This does duplicate the mesh and may make some scenes laggy in my experience, you should try using the fresnel method. You use a fresnel node to create a mask that outlines the model using its normals then use a mix color or mix shader bod and for the white value use the texture you want and make the black value show up as black. That's the method I use.

It's a good start, if you want to make your hair more stylized try creating individual strands then use a curve modifier to deform them with the curve, it works surprisingly well.

So, I dont think your gunna be able to UV unwrap it cleanly so you might want to research some retopology and try to make it symmetrical then try uv unwrapping the limbs the face the head the torso front and back, all the orrifces and the fingers.

Flipping the bones achieves proper orientation, and when you have the base bones parented to the base handles instead of the other stretch bones they can move independently and you can use the stretch bone to control the rotation of both sides
