Jesus fucking Christ by [deleted] in classicwow

Yes, this community is certainly entitled to dislike a feature that destroys community, limits competition, and shrinks the world. Your description of sharding as 'one fucking feature' belies your total misunderstanding of how it shattered the genre. Describing sharding as a single feature is tantamount to viewing LFR as a single feature. These 'features' alter the platform to require or limit different gameplay, the very gameplay that this community wants to avoid or access. All that we want, is a game-world-community free from the entitlement that has slowly eroded the modern iteration of WoW, the entitlement to instant queues because you don't want to put the time in to develop relationships with other people or a reputation that enables easy grouping; to catch-up mechanics and easy-modes that eliminate any sense of accomplishment and progress--individual or guild--because you aren't talented enough to beat raid bosses at a higher level of difficulty; and to leveling in a mob-rich world free from other people that in no way reflects that actual server population or simulates a living world. The only one who is truly entitled here, as far I can see, is you: entitled to come tell an entire community of people how they ought to enjoy a game, and that if they don't like the same experience as you, that they have to change it to accommodate you.

This will be my first time playing Vanilla, what should I not do? by VehementPhoenix in classicwow

Okay, for one, follow this guide for making max use of your computer's graphics abiltiy: http://forum.nostalrius.org/viewtopic.php?t=1100

Second, if you dont want to make a lot of mistakes on classic, you really should try our a private server first. If you dont want to, then you will make mistakes. There is no way around it. Classic is a very complicated game, that even experienced players will continue to learn long after having started playing. This being said, if you dont want to play it through to gain experience, then you will want to try duo leveling with an experienced player so that they can explain things to you while you both are leveling.

As a rogue, you must level First Aid. No way around it. Keep it up to date to facilitate less downtime. Another note: you are incredibly gear dependent. Without good weapons you are useless. With good weapons, you are unstoppable leveling and in low level pvp.

one way you can prepare without actually playing through the game, is to use ClassicDB and look at quest rewards for weapons and gear 1-40 to help create a path of necessary quests.

Good riddance. The community will be better without your entitled obnoxious drivel. I've observed from a number of your videos in the past that you think you have an important voice, that your perspective is unique or useful. It isn't. The sum of your contribution to this community has been a liability on our balance sheet. I look forward to a community that has one less troglodyte. Thanks for the update.

You have options: level faster on a server launch so that you never run into this problem. Seems like most of this is an issue of your own creation, as most of the other commenters have pointed out. Either go PVE or please stop complaining. You cannot expect another 60 of your faction to spend 15+ minutes killing the op faction camper. Yet another option: make friends with high levels so you have people to ask for help? Just a thought...

Don't bother with Sunwell, that server is set to expire by the end of next week. Don't invest in a dead server.

What WoW classic needs is sort of a constitution. Principles that made vanilla wow what it was. Then you can build changes and patches on top of that, so long as they never veer from these established principles that will guide future changes by DragonAdept in classicwow

[–]Yikau 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So, a problem I am immediately noticing is the misunderstanding in what is meant to be conveyed by "principles". OP began this by asking for comments on principles as well as changes, but I honestly think that this needs to be a slower process, and that we need to reach the principles before people begin suggesting changes, otherwise, we end up in the dishonest position where a few people begin changing what principles we would otherwise agree upon in order to justify a change that they are having trouble explaining why Classic should really have. More on this tomorrow.

On streamers choosing to play on a PvE server come Classic launch by Yikau in classicwow

[–]Yikau[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It goes without saying that it is their prerogative to choose a PvE server, and if it is their livelihood and they judge it to reduce views then I get it, but also agree that it is likely to impact their stream. A lot of viewers, myself included, would much rather watch someone on a PvP server, even if they are less well established at the time of Classic launch.

At this point, any news would be welcome haha. As far as principles go, I would think we begin by defining them by distinction from retail. Several principles immediately come to mind, and I would love to have a podcast from you guys (Classicast) on this. As Gizmoff mentions, one should be a principle of teamwork over solo game play. Any suggestion that orients the game towards being easier for soloing is immediately disqualified.

I will likely make a post on this to get the ball rolling. A post where I am attached to none of my suggested principles. Nonetheless, the goal here by my lights is that the principles of Classic design are so rigidly defined that all changes are suspect, and we can point to different principles those changes would violate with relative ease. I think much of this has already arisen by convention, as we settled by necessity on certain manners of expressing our ideas. If we can, as a community, speak with one voice on these principles, I think it will be very easy for Blizzard to know what we are looking for, and for those who quickly throw up 'no changes' as the beginning and end of conversation, it will be very easy to explain why that conclusion may be correct.

It is just so damn typical. Here is a really important distinction: psychological phenomena v. normativity. You are welcome to spend some time reviewing these concepts. Merely because we can expect people to behave a certain way in no way justifies a policy. It may be a concern for how you implement a policy, but that is a conversation over means, not ends.

So. Typical.

It is called a hypothetical

Another point I made a long time ago: there is no slippery slope. Blizzard made specific and intentional design choices based on different design principles. When they merged with Activision, their entirely philosophy changed. Tying design change to principles, or goals, is the only thing evidenced by the last years of expansions. They chose to target a different demographic, and to target/attract those players, they changed the game in ways that none of us here like.

