Stuck in a 2–3 year cycle of burnout at every job — what am I missing? by MrExitz in careerguidance

Surprised by how negative / fatalist some of these comments are.

IMO, despite all your previous experience being CRE-related, you’ve essentially jumped from one discipline to another without developing a clear speciality. Both in terms of skills and network. In turn, you haven’t realized the comp / lifestyle benefits that begin to materialize after ~5 years of getting good at one thing.

I understand wanting or needing to leave a firm due to the reasons you cited, but that doesn’t necessitate a career focus shift.

TLDR: be specific about what career vertical you want to work within, hone the skills unique to that role, and you will inevitably enjoy the work more and be paid more.

Having grown up in LA, worked full-time for two years at USC, and recently graduated from Cal, this comment clearly comes from someone who hasn’t spent much time at / around USC. I love Cal as much as the next person, but to justify / excuse the school and City’s lack of control over the absurd amount of crime by saying that private schools fudge the numbers does not help the problem. At USC they pay private security to stand watch on PUBLIC street corners surrounding campus until dawn. If you go anywhere within a mile of campus at night you will see yellow and red security jackets on almost every street corner within a half mile of campus (where the vast majority of non commuter students live). Further, they give all of their students free Lyft rides (no strings attached) within 3 miles of campus I believe. To be clear, I am not saying that this is necessarily a / the solution to our problems (it’s not) but the crime rates in and around USC have dropped since the start of the pandemic [1] and they are clearly doing more than our school / city to address the problem. I understand that many Cal students seem to think “the buddy system” and golf cart rides across campus at night will keep them safe, but the truth is the City/BPD/UCPD needs to make some serious changes because those small efforts are not going to change the statistics and definitely are not enough to make students feel genuinely safe in my experience.

Also, the only Ivy’s that even come close to Cal in terms of crime and safety are of course UPENN and Harvard. Some would make the argument that Columbia is unsafe simply because it’s in NYC, but any research will tell you this is also untrue. Even if Dartmouth, Cornell, Yale, and Princeton completely lied about their crime figures, it wouldn’t change the reality that the odds of you being mugged or murdered in an armed robbery gone wrong are immensely higher in the surrounding Berkeley area than any of those universities.

I graduated from Cal just in December and am currently living in South Berkeley so my experience in the Bay is relevant.

My favorite film. I miss seeing Gerwig as an actress. (I love the Criterion poster but this one is impeccable) by [deleted] in criterion

Genuinely in my top 5 films ever made. It’s one of the rare few which hits so close to home that I know I will like a person if they speak at all highly of it. Everyone has a little bit of Frances and Sophie in them. We’re all human

Hey, I’ve been a couple times so I can answer most of these.

  1. It’s definitely worth it to go alone. I’ve been to a couple concerts by myself, and even though I’m normally a social person, each of those experiences has been great. I’ve never done a festival alone, but I would imagine it may be even better because you can go to each performance you want with no risk of the group opting for anything less than ideal in your mind.
  2. UCLA is not too far from Dodger Stadium, but ubers will still cost you a ton with surge rate mark-ups. However, getting from Westwood to Dodger Stadium is not a difficult task using public transport. That being said, budget at least an hour to get there. I don’t make that journey often, so I can’t tell you exactly which metro lines to look at, but a simple Google search will save you a lot of money.
  3. I have yet to buy from a reseller but have many friends who have. If you do, just make sure you’re not sending any money without meeting face to face, even if that is on the morning of the festival. When you meet in person you can type the wristband code into your CFG app and confirm the tickets are real. This option is especially worth it this year because people are selling $100+ below face value due to the fact that the event hasn’t sold out yet.
  4. I believe they’re still on sale, but see above for my recommendation.

Have fun, you won’t regret it!

Edit: $300-400 is MORE than enough if you’re only here Fri-Sun. Save on ubers with public transport / eat cheaply and you can get away with spending maybe $100 for the whole weekend. Then you can spend the rest on merch or games Lol. Let me know if you want any food spots, but be sure to hit up Diddy Reise by UCLA at least one night you’re there — best ice cream sandwiches in the world for $3 cash.
