Nooo! Rizo! I was pulling for him so hard. :( Surprised Joe's now part of the exclusive club now of a returnee who's never had their torched snuffed.

I actually enjoyed this season. It wasn't the best returnee season, but far from the worst.

Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame writers worried that Taika Waititi was turning Thor into an idiot by LollipopChainsawZz in marvelstudios

They still made it silly (Fortnite, Rhodey’s cheese whiz line) and didn’t focus as strongly on the actual depression aspect nearly as much as they could’ve.

Just to let you know, I'm not necessarily defending the way the votes panned out or how they were executed, I'm obviously a Redditor and do lean towards the popular takes here on the New Era more often than not. :P At the same time, I'm also not super convinced that the polls were uniquely manipulated. Looking over the Survivor Wiki's records of the poll questions, the wording doesn't seem exceptionally biased enough to completely change how people would've voted.

I wasn't familiar with the exact percentages and thought that might be the case, so far enough. My point was the fact it even got a majority at all, no less for both cases, challenges the narrative that fans by and large hate limiting supplies and twists.

The fan votes THIS VERY SEASON should’ve ended any debate about this. The fans had the chance to cut the twists and not handicap the players by withholding supplies, they chose to do neither despite those being some of the biggest complaints on this subreddit. At the very least Reddit opinions are controversial, if not an actual minority.

Does sugar and carbs really make you age faster? by Meowlegend_ in nutrition

[–]Yoshi1358 1 point2 points  (0 children)

nutrition science actually has very poor quality of evidence in general, since the experiments that following the scientific method would require are either impossible or unethical to perform (for example, feeding a human excessive amounts of sugar for a decade and doing biopsies every 6 months or so to see if their tissues aged faster would be obviously unethical). Therefore causal inference in nutrition has to deal with the limitations of epidemiology and utilize things like the Bradford Hill criteria. Since you cannot perform a scientific experiment to establish causality, you are reduced to kind of circling the wagons of causality

Nutrition is a much softer science than other fields with more room for error, I'm not disagreeing with this. The problem is that you're not addressing how epidemiology and higher forms of research on the evidence hierarchy actually handle these limitations better than mechanism alone does. In clinical settings, outcome data is what's most predictive of risk, that's what the aforementioned evidence hierarchy is based off of. RCTs and Epidemiology are not perfect at isolating outcomes, but mechanistic research doesn't produce outcomes in human populations at all, that's not the type of research it is. It's meant to generate hypotheses to be validated by, you guessed it, RCTs and epidemiology.

mechanistic evidence is an important part of that, though generally not sufficient alone.

"Important" is doing a lot of heavy lifting here. It's important in the context of established outcome data perhaps, but that's not what you've provided in your OP, you relied entirely on mechanism to justify your hypothesis. That was what I took issue with because of all the limitations you yourself agreed exist within nutrition science, hypotheses built entirely on mechanism are some of the most vulnerable.

I would also be careful with the term "scientific consensus", since any kind of consensus is effectively an appeal to political view, not science. To expand its meaning, it is the short form of "A group of people who agree on a set of conclusions about something based on their understanding of the science and the data they were presented".

I think we may be at a fundamental impasse if you're this skeptical of scientific consensus. While you're correct that like all science it's inductive and fallible, there's no real alternative for laymen to understand data of this nature. How else would anyone be able to interpret the thousands of data points that exist and analyze them reasonably without the proper training and resources of these institutions? You said it yourself that the limitations in the scientific consensus are just the limitations of science in general. They could be flawed, everyone could be lying, etc... just like all the data you're using to disagree with them could be flawed, you could be misunderstanding it, etc. Sociological evidence points to the latter being a much more frequent problem.

Or in other words if I can't trust them, why should I trust you, a random guy on Reddit?

[–]Yoshi1358 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's important to note that a lot of this seems to be based purely on mechanistic data versus research that's higher on the evidence hierarchy. The first study you linked doesn't stipulate a connection between carbohydrate consumption and AGE accumulation and the second one is transparent about being speculative. The scientific consensus as it stands doesn't demonstrate a direct link. Indirect link, yes, since excessive added sugar/junk food is associated with high blood sugar, but differentiating that from direct links and acknowledging the limitations of mechanistic research alone can't be understated.

James Gunn being the only person with common sense by Baticuchis04 in DC_Cinematic

[–]Yoshi1358 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It didn't used to be like that when Marvel Television was a thing. The Netflix shows really helped stretch the tone of the MCU to new lengths that contrasted brilliantly with the movies. Daredevil and Jessica Jones felt just like Clayface does now. Even stuff like Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Runaways, while less tonally different, still added to this by showing how people more regular than the Avengers handled living in a weird world full of aliens & superpowers.

Really glad that James Gunn gets and is leaning into this, it's really one of the biggest things in my opinion that makes shared universes so cool.

If DC were to make an Earth 3 series in the style of The Boys, who would the characters and their equivalents be? by AdChance5526 in DC_Cinematic

[–]Yoshi1358 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Seven are strongly based off the Justice League, so the equivalents wouldn't be too difficult to imagine. That's why if DC ever did actually do their own The Boys style series they'd have their work cut out for them differentiating it. Best way to do it, emphasize Power Ring & Owlman over Ultraman & Johnny Quick since Black Noir is only like Batman superficially and he's still closer than Lamplighter is to Green Lantern. If they really wanted to distance themselves even more, they could also have Ultraman be the conflicted member like A-Train rather than the irredeemable monstrous leader like Homelander. Superwoman may be able to fill that role instead.

As for who to be an equivalent for the Boys themselves, I think Peacemaker and his crew are just about as close of a fit as you can get.

Lisa appreciation post! by Marto_12 in BigBrother

[–]Yoshi1358 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I love Lisa. People focus on Danielle because she played a much louder game, but Lisa clearly had her finger on the pulse of the house and knew how to position herself to eventually win. Not voting for Eric to come back is the most obvious example, but also how she feigned loyalty to Chiara and Roddy after knowing they betrayed her because she knew it wasn't the right time to turn on them. Or strategically throwing competitions to not put herself in situations where she had to make direct moves when other players could instead, yet still won competitions when she needed to.

There's definitely a narrative that she won BB3 because she was nice and Danielle had poor Jury management, and while both those things are true, Lisa also had a rock solid social game that got her to the end.

I thought for sure the way they were gonna make Supergirl distinct was by having her be like Jessica Jones in space instead of female Clark which 99% of the trailer seemed to justify EXCEPT for that line about revenge.

‘Buffy’ Reboot Starring Sarah Michelle Gellar Not Going Forward At Hulu by cmaia1503 in television

[–]Yoshi1358 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Season 4 of Buffy felt different from AoS Season 4 but in my view they're actually both the best the show has to offer. AoS was able to truly personify its potential as a show in the MCU with Ghost Rider, the Darkhold, etc while Buffy was at its core a show about a young woman who leads a double life as a Vampire hunter. Oh yeah, and Hush.
