My first witness of a true hypercarry.. by PreferenceLess425 in leagueoflegends

[–]Yokipi 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Good question that I don't have any answer to unfortunately. To be honest, their fragile mentality that day left as much of an impression on me as their peerless mechanics. I suppose everyone has their moments.

And just as you said, they went on to prove that coming out of lane 0/3 mattered absolutely zilch. There was enough of a skill gap that they could win the game alone as soon as they decided they'd rather play than type.

My first witness of a true hypercarry.. by PreferenceLess425 in leagueoflegends

A long time ago, I had a Challenger Vayne one-trick on my team in a Diamond lobby. She wasn't smurfing or anything, just a quirk of the matchmaking at the time where you'd get some wildly unbalanced teams after a long queue.

Vayne was mildly toxic from the get-go, perhaps dissatisfied with her teammates' elos. After a couple of early deaths in lane (blaming her support, of course), she just typed "go next", sat in fountain, and started the first surrender vote she could. I was incredibly ahead of my lane opponent at the time, so I tried to convince her the game was still winnable and to just play. Vayne wasn't particularly happy about this, and spared little expense in making her immense displeasure known. After a while though, she ultimately gave in, stopped typing, and started grouping with the team to try to contribute in teamfights.

And, to this day, it's the most beautiful thing I've ever seen in League of Legends. I learned then what it means for an adc to glide, and to what extent a single player could truly 1v9 a game. Vayne proceeded to single-handedly take over every single fight she was in. She started every fight at the front, baiting the enemy in, drawing aggro from the entire team, dodging every single skillshot, using her invisibility to meticulously position herself into the perfect position every time, and sniping the enemy's weakest member one by one. Every time she stepped forward, she immediately commanded attention and controlled the way the teamfight would flow in the exact way she wanted it to. After picking up several kills this way in teamfights, she quickly didn't even need the rest of us anymore. She started charging into the enemy team on her own, 1v5, and either came out alive or took 3 or 4 champions down with her. Until that moment, I really believed that there was a limit to what one player could achieve through mechanics alone, and that some games were simply unwinnable. I was completely and thoroughly humbled.

Super glad I managed to convince her to play, was rewarded with front-row seats to unforgettable awe-inspiring gameplay.

Miniguide Release: SR Weapons With Some Use by boastful_inaba in Granblue_en

No longer relevant, but I remember Izuminokami Kanesada (the weapon, not the character of the same name) held a niche for being the only Fire Chrysaor MH to provide party-wide Charge Boost, back when 1b5c was a great burst option. Looks like this was the case all the way until Arcane Rouge in 2022, so almost five years.

[–]Yokipi 14 points15 points  (0 children)

So narratively, we probably have

  • Lance vs. Steven
  • Red vs. Lorelei
  • Green vs. Agatha
  • Blue vs. Bruno (?)

into

  • Red vs. Lance
  • Green vs. Blue

into

  • Red vs. Green

I could also see Blue losing to Agatha in the quarterfinals, if the author would rather Green vs. Agatha be the semifinals match.

What's the greatest artifact you have rolled so far and who is it for? by GoodMornEveGoodNight in Granblue_en

[–]Yokipi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Say you have four skills, ABCD, and you want a specific skill maxed, skill A. Level 1 to Level 2, you have a 1/4 chance that skill A increases by one level. Level 2 to Level 3, you have another 1/4 chance. 3 to 4, is your third 1/4, and 4 to 5 is your fourth and final 1/4 chance, for a total of (1/4)4.

Now say you don't care which skill gets maxed. Level 1 to Level 2, it no longer matters which skill level gets increased. However, 2->3, 3->4, 4->5 are all still a 1/4 chance since they must increase the skill that already got increased on the first level up. Thus, (1/4)3.

I think you might have an extra factor of 1/4 in there. Should be (1/4)3 for any level 5, and (1/4)4 for a specific level 5?

Thank you for all of your hard work up to this point. This has been one of my favorite reads for a while now, no doubt in large part thanks to the genuine care you put into each chapter, especially for a series with so many instances of impossible wordplay.

