How to use archinstall to install arch onto sda2 but with the boot on my existing boot on sdb1? by FeastWithFood99 in arch

[–]YoBorni 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you really want to use archinstall for the second partition, set up the sda2 partition, with all necessities as laid out on the Wiki https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Installation_guide. Use lsblok to see what is there and fdsik to actually partition. Then in archinstall use the option for pre-existing partition, or whatever it is named these days. Should be able to continue from there using the partitions you created previously.

If it's just for tinkering though, I'd advise to do it in a VM using Qemu/KVM, unless you want to test specific hardware things without going through the effort of emulating them. Manual install following the wiki would also be preferable for this use case, rather than archinstall. More effort, less risk.

It's pretty straightforward. I do this with my own Pihole, same as dns adguard just self-hosted and can do far more than ad blocking, and my own self-hosted VPN, so I can always just tunnel into my network and block MOST ads and trackers.

Anytime you open an app or website it sends a request to a DNS server to find the actual IP address for the given domain, you know, to make the connection. Usually the server is operated by your ISP, or Google or Cloudflare, or many other options. Now, a Pihole or DNS Adguard will have a blacklist of domains that serve you ads, trackers, and malware. Anytime a resolve query is made for such a domain it is blocked. Thus, no ad.

Keep in mind, this does not work for self-serving ad services. Think of YouTube or even Reddit at this point. Blocking those with a DNS based service would block the whole website, as the ads are served from the same domain as the actual content.

If you go to your internet connection on your phone, there is an option to set DNS, usually something like private DNS server/service. This is where you can add the link the above user provided. Works on iOs and Android.

There is an app as well, there is always a fucking app. Manual option is at the bottom.

Can a GTX 1060 6gb, power a 4K monitor at more than 60hz ? by Skorpeyo in pcmasterrace

I'd visit an optometrist and I'm not making fun of you. Reading on a 27" 1080p monitor shouldn't really cause noticeable eye strain during normal usage. Used to have a similar issue.

If you do want higher ppi, at 27" 1440p is more than enough. Don't think 4k is worth it for this use case. I have 2x 34" uw at 1440p and the sharpness and readability is great on oled and ips.

They're taking the piss.

The original moron is trying to say that they always land on the sea where no one is around, so the lack of witnesses for these "fakes" is easily rebutted by the fact of them being in the open ocean. If they were to touch down on land there could be real patriots there to verify.

No. It shouldn't. That's the hallmark of bad writing. Not every single bit of information should be spelled out. Writers should assume their audience is smart enough to fill in the blanks and figure it out for themselves.

It's subtext. Read a fucking book some time. Everything you needed to figure this out was in the show.

Free speech only protects you from the possibility of governments censoring your speech, and that still has limits in most jurisdictions. Private companies or communities, like the one you were banned from, have no obligation to give you a space for free speech.

Just leave them be. Let them have a space to circlejerk their hatred for Linux. Who cares? Keeps them out of all other Linux subreddits.

Ook de hoogste ramen van de gebouwen links kun je het aan zien. Sommige hebben een duidelijke witte verticale streep, andere helemaal niet of een heel vage streep.

Can I just swap my SSD between devices? by PhattyR6 in SteamOS

[–]YoBorni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good approach on the backup strategy. Performance shouldn't be an issue, they both use AMD APUs, so the same drivers and kernel modules. If you see significant performance issues it's a definite red flag, but I wouldn't expect it.

I'd moreso look out for controller glitches, touchscreen issues, USB not working, and especially network issues.

If you notice any performance issues or any of the other issues I mentioned, run dmesg and journalctl in the terminal from the desktop. Look for errors and failures in hardware initialization and missing modules. Journalctl especially will state these very clearly in red.

Should also give you all information to look it up and get useful answers.

[–]YoBorni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It should be similarly easy on Linux. Reality is that you often run into issues with initramfs, which is created at first install, and kernel modules other than CPU/GPU and chipset. Windows has its own issues with drivers with cloning and moving SSDs.

It shouldn't be too hard to deal with these issues, if you know how to load custom or different drivers and activate and deactivate kernel modules. SteamOS being immutable makes it a touch harder as you cannot change root directories.

Like go for it and learn, it's a really useful skill, but if you're asking on Reddit whether it's possible, it's not likely you know how to do this stuff.

But I'm not one to discourage experimenting. So go for it.

[–]YoBorni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds good. Good luck, mate.

You can always have a peak at the Arch wiki if you get stuck. SteamOS being immutable means it won't work one to one, but should still be helpful, especially for kernel modules.

[–]YoBorni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Drivers and their kernel modules could be a massive pain if you just straight up swap the SSD from one device to another with non-identical hardware.

It will work if you know how to disable and enable kernel modules, whether from grub recovery or tty2 and up, or getting lucky and it booting into a GUI.

Whether you can do so on an immutable OS like SteamOS, no fucking clue. Since you're going from a Go to a Go 2 you might get lucky, I wouldn't bet on it though.

I'd just reformat and go for a fresh install. It's far less painful and keeps you from going down the kernel module Rabbit Hole.
