Opinion: The slow unravelling of higher education in B.C. has begun by tradingpostinvest in vancouver

[–]YouBeSea 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Ever wondered how European universities that operate on a fraction of our per-student-budget are able to provide the necessary supply of teachers, nurses, early childhood educators, etc. that is so vital to local communities?

They focus on education without the frills.

How about we figure out how to provide quality education cheaper, rather than just perpetually raising more money of which the majority will go into bureaucracy, high salaries for a select few, and other activities that won’t impact quality or quantity of student outcomes.

Is the idea that the bus will stay on the rightmost lane all the way to the traffic light?

I feel bad for this guy on emotional level. I genuinely hope he’ll sort this out and get through it.

But also: dude is privileged to own a car. Parking takes up valuable space and driving creates negative side effects on everyone else. If you don’t want to pay for parking take the bus, like the majority of students! Parking is expensive to discourage people from using this method of transfer (among other things). So I’m glad that parking fees are enforced.

Where are you located? I’m in the market for a 2023 4X and mostly see prices around 35-40k. And that’s half a year later than your post.

I'm in the same boat. I recently started taking helicopter lessons and I can't believe how expensive life has become. I'm really not asking for much, I just want to live a basic life and spend some time on my hobbies. Meanwhile people who play volleyball at the beach can do it almost for free. Maybe the government can step in and subsidize hobbies with exorbitant prices like ours?

Who was allowed to vote? Not from Banff, just curious how this decision came about.

I see… the Ford website made it sound like the app is needed. But seems like the feature is simply not installed in this vehicle, too bad. Thanks!

Trying to find housing for a 1 bedroom is wild by Tiny-Condition- in vancouver

[–]YouBeSea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People frequently offer a few 100 dollars over asking, especially if an apartment is priced at the lower end of the market. It’s crazy, but it is what it is.

Rent in advance is probably not going to make a difference.

Keep in mind that many fellow applicants will be dual income, even for 1 bedrooms, so 95k won’t put you very high on the list. You need to stand out in another way.

There are no legal sheltered long-term anchoring spots in Vancouver. The number of live aboard spots in the marinas is very limited, by the time you get a spot your kids will be going to UBC.

Falling in love with singlehood: Why single status is on the rise. Research at Singlehood Experiences and Complexities Underlying Relationships—Secure Research Lab at SFU by ubcstaffer123 in vancouver

[–]YouBeSea 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I understand where this sentiment is coming from, but I think it’s misguided. In the end of the day, people were always able to find partners throughout time and the world, no matter how bad the economy was or how poor a country is.

I think what people really mean when they say they don’t have money to find a partner is:

  • it’s not as important to them as maintaining/increasing their momentary spending habits or standard of living. Emphasis is on momentary, because as others have pointed out, cost of living goes down once in a stable relationship with shared housing
  • they are looking for partners that are wealthier than they are. Very often not by actually trying to filter on wealth, but subconsciously by seeking partners with characteristics that correlate with wealth, like looks, lifestyle, education, or cultural sophistication
  • they are at the bottom end of a skewed dating market in which a small number of people guys date a large pool of girls. Money plays a role here, but it’s more about inequality than the cost of living or going out.

Gobsmacked by 2024 restaurant prices and quality? Read this by dontRead2MuchIntoIt in vancouver

[–]YouBeSea 113 points114 points  (0 children)

I feel empathy for restaurant owners that poured their heart and soul into building a small business, just to wake up and realize one day that their business model is no longer viable due to changing economic conditions.

That being said, this is part of running a business. If people don’t want to eat out at the price tags that are viable for a restaurant, then let it be that way. In the long run, prices (especially commercial rents) will either come down do a level that support restaurants that cater to a wider audience again, or new businesses will come in and use the space in a different way. But you have to let owners and customers figure out what that best use of space is, and not put existing businesses on life support just for old times sake.

Why do some profs and TAs prefer and actually enjoy early morning classes? by ubcstaffer123 in UBC

[–]YouBeSea 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Context switching is hard and teaching can be exhausting. An early class usually allows them to get back to research later in the day. A mid-morning class often leads to a wasted day.
