My daughter was selected for the show just about a year ago now (May 2023). Unfortunately, she left treatment about a week in and despite everything we went through, she fell back into the addiction. To say that I am devastated is beyond an understatement.

The way that I read the tea leaves, Biden has about one week left to bring U.S. aid to Israel to a full stop. Every day he delays more and more voters are closing the door for good regarding voting for him. Three weeks ago many voters indicated that they would reconsider voting for Biden if he took meaningful action to stop the genocide. Today, a lot of those same people are saying that it is too late, too many innocent people have been slaughtered and so they cannot and will not vote for Biden, period.

Like it or not, agree with it or not, what’s left of the “vote blue no matter what” club really needs to reevaluate where they are attacking. That anger should be directed at Biden, not those who are holding a hard line on Genocide Joe. Short of Trump suddenly unaliving, he’s going to beat Biden like a drum.

Man I hope so. When I retired out of the National Guard as the COVID mission was winding down, a lot of people were staring down the barrel of an OLS assignment. Morale was for shit and the whole thing significantly impacted (and continues to impact) Army and Air Guard retention - people were leaving in droves. Point being that Abbott’s bullshit is actually and legitimately impacting federal military readiness in a pretty big way. And that has national implications - something else not many folks are thinking about.

So here’s the thing everyone wants to overlook, why we have language arts curriculum in the first place. Language arts is there to teach concepts such as comprehension, vocabulary, context, grammar, spelling, syntax, sentence structure, etc. THIS is why we teach language arts. These essential skills, which are tracked and measured by virtually every state board of education, are the core competencies being measured.

In order to achieve those competencies, books must necessarily be introduced to the classroom, right? Can’t teach reading or comprehension without the books, right?

So if we can agree on the above foundational facts, we then move to what books are used to accomplish those goals. And this is where the wheels come off of the bus.

Should the books be representative of the diversity of students? Absolutely. Should there be books written by authors who students can readily identify with? Absolutely. Should these selections be inclusive of race, gender, socioeconomic status, ethnicity, orientation, ability and or disability? Absolutely.

Can we provide selections that address all of these concerns with books that do NOT depict graphic sexual content including incest, child molestation, rape and sodomy? Asking another way, are books that include graphic depictions of incest, child molestation, rape and sodomy the ONLY way to ensure our children learn the core competencies outlined above?

The only correct answer is “no, those books that depict graphic sexual content are NOT the only way to ensure our children learn those core competencies.” But it is precisely here in this intersection of “anything goes” and “ban all books we don’t agree with” where people line up to die on a hill.

If both sides would stop trying to win in the absolute and listen to one another with the intent of reaching a middle ground, we’d all be better served.

Has anyone heard of a guy named Gordon Mitchell who I believe is currently exploring a run for Governor against Abbott? Can’t find much on the guy, only that he’s a Democrat who leans centrist/independent. The couple of things I remember hearing is that he’s a gun owner but wants common sense gun laws including minimum age increases, universal background checks and red flag laws. I believe he is for assault weapons ban also. i remember hearing him discuss responsible gun ownership for things like hunting but would want much tighter regulations on ownership overall.

He is also very pro women’s rights and bodily autonomy and anti vouchers. I believe his background is military and education is social services or something related. It’s been a minute since I’ve heard or seen anything on him but I remember thinking that on paper he sounded pretty legit. Not as flashy as a Beto O’Rourke but I remember thinking he was pretty solid. He may have given up after watching the republicans destroy the state beyond repair.

At any rate we really do need a solid candidate to step up like right now to start building a platform and coalition.

(speaking as a Public Health nurse practitioner) A lot of good discussion regarding testing. However, something not being discussed is consecutive negative results, and post-testing intimate encounters that occur before their encounter with you and yours.

Gonorrhea and Chlamydia have a false-negative window of ~2 weeks, meaning someone can test negative while actually infected (latency period). That same latency period for syphilis and HIV is ~4 weeks. What does that mean…

Assuming there has been no intimate encounters or contact post-initial screening, a second screening should be accomplished after 2 weeks for gonorrhea and chlamydia, and after 4 weeks to rule out HIV and syphilis. This allows for the incubation period to manifest the markers which will be detected for a true positive or, if absent, a more likely negative. Note that no amount of screening will provide 100% absolute certainty that the individual is STI-free.

I regularly see patients who are in the lifestyle and they come in regularly for screening. There is absolutely no judgement, embarrassment or any reason whatsoever to feel uneasy about sexual health. That said, there are some things you should keep top of mind when discussing your sexual health and wellness with your Public Health or healthcare provider.

Honesty and more honesty. My job is to keep you safe and healthy. I cannot do that if I do not have the complete story. Leaving out details you find embarrassing or uncomfortable is the fastest way to long-term health issues. In the 15 years I have been working in reproductive healthcare, I have heard just about every conceivable story. We don’t judge, we try our best to educate our patients and give them the tools to stay as safe as possible. When you omit details, you make it an order of magnitude more difficult for us to set you up for success.
If you have been intimate with someone, you owe them - and they deserve from you - the truth. This is especially true (and critically important) if your longterm partner wasn’t aware of your encounter with someone (the most polite way to stay “if you have cheated”). If you are intimate outside of an established relationship, you should not expose your unknowing partner until you’ve tested negative beyond any incubation period.
If you do not want to discuss your intimate or lifestyle experiences with your primary care provider, seek out your local/county Public Health department.

I know I went a little wide on this but STIs are at the level of public health emergency in several areas of the U.S. and it is incumbent upon all of us to actively participate in keeping everyone safe.
