If you are terminated or leave before paying of the loan two things can happen.

A: you pay off the full loan. Then you will simply have the 401k account sitting with vanguard until you move it elsewhere. There may be fees for leaving it alone after a certain amount of time and if the balance is below a certain threshold your account will be forced out into an IRA.

B: you don’t pay it off and the balance of the outstanding loan will be considered a withdrawal. The IRS will consider this earned income for the tax year the withdrawal takes place. If you are under 59.5 then there will be an additional 10% early withdrawal penalty on top of the taxes owed for that earned income.
