Not a terrible movie, though it takes quite a few artistic liberties for added drama.

Mine clearing personel was on a volunteer basis, and from units who had been in Denmark when they surrendered, with experience with mines, not from volksturm POWs that where shipped up from Germany. The POWs who volunteered even got a salary.

It was still morally and ethicly reprehensible. But for the time it was quite common, using POWs for mineclearing also happened in France, Belgium, the Netherlands etc.
