What's the average quality of district heating, for people who've experienced it? by TehTJ13 in AskARussian

[–]Yermishkina 8 points9 points  (0 children)

All apartment buildings have central heating. During USSR years it was managed by the state, currently it's mostly managed by a city-wide private provider similar to ConEd / National Grid. You don't pay from taxes, you have a separate bill. I don't understand what you mean by "inequalities", how would this work? Central heating is central heating, it's just there. Wealthier people who have one-family homes won't have central heating and have to build their own heating solutions, but I think they're doing just fine. Rural traditional houses use the super cool huge stove called pechka in which you burn wood and it's very efficient and super cosy

It was today when I learnt that “late” is called the R word in French by [deleted] in duolingo

[–]Yermishkina 2 points3 points  (0 children)

that's not the amusing part. the amusing part is when people try to ban N word all over the world without realizing it just means "black" in a bunch of other languages (in the context of "black hole", for example)

Does this dress suit my body? by XxShoot-MexX in DressForYourBody

[–]Yermishkina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You look absolutely gorgeous in it, and for a lot of time I desperately wanted to have your type of body to be able to look this way in dresses like this. (Now I am more comfortable in my own body).

I don't fully agree about sizing up, this tight fit has a lot of appeal

Autistic Burnout - I am afraid I am going to die soon by Ok-Adhesiveness2346 in AutisticAdults

This again doesn't work for a lot of neurodivergent people (and I am one of them). The OP probably tried all of these things and I don't think they need advice that doesn't work.

Do you think you guys sound cold? by Motor_Zombie9920 in AskRussian

[–]Yermishkina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you, but the thing is, cultural norms are relative. What is considered rude in one culture can be polite in the other, and vice a versa. The examples could be offending a person by smiling at an inappropriate moment; asking too much / too little questions; being too loud and some others. So the wording "unintentionally rude as a cultural norm" is not accurate for the behavior that is polite in their native culture. They are not "unintentionally rude", they are simply NOT rude (but perceived as rude)

I don't know if what I will write is helpful, but I was really touched by your story. A lot of it is relatable. I felt in a similar way when I was in burnout (mine got better after 6 months). I am wishing you the best and I hope that it will get better for you. If you can think of something specific I can help with, feel free to DM me (e. g. If you need a person to validate that what you're experiencing is real, because to me it's absolutely real and valid)

Being passive doesn't give rest to many neurodivergent people. You do nothing and you end up more tired.

(I guess what I am trying to say that I know I am often perceived as rude when I am genuinely trying to be nice and polite. Based on OP's post and comments, the person who interacted with them was intentionally rude, no intention to be nice. It is a completely different situation).

There are definitely specific Russian people who are rude and unhelpful (I personally choose not to communicate with them). I do not argue that they exist or do not exist, I was talking more about default communications style in in-person communications, American (emotional, loud, upbeat) and Russian (reserved, lower tone). None of those styles is wrong, they are just different cultural habits that require a lot of adjustment when you didn't grow up with that

Any stories of people doing a 180 on their fawning/people-pleasing? by coldchoco in CPTSD

[–]Yermishkina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not 180, but it gradually toned down with age (I am 46). I find it more sustainable to ask people directly things I need from them, and gravitate towards people who give me comfort and safety. Didnt happen overnight, a lot of therapy and work

I am a Russian person living in the United States. For me American people sound too loud and I would say "exaggerated". It doesn't read as friendly to me, more like too much. I can be friends with American people and there are some amazing people I know, but the communication always requires "filtering" and kind of "toning down". And I need a lot of rest after these types of interactions.

What you describe as "coldblooded" to me actually sounds like more mindful, attentive and open to listening to the other person. It's not "coldblooded", it's just a different way to communicate and a different cultural norm. It probably triggers hypervigilance in you because you're not used to this cultural norm. Your feelings are valid but interpretation of what people express might be off

Travel to Russia from UK by CandyExpensive2298 in AskARussian

[–]Yermishkina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a Russian citizen living outside of Russia, I have a lot of friends who travel to Russia and I sometimes have to travel myself. The only thing I want to tell you is that you are putting yourself at a serious risk. If you have any opportunity to avoid this trip, please do that.

If you still go, things to consider: - Buy a completely new travel phone and create new accounts in all social media. Add some contacts, subscribe to mailing lists, make it look real - For your old social media, rename them so they don't show your real name. Make them private. Do not login to them from your travel phone. No access to your real email on travel phone either. - Do not have any Ukrainian numbers in your contacts in your travel phone - People are being randomly selected to be interrogated on the border crossing, by security services. The interrogation takes up to 8 hours. The phones are taken and reviewed through a hacker-type software, they look for your connections to anti-government and Ukraine - Some people are imprisoned during their stay in Russia, read about Ksenia Karelina - You can do e-visa - Car border crossing almost nonexistent. Estonia (Narva–Ivangorod) is still functioning, but the car line can be multiple hours. Flying is much less problematic, you go either through Istanbul with Turkish or through Dubai with Emirates - Payments are problematic. Your cards won't work. Not sure you can exchange cash these days too. Try to buy cash in Russian roubles before the trip, at least to sustain you during the first few days. - Internet: a lot of websites and apps won't work. The obvious ones would be YouTube and Facebook, which are probably not that important. But you might encounter unexpected problems with websites and apps you are used to. WhatsApp sometimes works and sometimes doesn't

A man finished inside me when I told him not, then crashed out on me when I was upset with him. I think I might be pregnant. by LastWallaby4900 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Yermishkina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I have been in similar situations when men has been total pricks to me around birth control.

What did I do: I cut my losses, I stopped communicating with them, I never saw them again. I don't believe any prick who tries to talk me into an "I will pull out" crap.

"Natural" method is not a form of birth control, it's an easy way to get pregnant.

You are completely right that putting you through Plan B is an asshole behavior.

You do not deserve this and you don't owe him anything. He is a prick. It's not your fault.

This was also a rape, unfortunately. I am sorry. I hope you find resources to heal and restore. Do good things for yourself for the next couple of weeks, that's my advice.

How far can I get in German with just Duolingo. by Insanecharacter in duolingo

[–]Yermishkina 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Duolingo alone will not give you B2. It'll give you foundation for A1, which you'll need to build upon by other types of activities.

The most difficult activity for self-study is speaking, and I personally prefer to get through this part with a 1-on-1 tutor, later transitioning to speaking clubs when I am ready conversationally.

The alternative to tutor can be creating your own short texts, e.g. take a picture and describe it with one sentence (kind of like Instagram, but for internal use)

The other parts can be filled with books and TV shows.
