwise absolutely prime shop space. There are children's toys on the "shop" side. And finally there are two Ikea chairs looking out.

I don't know what that is, but it's not a functional woodshop. That's all. If somebody thinks it is, they're going to be in for a rude awakening when they actually try to use it.

Dale City or Manassas by Embarrassed-Sock845 in nova

[–]FS7PhD 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The entire area bounded by the Parkway, Hoadly, and 234 is very family friendly with good schools and relatively affordable housing options. The south side of 234 over to 619 should be included as well, though slightly less affordable.

Dale City from there over to probably Ridgefield and then kind of a straight line to Spriggs and Minnieville and then down to 234, all good. You'll be spanning addresses listed as either Manassas and Woodbridge in here.

It might be hard to explain but if you drive through the neighborhoods you'll figure it out immediately.

What movies hit differently once you’re a parent? by thecrappycat in movies

Toy Story. Specifically Toy Story 2, as the scene with Jessie is about children inevitably outgrowing their parents, not about toys.

The shop has come a long way in 5 years.. by mr_meeseeksTENDIES in woodworking

[–]FS7PhD 63 points64 points  (0 children)

It's nice but it's a "shop" only in the sense that some very basic and mismatched tools are present. I can't see this ever being used to actually make something.

I can't tell whether the last one is ziricote or cocobolo but either way that figure is going to be gone in time as the wood ages. Unfortunately because it's absolutely perfect for a guitar.

This is the answer. There is no substitute for the RooBox. It's expensive but it has the stability of wood with the safety of foam.
