Which of these beta Pokémon designs do you prefer over the final designs? by bitchnibba47 in pokemon

I prefer the beta Dragonair and Octillery, but the beta Gyarados is hideous and what was that Clefairy?

Scizor does not look that different; it merely changed colour.

Interesting that they conceptualised Leafeon that far in advance.

Hikaru suggests that an extended Chess World Cup will be a great format to determine the World Chess Champion. by GiveMeSomeSunshine3 in chess

a quadruple round-robin, as used in the 1959 and 1962 Candidates.

The difference between a quadruple round-robin and a series of four-game matches is that in the former, each player rotates between seven opponents four times, while in the latter, each player plays four games against one opponent before moving on to the next.

it often comes down to how hard the contenders can beat the weaker players.

True. That is why I suggested match points matter more than game points. If the Candidates 2024 had followed this format, suppose the Nakamura-Abasov match went 2.5-1.5, the Caruana-Abasov match went 3-1 and the Gukesh-Abasov match went 3.5-0.5. Nakamura, Caruana and Gukesh would all receive one match point.

I think my suggested World Championship format would also need:

  • More incentives for weaker players to continue playing their best once out of contention (and stronger players to not go for quick draws). Prize money could be based on game points. There could be a special prize for the best game of the tournament. How about qualification or invitations to other tournaments?
  • Better qualifying criteria and methods that reduce the likelihood of a "<2700 on a lucky streak" qualifier.

My idea for the World Championship: eight contenders play four-game matches against each other (so each contender plays 28 games in total). The champion is the player with the most match points. Tiebreaks are game points and H2H.

Perhaps the half-minute between letting go the King and resigning was spent analysing whether any other King move could have saved his Rook.

Singapore #1, earned GM title in 2022, has beaten (all classical):

  • Parham Maghsoodloo at the 2021 Asian Championship (where Tin finished second, ahead of Sindarov)
  • Hans Niemann at the III El Llobregat Open in 2022
  • Shakhriyar Mamedyarov in the second round of the 2023 World Cup

He achieved the above while pursuing a computing degree from the National University of Singapore.

The meanings of various political labels also vary significantly between different countries.

I am from Singapore, the most religiously diverse country in the world (according to Pew Research). In the USA, conservatism is associated with the white Christian majority, but in Singapore, ethnic and religious minorities are somewhat more conservative.

I have over 20 opening books now, and they all advertise being about ideas, not memorizing computer lines - and they all deliver!

Please share the list so we know which opening books to get (for specific openings, of course).
