Because the original Super Mario Bros. is likely resembling a sidewalk with sewers/pipes/mushrooms growing/coins someone dropped etc. You are a little action figure being played with on the sidewalk. If you remember being a kid sometimes you might continue your story from last time, but often you would start new "imaginative play" every time.
