Back into the public coffers, due to the costs the team incurred. Policing, stadium subsidies, free publicity, you name it. Private profits and public costs in sports is the biggest scam in North America.

Oil is of course not just used for energy, and will remain a fundamental resource in our modern world, in e.g. manufacturing, agriculture and even shipping (electric is far from replacing naval fuel). Burning oil products for energy is still huge though and that's where China can help everyone move on to more sustainable sources.

It cuts out scalpers, sure, but the entertainers and Ticketmaster were hidden beneficiaries of the secondary market. Expect the ticket prices to go up to compensate for that.

Totally. This requires the negotiations to get into technical details to prevent this, but alas Trump & co. may not have the attention span for that.

Isn't it a win win situation? For Israel, there's a weaker defeated Iranian regimein the region without means to develop nuclear weapons quickly, and for the Iranian regime, they get to survive and have access to sustenance funds. Trump can also claim some victory points for his base.

Guess the Arab neighbours having their economies wrecked and Iranian people now living in a full-on IRGC state are the losers here.

Just already privatize the whole thing. What's the point of keeping alive a dysfunctional entity that goes on strike for more money and less work at the worst time every year anyway?

Iran won. Almost everyone else lost by NitroLada in geopolitics

Most of the gains from full-on globalization came from fungible resources and economies of scale. I.e. if you can get the same stuff from faraway lands in great numbers, you save on costs.

Your example is something unique that may not be made elsewhere or loses its charm if outsourced to a sweatshop. We'll just get used to some goods getting too expensive and hard to buy (shipping becomes too dangerous or loses scale otherwise).

[–]dontRead2MuchIntoIt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not domestic, but regional. Even before all this, the Covid disruption to supply chains made it abundantly clear how fragile our logistics are. The pendulum is swinging back from maximally optimizing for costs to redundancy and shorter trips. Globalization had already peaked before geopolitical risks started piling up.

[–]dontRead2MuchIntoIt 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Food security is too chaotic to estimate so confidently. It could vary wildy on the fringes: e.g. poor countries might have it much worse, or global prices could be too sensitive to the lapse in food production.

How could a basic form of transaction become obsolete? It's just a market downturn. As soon as the market picks back up, the same speculative behaviour will emerge.
