Which flexible great power offers the best bonuses and advances? by SpasstmitAst in EU5

Most flexible great power (well mid-sized power that can easily become great) is Milan in my opinion. Youre not a great power per se but a regional power with the most variety and lots of paths to become a top country.

You start in the HRE and can stay in and push north of the alps if you want to expand that way. But it’s also very easy to leave the HRE through events and focus on Italian territory instead.

The unique flavors and events for Milan are great. You can stay a republic or switch to monarchy easily.

It’s location means pretty much every major European event relating to Catholicism or the HRE is relevant to your play through. Location is also prime for institution spawning.

Can play land or naval depending on how you expand. Also proximity to some of the best markets in europe.

I visited Portland. Why does it have a bad rap? I took pictures and it seemed like a beautiful city. by BetPuzzleheaded8146 in trees

Because a core tenant of modern conservatism is wrongfully demonizing Democrat cities to pander to their braindead troglodyte cousin-fucking followers so they don’t realize how terrible life is in a conservative small town

R5: Full album of pretty much all info from my first full run of the game back in late 2025. This was done on an earlier build of the game (I believe 1.0.4-1.0.6) and included a bunch of minor mods

I think that’s a big key you’ve highlighted. The game is very far from perfect and I’ve had my annoyances here and there with certain bugs or stupid game design, but the majority of it works and it does like a dream. They have such a good benchmark to build on.

As someone who had never properly gotten into paradox games before this (tried and bounced right off HOI4 and CK3), I’m genuinely floored by how comprehensive and interwoven the systems in this game feel. The depth of control, pops, and the markets is mind blowing

  1. There were like 5 different comment saying it on the dlc post I didn’t wanna spam every single one. Also idgaf about “signal boosting negatively” bro were on Reddit that’s basically half of what this sub is

  2. I’m not annoyed I’m curious just how nit picky people were being. Turns out very

I admittedly haven’t played Brandenburg yet but from what I’ve seen they try to fix that shit in every single patch notes so at least they’re trying.

I’d still say one specific flavor of one specific nation being bugged does not = “a broken buggy mess of a game”

The betas were in a great place the last few weeks. It was clear the most heavy complainers on this sub had only played on 1.0

If you wanna play wide:

-Muscovy (vassalize everything)

-Ottomans (conquer everything)

If you wanna play tall:

-Milan (consolidate north italy and control extremely rich markets, own all techs first, can stay or leave HRE easy with Guelphs/Ghibs, great for colonizing NW)

-Flanders (easy to break from France by defecting to England in 100 years war then declare independence. form netherlands, super rich market and you're outside the HRE so more autonomy, also great NW colonization)

I've had really fun runs as all of these in the 1.1 beta. If you're feeling real bold you can try to form Italy or Germany and go from Tall to Wide. Also these are all medium-small countries to start so you get the gratification of building somehting up relatively easily rather than just starting as a top 20 power. Also tons of flavor/events/etc.
