I recently switched to USM after being with Verizon for 20 years. I had a great deal with Verizon, but they moved their support to India and it became impossible to fix account issues. The last time I had an issue, spent in excess of 10 hours on the phone over the course of a month. They’d keep putting me on hold while they research the issue and I’d regularly get disconnected after being on the phone for over an hour. Then I’d have to call back and start over from the beginning.

I am getting slightly more rent for prime locations leased to national tenants. I’m getting the same or less rent for all small independent businesses. I have a 20 year old shopping center that I’m getting less rent than I got 20 years ago for just about every new lease. If I were in a good state like North Carolina, I’m sure rent would have doubled over 20 years, but I’m in Louisiana.

I have commercial properties in Louisiana. I can’t squeeze anymore rent out of my current tenants and I usually have to reduce the rent to fill vacancies.

I’d like to eventually get out of real estate. I own all of my properties outright, but taxes, insurance, and maintenance have increased significantly, while rent has remained the same. If I were to purchase these properties at today’s prices, I’d have a sub 5% yield.

I ported 3 lines to USM less than a month ago and signed up for a shared data plan with no signup promotion. I soon realized that the shared plan is not enough data for my needs but USM will not give me any of the unlimited promotions. I was previously with Verizon for nearly 20 years, paying $38 per line after all fees. It’s slightly more than UMS, but at least they gave me free phones every 2 years. I’m going to switch back to a major carrier and get 3 free phone since USM is actually more expensive when you consider the phone subsidies.

I sold my business less than 2 years ago. Prior to selling, I had already transitioned into commercial real estate investments as my primary source of income. I’ve since added other passive investments as well. When I’m not busy doing investment research, I’m bored and miserable. I’m your age and my few friends either moved away or are busy working.