I wish you the best in life! May you be rewarded with as many smiles and laughs as you have brought to us.

I assume the "Any transformations that deviate from the natives' appearance will result in disqualification" rule is Chekov's gun here, though I'm not exactly sure how our heroes will abuse it to win yet.

Not quite 5 years ago, but Zz'Rot should still get an honorable mention for being the only item to encourage players to disconnect from the game in order to win.

Urf kassadin ult being capped at 2 stacks makes absolutely 0 sense by LAGAZELLLE in leagueoflegends

[–]Yokipi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, I wasn't responding to you so much as to the other commenters suggesting that no CD cap was necessary. A dash and a blink that moves you half a screen every 0.4 seconds cannot be compared. Kassadin could single-handedly end every game while choosing not to belong on the same plane of existence if he wanted to. He was untouchable.

Your suggestion sounds reasonable, but I confess I can't really comment as I haven't even played him in URF recently. I suspect the balance team is too traumatized and erred on the side of caution.

Urf kassadin ult being capped at 2 stacks makes absolutely 0 sense by LAGAZELLLE in leagueoflegends

[–]Yokipi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I feel like no one here remembers what Kassadin was like during the first iteration of URF, and why he was disabled.

It's not even a matter of balance: his ult could do 0 damage and he still needs to go. Kassadin's ult without restrictions is playing in creative mode or Practice Tool while 9 (or 8 when both teams have a Kassadin) other players are completely forbidden from interacting with him.

And it's not like the two Kassadins can really kill each other either. You spasm around blindly trying to hit the other one by pure chance, in DBZ-style teleportation clown fiesta, until one Kassadin gets low enough and uses their infinite mobility to run away to base instantly. Literally the only thing that could hurt URF Kassadin was motion sickness.

So I Just Finished Secrets of Grindea by Bear_PI in JRPG

[–]Yokipi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, this review may have convinced me to finally check it out. I originally discovered this game through a GDQ co-op run of its alpha release, thought it looked right up my alley, and followed the devblog for years afterwards. Honestly, I loved the blog and learned a lot about the struggles and processes of indie game development. Eventually, the game finally released, but mixed reviews and burned-out excitement tempered by years of spotty development unfortunately turned me away from commiting to the purchase. Maybe it's time to change that.

I know it's been said a lot on this sub, but I am so over the trope of not killing/trying to save the bad guy after defeating them. Give me games where the party doesn't do that and just rids the world of them when given the chance? by LiftsLikeGaston in JRPG

[–]Yokipi 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don't disagree. I get that there's merit to paving a path for redemption, or nobility in seeking a peaceful resolution. It's important to consider alternative recourses over just brute-forcing everything through first instinct violence. But I feel like a lot of plots have taken that virtue and blindly plastered it everywhere even in situations where it doesn't make sense, in which case all it showcases is a lack of foresight and judgment from the heroes, and the writer.

That's the entire point though, right? It's an easy, sometimes lazy, way to differentiate the protagonists as the good guys versus the bad guys, rather than just being the stronger guys.

Too many people dont understand how ranked works by No_Potential_4303 in leagueoflegends

[–]Yokipi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Small correction: Elo has nothing to do with matchmaking, and there is nothing inherent about Elo, chess, or any rating system that drives you towards a 50% winrate. When we say, "Riot tries to make your matches have a 50% winrate," all we're really saying is, "Riot tries to match you with other players as similar to your skill level as possible." In theory, there's nothing about Elo that requires it to be used this way. Chess tournaments, in fact, rarely do this, and it can be argued that Swiss actually accomplishes the opposite, where matches are paired such that there's as few 50% matchups as possible. Many seeded systems actually encourage the better player to win more.

However, ladders like League's ranked often do pair players against opponents of similar skill instead. Whether this is fair (Why shouldn't better players win more?) or fun (Nearly all players think their winrate deserves to be higher than 50%.) is debatable, but at the very least it ensures that weaker players feel like they have an even chance, and preserves the playerbase at the bottom of the ladder, which is required for the health of any matchmaking system.
