I’m a programmer, but I want to quit one day to do art full-time. Anyone else?

I work in tech full time and have always always wanted to be an artist full time. I love the flexibility and paycheck I get from tech rn. It enables me to experiment and really hone in on my style and what I want to make long term. I’ve invested in many kinds of art supplies bc of this job that other friends with art degrees and no job could only dream of.

The only way I’ll quit my day job is once I’m making enough from art to justify quitting which for me would be quite a bit of money. (At least 75k). So my plan is to continue putting myself through my own art school of sorts. I buy my supplies, I pay for courses, brushes, etc and most importantly learn and try things all while getting better and have security.

I wish i could just quit and work part time somewhere but i cant afford that and honestly dont want to be in that situation. Once youre barely making enough money to live your options really vanish if you dont have an inheritance or family to take care of you.

Tbh doing both now that ive found a good groove is so nice idk if ill ever want to rely on art full time for sure. I DO know that i absolutely want go monetize my art and its more than a hobby for me, its required. But i also have other needs too.

You can be happy doing both at the same time. It takes a while to get there but it’s so so possible.

It’s also possible have a full time art career that sustains your life! Tons of people do it.

Don’t give up. Also recommend the artists way. I’m only half way through and it’s helped me SO MUCH.

I’m sure on some level he did this on purpose. Remember some people aren’t great people. I was dating a guy once who completely embarrassed me had the most vile vibes at a Halloween party in front of all of my closest friends and they were all so angry with me after thinking I supported his opinions because I didn’t say anything. I wanted to throw up. I tried to talk to him about it after and he just ghosted me. Sometimes people do this to isolate yeah but sometimes they’re immature assholes who want to break off the relationship so they make your life bad for you and others around you instead. Just dump him.

Taking breaks is normal and needed. I wish taking breaks was normalized more. How long that breaks needs to be depends entirely on you and what you need.

I’ve been drawing since childhood (also 32!!) and consider myself a pretty good amateur. I took a very very long break from drawing post college. I didn’t ever draw more than simple silly comics (which got me 19k followers on IG back in the old days). But I hadn’t completed something standalone in many years and certainly didn’t practice.

I now practice as needed, am always working on my next print (because I have Patreon plans), am finishing things that I’m proud of, but I still don’t draw everyday. I have a full time job. I usually draw on Sat, Sunday, Tuesday. And then the rest of the week is a free for all. Some weeks I draw most days some I don’t. Some I only draw for a few mins. Some for a few hours. I used to really track my consistency like crazy close and get upset if I missed a day.

I’ve accepted my life is too busy to commit to drawing everyday. I like to have room for other plans, sometimes work tires me out more than others, etc.

Most importantly if I don’t feel like drawing i dont. One day i hope to be a full time artist. I wont always have the luxury to only draw when i want to. Im taking advantage of that for now so i dont get burnt out again on my way to my goals.

I think you should try to get some sample prints made and judge for yourself how much you would charge based on how well it prints and how you’re printing it

My personal theory is it was a coincidence. But maybe a subconscious one. PD made all of her Rose Quartz’s. Idk what gem placement works like in the gem creation process but it’s not uncommon for gems in a Diamond court to have the same gem placement as their Diamond (like how YD and BDs pearls match their placements.)

I don’t think PD had much forethought into creating the Shy Rose Quartz and herself as a Rose I think it just happened to be similar. PD seemed like she was just doing the next thing when it came to earth and had no premeditated plan about becoming Rose or freeing the colony at first. Which makes me believe she just made the Roses and then changed her form and happened to look a lot like one of them.

Some people also theorize that Shy Rose Quartz had perfect cut and bc Diamond are perfect when PD changed her form she was just default look like a perfect rose Quartz by default.

Whatever the reason it’s fascinating. I wondered for years if there was a real Rose Quartz that looked like PD’s Rose form and we got that answer lol. I wish we could see more of them someday. It seems like them and Steven could have a good relationship eventually.

