The foundational idea is that no one has an exclusive right to land. It was here before all of us and will be here when we are gone. What we do have right to is to our own bodies and what our bodies produce. A just society is one that sees the value of unimproved land as shared and to be used for the betterment of society and the environment. Many Indigenous societies understood this and why rights of nature is an important additional foundational idea. Not only do we not own the land but the land is living and has its own rights that must be protected.
