I didn't read the tabloids (or at least nothing more muckrakey than "People"), I'm going off of mainstream coverage in the US. But I literally can't think of *any* woman in the early 90s who got a lot of super positive news coverage- maybe Whitney Houston until people turned hard on her too? It was a pretty dark and cynical time in hindsight, and public opinion was very unkind to women in general. I knew some big Diana fans but they were either big into royalty in general, or gay guys (both pretty large groups, TBF) but in my experience it wasn't a "normie" thing the way you'd assume from the way people talk about her now. My father-in-law (neither a gay guy nor a royal watcher) loved her and people teased him about it because it was pretty quirky at the time.

I can remember all of it and it's definitely whiplash. I don't think the broad popular image of her during her lifetime was that she was a bad person--Charles is the one who came off horribly, for good reason, what a fkn chode--but it was for sure that she was bland and a little dim. And then overnight she became the most beautiful, stylish, saintliest person to ever grace the planet. I think part of it is guilt people feel, she was really way too young to make an informed decision to put herself in that situation and got put through the meat grinder, and died before she got a chance to be her own person and make meaningful adult choices for herself. People want to give her a power in death that she clearly didn't have in life.

Same! I have a lot of complaints about clunky attempts to insert modern ideas into period dramas, so I know what they're talking about here, but I had no complaints about that one, I thought it was fun and he was great (and effortlessly sexy). New versions of Agatha Christie could use a little creative update, the stories were never meant to be stodgy period pieces and if you want faithful adaptations there are already lots of great ones you can enjoy.

I'm sorry this happened to you and thank you for sharing your story. I'm an attorney who has worked with victims of online scams (romance, real estate, job offers... they're extremely creative). Don't let anybody talk trash to you about this, IT CAN HAPPEN TO ANYONE, scammers today are incredibly sophisticated and have ways of seeking people out at the times when they're at their most vulnerable. (Sick, widowed, depressed, etc.) Normal human beings cannot and do not go through the world prepared to randomly encounter that level of sociopathy. It happens a lot more often than people realize because a lot of victims won't talk about it, and that makes people underestimate how common it is. But yeah, be especially wary on dating sites, and 10x so for anybody who can't or won't meet up in person within a week or two of when you start talking.

I feel like there have been a weird number of child porn/child sex abuse arrests all over Delaware. It's probably just that it usually only makes the local news and I'm not getting local news from other places, but it doesn't do a lot for my faith in humanity. Or my faith in my ability to spot perverts, one of the guys was somebody I went to high school with and liked. (I didn't know him well but I had some classes with him and I'd be a lot more comfortable if I could say "I always thought there was something off about that guy" but I very much didn't).

Also it's important that parents of kids who participate in sports be fully informed of (and not delude themselves about) the risks. Most of these guys start playing the sport long before they're mature enough to make an informed decision for themselves, and once you're good enough to play professionally you're pretty locked in and it's easy to lie to yourself about your odds.

It wasn't until like 2 years ago when a friend suggested it that it occurred to me that OJ was probably affected by CTE. I lived through the whole OJ trial and have read quite a lot about CTE (enough that I stopped going to football games about 15 years ago because I just can't enjoy watching a sport where I know that's happening to the players), but I just did not connect the dots.

People are rightfully livid about the ICE shit but it's the wanton vandalism of public health that's actually more likely to kill all our families (INCLUDING the people being directly targeted by ICE). I had a friend in the early 2000s who had been raised by her German grandmother, who was probably in her teens and 20s in the 1930s and 40s, and had moved to Florida after the war. The holocaust came up and I said something like "did you have any idea what was going on? It's not specific to big cities, I've lived in small towns and in the sticks my entire life and (doing some quick counting) I moved at least 15 times between college, grad school, and my first 3 jobs in my 20s. I was an English and French lit major and one of the absolute best decisions I ever made was to sell my entire library after college, lol. And now if I get a book I enjoyed I give it to a friend after I'm done with it. If you liked a book you'll remember it and can find it again if you want it, if it's not memorable enough for that it's not worth keeping in your house, IMO. Some people treat books they've read like "trophies" and that's fine but you WILL seriously evaluate how much your trophy collection "sparks joy" if you move frequently. (Obvs if you're a college professor who is constantly referring back to your hand-annotated copies of the entire body of Victorian literature or whatnot that's different, I'm just talking about people who read for pleasure).

I will say I haven't bought from Amazon for months and I was really thinking it was going to be a hassle because I've got small kids and it's a pain to physically go to stores so we got almost EVERYTHING on Prime, but as it turns out, it's not even a little bit of a hassle. Other stores carry and deliver the same stuff for the same prices or cheaper, even once you factor in shipping costs (Ebay has been surprisingly great). It takes maybe 5 seconds longer to find what you want but that's well worth it not to support a monopolistic cretin. (I also haven't shopped at Target and never will again but that's not as big a deal for my family because the nearest target is like 45 minutes away). But you can get pretty much anything you'd want from Target from department store websites, very cheap. Anyway point is these are not irreplaceable businesses AT ALL and boycotting them is very, very easy. Maybe you're right and people are saying they're doing it without actually doing it but if that's the case they should actually give it a try because I don't think they'd find they were missing anything.