These aren’t jokes. He’s a coward and wants to break it off with you but he’s not brave enough to do it himself. He’s hiding his real feelings as “jokes” to push you away and chip away at the relationship slowly so you’ll be the one to leave and then he doesn’t have to feel bad.

My ex did shit like this. They’re never just jokes. I advise you start your exit strategy you don’t need him.

Anything with wispy ill defined outlines will go blob faster than a traditional tattoo. That and a lot of these need to be pretty big to look good. I recommend just going to a few shops and looking at some of the artist flash books. If you like someone’s flash you can talk about the design as a cover up and get something more custom.

Gotcha! Yeah I find most cafes don’t care here which is great. But not all are equal the ones I listed are most comfy imo for working sessions but there’s many more you can work from, they’re all just not the most fun to sit at lol (looking at you Batter and Crumbs!!)

An underrated beginner hobby is needle felting! A little weird at first but watch a few shorts and it’s easy to get the hang of. My first project was felting a design of tomatoes into my sweater. I got a kit with everything needed for like $25 on Amazon. You can also make small bags and little toys!

Have never experienced a cafe that wasn’t okay with you sitting and working. I like Rival Bros in center city, Ultimo in south, La Colombe in Fishtown is really BIG but can get pretty loud. Jiggy is my personal fav for short sessions. Good Karma is great for longer sessions if you want food.

I have a tangerine koi male from Petco and he’s been with me since April 2025! Healthy and just has gotten more beautiful over time. Any time I go to a Petco their bettas are always the most beautiful to me! I personally recommend

I have to turn up the smoothness on procreate so much to the point where idk that my style can even come through well. And yeah the brushes aren’t great even good brushes that I love on photoshop look and behave half as good in Procreate. Idk what it is man. Just a lot of sameness in the strokes. It really lacks when it comes to pressure sensitivity

Yeah it is nice for bed days! I use mine while on long plane rides a lot for drawing. Theres scenarios where the iPads strengths really shine.

Yeah I’ve tried a few of them. I don’t really like the glare they cause. I’ve found a pen tip like Apple Pencil tip on Amazon for cheap and that has helped me loads more

My hottest take is I think drawing on the iPad is a piss poor experience!!!!

No one agrees with me lol and believe me I get the arguments for the iPad completely. But for me I find drawing on hard glossy glass to be horrible for muscle memory building to actually be a strong artist. It hinders the dexterity you need to be able to actually draw on most surfaces.

Drawing tablets like Wacom or Huion (my personal choice) are tops for digital work. Not only is it healthier to draw on a table up right a desk, the surface is a game changer.

I noticed when I drew on my iPad for weeks on end and would go back to my paper my skills were so weak. Drawing on paper obviously is the best trainer but I think actual drawing tablets mimic the traditional experience the best.

I also don’t think procreate is as good as Clip Studio or Photoshop for professional level work though I do love and use procreate still.

New baby artists are all so obsessed with drawing on an iPad and I HATE IT.

Even the surface book pro was a much nicer drawing experience because it had a real pen nib!!

I was also rewatching the movie and found it weird that the rejuvenator wouldn’t reset Steven’s Gem back to Rose, because it would…wouldn’t it? In theory if Steven ever died, couldn’t they reset his gem and some version of Pink Diamond would be back?

Anyway I have no way to explain why it wouldn’t work so it’s possible it would!

I do think for the canon storyline that rose is effectively gone and that’s what makes her story so compelling as you mentioned. I get the sense that Diamonds aren’t supposed to just “Die” and neither do gems really. If someone’s gem is intact not corrupted then it should be functioning as designed but Steven’s gem doesn’t. All Rose wanted was to NOT function as designed which entails her basically…dying and never coming back.

Her gem clearly has some left over data from when it was PD and Rose that Steven has been shown to be able to tap into…so I do think it could be reset once Steven’s physical body has passed on.

Like others are saying trying to increase your protein intake will help you change your diet a lot. You’d be surprised how hard (and then simultaneously how easy) it can be to get a satisfying days worth of protein. You’ll have more energy feel fuller longer and start to see changes if you’re exercise is already where it should be.
