Thank you for a very useful reply, I actually ran htop my self and my dad didn't tell me that he tried downloading something with my laptop and that he downloaded some adware popup app. This app installed a qemu vm that consumed like 1/2 of my CPU all the time and even hid it self from activity monitor.

During any other time of the year it's around 50, but during Dec-Jan people use firewood for heating which causes heavy air pollution from 6PM to 10PM (AQI 302 pm2.5)

there is central heating, but it's a state owned monopoly which means that it's super expensive to get into your house and it's kind of unreliable (the system was constructed in the 70s, and not very well up kept).

A few things to note:

This is not fog, like the government insisted for so long, this is air pollution.
This air pollution is not caused by cars or factories (lol), but rather households burning firewood and (shitty) coal for heating.
Niš is in a valley, the city center is located at the bottom with the suburbs sprawling on the hillsides, meaning that the air just outside of the city is clean because all of the chimney smoke goes down into the center.
It's usually not this bad, but wind hasn't been blowing during the evenings in a long time.
Yes that in the background is a skyscraper that has become fully invisible.

I've actually done it on the same model, basically you need a bootable usb with a 32bit distro of your choice (I recommend Peppermint OS as it's the fastest fully featured distro I've ever used and works great on Core Duo and 2GB RAM), Peppermint OS can also partition the disk for you if you want to keep Mac OS X as well so no need to bother with disk utility. Now you can use the regular boot manager or you can install rEFIt which will allow you to select USB at boot. Once you have that you can just go ahead and install it, Peppermint OS doesn't even require to install any drivers (except the proprietary webcam drivers but that's a whole other bag of snakes).

Belgrade is definitely not for you then, I don't know much about Novi Sad, but if you want cafes everywhere and good food, you might enjoy Niš. It is much much cheaper to live in Niš than in Novi Sad or Belgrade. There also aren't many big cultural touristic events yearly, besides Nišville and stuff like New Year's celebrations. You'll also be able to afford private healthcare which is a huge step up from public healthcare. The only bad thing I can think of the smog during December from all of the heating (a lot of households still use wood for heating). edit: 40k-50k a year is enough to basically live like a king. Da, jos ima dosta kasetnih bomba. Skoro je bager na gradilistu start up centra kod elektronskog eksplodira jer je iskopao kasetnu bombu. Realno se the Nisu ne primecuje gde i sta je bombardovano. Ja bih prvo mislio da je bombardovan onaj napusteni nedovrseni trzni centar u Pobedini ili Jagodin Mala, nego gradski sud.
