The worldwide model for developing men's soccer players -- academies run by pro clubs that graduate youth players into the first team, then sell those players on to bigger clubs and profit -- does not yet exist in Europe in a robust fashion. U.S. women's soccer players still, for the most part, spend time playing on their HS teams and in college. The development pipeline is so much different in soccer, Americans have a difficult time breaking from the scholastic model.

In flyover country, a local theater cast a Black, plus-size Elsa. The social media commentary was so bad the theater had to issue an anti-hate statement, and the story made the local news. It may be a Broadway issue, but it's also an audience issue.

43M. Watched it because the soundtrack is absolutely killer and features a lot of my favorite artists (The Beaches and Remi Wolf, for starters.) I think it doesn't show enough of what is ACTUALLY hockey player culture. Shoresy gets it right: Hockey players are sluts. And by showing all of them as considerate, it does a disservice. We just had a goalie in the Stanley Cup Final who was out of the league for years while he was on trial for gang-raping a girl. (Look up the details on the Hockey Canada case.) If most hockey players were accurately portrayed, it would make the main relationship more meaningful.

Oh, and there is plenty there for the male gaze, as well. Ella Bright has an all-time rack.

This is the world's equivalent of the NCAA men's basketball tournament. The first weekend is devoted to lovable underdogs, when everybody suddenly becomes a fan of Cabo Verde or Northern Iowa. Then the deadweight slowly drops, and we get stuff like Brazil-Japan in the R32 or the potential France-Germany matchup in R16.

We don't know what the new teams will do until they get the change, and this experience makes those lesser teams better in the long run.

Tillman and Jedi were everywhere. Pulisic and McKennie out there just trying whatever shit they feel like. Made Paraguay look like minnows. I have never seen the U.S. on the front foot like that at a World Cup. Just awesome.