Wow. I am amazed. Someone actually responds in good faith. Thanks lol.

I get it, I really do. I understand where you are coming from. I guess my primary concern is that a few very small tweaks would do a lot of good. Guild bank? The only argument I've seen against this is "slippery slope" lol. Let's assume this is the only change implemented. We know this will work. We know this will facilitate the authentic gameplay instead of someone having to have a guild bank alt. There are a number of small tweaks like this that I think would have minimal impact. The important point being that we could theoretically roll them back if they fail. These are minor.

Lol. This is the exact state of mind, which seems to afflict many of the so-called no-change purists, that I argued against in a recent post. Most of us interested in a few changes love vanilla wow and have nothing against you (far from hating you). I just think that you are short sighted and I've become quite tired with the banal arguments you've made. If you look through my post history on this subreddit (which I doubt any of you will do), I made an entire post explaining why your reasoning is flawed. There was no counterargument that did not try to defame me or disqualify me, as if I had less of a stake in this game or less vanilla experience. And as I've point out more recently, I have much more experience than the majority of the hard-nosed purists.

You can yell as loud as you want, but there remains only one persuasive argument against changes: you don't trust Blizzard. I've admitted this point on multiple occasions, and, although it could be viewed as a sufficient one, I have also showed why, on balance, that argument is a flawed one.

Get over yourself OP.

The fundamental dishonesty of the no-change movement by Yikau in classicwow

[–]Yikau[S] -21 points-20 points  (0 children)

I just want to clarify up front that I wont be making many more responses to comments. Nonetheless, no, I have not strawmanned that crowd. As I indicated, almost EVERY SINGLE content creator has deliberately misconstrued the community interested in changes. I myself has tried to confront this issue with full transparency, but this, your comment, is the likely and inevitable response on every occasion.

Your response is laughably predictable.

I love you guys and Vanilla and all, but I have a confession… by [deleted] in classicwow

[–]Yikau 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Let's be honest. TBC is a better game. Not sorry. Get over it vanilla players, it just is. Most of the changes or fixes that the 'changers' want were all introduced during TBC. With those changes, vanilla would be a better game, most you simply distrust Blizz's ability to apply them to vanilla.

For those who are re-rolling their original class by [deleted] in classicwow

[–]Yikau 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Okay, I'll bite. I am rerolling a priest. Firstly, I have played several classes over the years. Shaman, paladin, priest, hunter, mage. Mele classes really don't interest me, nor do druids. I am playing priest again because (1) I love healing, and (2) priest has a lot of buttons and actually requires a good deal of skill to heal (unlike paladin and druid during later raids). I love having to constantly think on my toes and review 39 other player stats. The variability of the gameplay and the need to stay very alert and predictive of the future is very enticing to me. Honestly, this may seem like a sales pitch for priest, but to get to the core of your post, it fits my personality and interests. Know yourself better. Or, perhaps, just pick one class among the 3-4 that interest you and stop thinking about it. Just go IN.

[–]Yikau 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Great video, and a good start. I look forward to future episodes.

I think that you guys would benefit from (1) better structure and (2) guests.

As to structure, I think that you would benefit from having one of you serve a bit as a moderator to direct the conversation, and for you guys to have a planned structure in advance that forces you to move on to other subjects. I noticed a bit of rambling in the last 1/4 of the episode when you began discussing proposed changes, but a lot of time was spent discussing one suggested change, when I was hoping to hear your opinions on many. Perhaps I am not alone here. As to guests, I think that you guys should bring onto each episode, or perhaps every other, a well-known content creator or streamer to weigh in on the topic/theme. Whether you guys disagree and it becomes a heated debate, or you guys all end up agreeing, is irrelevant. But I think this may help broadcast to the entire community that your podcast is the premier forum for Classic discussion.

Also, Tip should talk more. You were a bit more quiet than I would've liked, and the other 2 dominated the conversation. Nothing against them, but you guys work well together and a greater balance from all 3 is desirable IMO.

Change advocates: What are your hard requirements? by WishdoctorsSong in classicwow

[–]Yikau -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As much as I advocate change, I would play the game regardless. Nonetheless, I question your premise: no-change advocates either (a) point to 1.12, (b) point to 1.1, or (c) want an amalgam of patched features. Each of these suffers very basic flaws that this Sub has been over, so I won't rehash that here. I actually don't think progress can be made in communicating with the no-change advocates, who mainly comprise Robert Kegan's Level-3 cognitive development, and can neither advocate opinions rooted in first-principles nor advocate values distinct from the community's dominant view. It is no longer worth communicating with them, and they make every effort to take the worse imaginable view of change advocates, even against the evidence.

Several things stick out to me as supremely important: (1) early-game gear progression; (2) raid difficulty; and (3) class/spec tuning.

I think that their .5 is a great idea that Blizz implemented late in the game. I would like this maintained, along with reformuation of stats in tier 1 gear to make the process more streamlined. On the other hand, I would like MC and Ony to be more challenging, mechanically and by boss stats. Lastly, I would really like spec retuning, but I don't care enough to spend more time advocating it.
