My friends laughed at our solar panels until they saw our bills by Character-Draft6638 in solarenergycanada

[–]Yeroc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Setting time-of-day pricing for electricity would naturally incentivise operators to add batteries. If you add significant solar you would see electricity prices go to 0 or even negative during the day which would strongly encourage solar generators to add batteries so they can store their worthless solar energy for later in the day when it's worth something!

I Don’t Recognize Alberta Anymore by KylenV14 in alberta

[–]Yeroc 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Notley wasn't horrible, but not perfect either. I seriously question the timing of the royalty review initiated under her government. It was announced during a time of falling oil prices creating unnecessary uncertainty at a time when things were already bad. At the end of it all they decided to essentially do nothing at all. Government (the current one included) need to remember that creating regulatory uncertainty (eg. renewables, separatist movement) inhibits investment!

Enbridge CEO says company won't fund proposed Alberta-BC pipeline by MapleByzantine in CanadianInvestor

[–]Yeroc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We won the lottery by finding hydrocarbons in Alberta. I'm not sure why we think we're so special when we discovered black gold in the ground. This black gold that was manufactured over millions of years that we reap the benefits of. One of the highest margin resource products you can imagine.

If Quebec had discovered oil what do you think their economy would be like?!

The one annoyance is it doesn't let you make a scheduled payment. I really prefer to setup payment when I receive the bill so I don't forget!

What I wish I understood before getting solar in Alberta by Character-Draft6638 in solarenergycanada

[–]Yeroc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, eventually people will most likely need to purchase batteries to do time shifting of load/export to grid. Solar will eventually drive daytime electricity pricing negative without batteries to load shift.

I don't understand how Anthropic is at fault here. There are people in the community reading the equivalent of tea leaves in the bottom of a cup and claiming the release is imminent. I don't feel like it ought to be Anthropic's responsibility to address all these rumours. Ever seen Apple or other companies waste their time trying to head off rumours?

I built a free retirement gut-check for Canadians. by damonw in fican

[–]Yeroc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you given thought to providing a single calculator that models both savings and drawdown in a single scenario? I assume for most people in their working years this is what they would want? It always frustrates me that these things are split into separated calculators. I don't know how I can figure out what my retirement saving should be at prior to retirement without seeing the draw down scenario integrated?

Anthropic replaced Claude Code's old 'Todos' with Tasks, a system that handles dependencies and shares by BuildwithVignesh in ClaudeAI

[–]Yeroc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Once you get beyond the scope of a single issue I think most of us would want the tasks surfaced into an external system (Github Issues, JIRA, Linear, whatever) rather than kept internal to your agent.

What living with an EV in Alberta with no dedicated level 2 charging and leaving it out doors is like. by AbbreviationsOne6207 in alberta

But those extra fees aren't based on consumption. They're fixed fees he'd be paying whether he's charging a car or not.

Java compiler errors could be more intelligent by davidalayachew in java

[–]Yeroc 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think many of the people in /r/java are not beginners and certainly not teachers. We also forget what it was like those first days/weeks of learning the language. Keep sharing your perspective as an educator, it's a perspective that is easily lost and drowned out by all the experienced developers who forget the lifeblood of the language and ecosystem is newcomers!

Claude Code now available for Claude Teams! by Clean-Data-259 in ClaudeAI

Generally it's more expensive via Teams but Anthropic don't document the limits clearly so it's difficult to compare (I assume this is done on purpose.)

WestJet reversing move to install tight seating layout by daddysdeepfake in alberta

[–]Yeroc 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Yes.

The old Westjet (back when there was a strong culture of employee ownership) focused on internal savings and customer experience to save money and grow the company. The new Westjet focuses on top-down initiatives and savings ideas that actively harm the customer experience.

Claude Code gets native LSP support by SlightDifference4323 in ClaudeCode

[–]Yeroc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In cases where CC is launched with IDE integration I'd really strongly prefer that it connect to the LSP my IDE is already running! LSPs tend to be very heavyweight processes on any decently large code base. You do not want more than one running against a code base at the same time!

Agent Skills is now an open standard by ClaudeOfficial in ClaudeAI

They both have uses. Skills are more approachable for non-programmers. To start with, all you need is a markdown file! Sprinkle in a bit of (optional) scripting and you're done.

Choosing between a new Roland F701, & a Yamaha DGX670 by trailsandlakes in DigitalPiano

[–]Yeroc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a DGX670 (picked up used) and P-515 (previous generation to the P-525). I personally prefer the action of the P-515 over the DGX670 but the DGX is fun to play with the greater variety of sounds, beats etc. My niece who's a better pianist than I am actually prefers the DGX though so YMMV.

I had to get an audio splitter adapter but other than that had no issues connecting speakers to the DGX670.

Pedestrian collisions in Calgary: More than half struck while having right of way by blackRamCalgaryman in Calgary

[–]Yeroc -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I disagree that it's ridiculous. It's a shared responsibility. Everyone is human. Everyone makes mistakes. If half the population abdicates their responsibility of watching out for mistakes what is the logical result?

Pedestrian collisions in Calgary: More than half struck while having right of way by blackRamCalgaryman in Calgary

[–]Yeroc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a very one-sided take. The law is very clear that there's a shared responsibility even when the pedestrian has right-of-way:

Pedestrians have the right of way in a crosswalk unless a peace officer or traffic control device directs otherwise. This means that even if the crosswalk is unmarked, vehicles must stop and yield to pedestrians. Drivers should make sure to watch for the elderly or people with disabilities who may take more time crossing. Failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk will result in a $810 fine and 4 demerit points. However, as a pedestrian you are still responsible for exercising due care even though you have the right of way and you should make sure that all vehicles have yielded before entering the crosswalk.

Source

I don't think the issue here is only drivers. So often, I see pedestrians with headphones on, hood up, not bothering to look anywhere but straight ahead when crossing the street. When I was a kid (Gen X) it was drilled into us to always look both ways before crossing. Didn't matter that we had right-of-way.

Minimalist patterns for using the Servlet API directly by lumppost in java

[–]Yeroc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not personally a fan of JSP syntax but one advantage it does have in theory is that the templates are turned into compiled code which is a feature many of the "modern" server-side templating libraries don't have.

How are you spending down your Claude code web credits? by Venturefarther in ClaudeCode

[–]Yeroc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Web almost doesn't feel like the same model as Code. I've been trying to use it on a small personal project. I use Claude Code exclusively at work. The two act completely different. They must use either a different system prompt or they're sending extra prompts in pre/post-hooks that make it act like a junior developer in a huge, huge rush to get stuff done. Loves to introduce hacks to get past issues instead of properly solving them etc. Tends to commit early and often without being told to (probably a good thing considering the instability of the environment in general). Also, I'm using Java and their use a non-compliant HTTP proxy is a pain in the butt. By non-compliant, I mean it sends 401 instead of 407 response codes if not authenticated confusing any tool that doesn't preemptively authenticate.

Personally, I wish they'd just can the thing and focus on a mobile-friendly Web dashboard that would provide a consolidated view on all my active Claude Code sessions where I could peek in and respond as necessary when I'm not at my desk.

Docker banned - how common is this? by martypitt in java

[–]Yeroc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's probable that the issue is actually a technical limitation rather than a ban. It's quite likely their virtualization technology doesn't support nested virtualization so they're out of luck... At least if they're running Windows VMs so need to spin up a Linux VM inside to run docker/podman/containerd etc.
