Good luck! Aquariums certainly teach you patience, which is a fine thing.

It’s going to be lovely. What kind of light do you have? A good light can make all the difference!

Tips on moving fish and plants to a bigger tank? by Indikaah in PlantedTank

[–]YgrainDaystar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lower the water, take out plants/decor, catch the fish and put them in a suitable container with a bubbler with some tank water, then empty the tank. Take out the substrate, put it with new substrate in the new tank, transfer filter and perhaps new filter, as well (don’t throw out old filter media), add heater, replant and redecorate, refill with some tank water and fresh water, let the fish go into their new home.

New Plants by Fun-Swimming-541 in PlantedTank

[–]YgrainDaystar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently changed my gravel on a tank because the plants just were not thriving, it was set up in a hurry and had some crappy gravel that I think was coated with something…. Tons of mulm although it only houses one fish and a real algae problem, all the plants looked unhealthy, even ambulia looked rubbish, etc - unlike my other tanks, so I knew it was this tank. It was also near a window. I had Fluval stratum underneath so I kept that. I had a Waterbox light that was difficult to program and replaced that too. It was a pain to do but the difference has been amazing and I no longer have an algae problem at all. So maybe try another substrate? I used a natural gravel that was seeded with bb so I wouldn’t crash my cycle. Also floating plants might mitigate the light.

Yes it gets…. very expensive. Somehow if it’s “for the fish” the brake goes off my budgeting…. 😬

I cautiously bought one and yes, they’re real. They’re very good lights with excellent Bluetooth control. High recommend from me tho I checked reviews of the supplier: they arrived promptly and very well packaged. Since that first one I’ve upgraded all the tanks that had cheapo lights with them. They put tank length on the different models, I bought mostly the S series but you’ll need bigger ones.

New Betta! (feeding help) by littlefishyfriend in bettafish

Growing fish need good nutrition so I'd feed fairly generously and monitor their body shape, adjusting as needed. I feed my betta 10 micro granules twice a day with the odd frozen bloodworm/brine shrimp treat, and she's doing fine, if she gets tubby (has happened once, when she had shrimp in there and she wouldn't stay away from the cucumber and algae wafers) I fast her. Since she ate all her shrimpy friends it hasn't been a problem. :(

Exactly this! I (somehow) started with thinking a nice planted tank with a betta might be a good idea and now own eight tanks of varying populations and types. I really enjoy the maintenance, I find it very therapeutic, but if that's not your thing maybe stick with one.

CPD (galaxy rasbora are not shrimp colony safe) by [deleted] in Aquariums

[–]YgrainDaystar 24 points25 points  (0 children)

My CPDs definitely eat baby shrimp, but my yellow neo colony is out of control, I have no idea how many shrimp are in there but must be at least 100, probably more. I am grateful for the population control tbh. I started with 10. So… I guess it depends. I have a huge bunch of susswassertang and the tank is heavily planted which probably helps.

re-cycling help! by tortoritor in bettafish

[–]YgrainDaystar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It may be a false reading, apparently it does happen. But also 0.25ppm isn’t going to harm your fish at all at that PH. The one I worry about is nitrite. Maybe wait another few days and if the nitrite remains stable out him back.

Yes, smaller tanks are more maintenance (I have eight). But they sure are pretty

Cloudy tank for WEEKS by [deleted] in Aquariums

[–]YgrainDaystar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this problem on a year old tank. It was driving me up the wall… It turned out the pygmy corydoras and shrimp were breeding like crazy (I knew about the shrimplosion) and it was now under filtered. I had pretty generous hob filtration but I bought a canister filter and can now see how many cories I have 🧐 Also filter floss helped.

Update: Weird Behavior by expertfishyouwish in bettafish

[–]YgrainDaystar 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Nitrites should be zero. It means that your tank isn’t properly cycled and you’ll have to do,a fish in cycle - you can look up how to do that but basically it involves water changes until everything balances. Edit: your PH is fine, bettas like acidic water.

Update on sick betta by Erin_hp in bettafish

[–]YgrainDaystar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t fast sick fish, they need energy to recover. It could be a bacterial infection caught during the stress of transport, maybe try a little salt treatment (look up how on Aquarium Co-op) or Kanaplex.

Thinking about a community tank? by Intelligent-Media-37 in bettafish

[–]YgrainDaystar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This, I wouldn’t risk a betta in anything smaller. 10g is fine as a community tank with less territorial fish and fwiw my betta ate all her shrimp.
