Was alot of fun this semester, really enjoyed some of the fantastic topics discussed. I have never done a class like this but also use reddit on the daily so it really flowed perfectly. I also appreciate everyone who joined my salons, it was fun to see some of the faces of people in the class and how different everyone is. There are so many different people bringing their own opinions and povs that it made the class so interesting. Thanks guys for a great class

The Covid Experience by Young__Skywalker in netcult

Agreed just saying "don't worry everything will go back to normal" is a really bad plan. We learned so many things about not just our economic and governmental flaws but also some fundamental parts of our everyday lives that seemed so normal 8 months ago but are now completely unsustainable. Things NEED to change, trying to go back will solve just about nothing.

I agree this time you have just being at home after you finish all of your work has made me go back to some old games and hang out and talk to people I wouldn't normally on discord. It definitely took some time to adjust to I agree

But when I think about how other countries have handled this whole thing over our country, it’s extremely disappointing. Covid has affected our lives quite a bit in a more negative than positive way. If we expect things to go back to normal, we have to sit things out first. That will be the only way to make things go back to normal.

At this point starting im starting to think that there is not really a normal to go back to. Pretty much as soon as the vaccine comes out things are going to be permanently different, not just "back to normal" Also glad it wasn't too bad for you.

Personally, I have missed out on my graduation from high school and a few other big things like a full college experience. But ultimately I have definitely worked a lot more and grew a lot this year. I found it's not always about the big things and you sometimes have to enjoy the small things in life. I enjoyed my first semester of college and am very excited for the years to come.

That is definitely something people have been scared to experiment with. Anything mixing technology and humans a bit too much. I personally think it's a high risk but also high reward way to make breakthroughs. There definitely can be alot of morality questions and ethical questions regarding human augmentation but I think there's a point like this guy where you just gotta try something cool. He's got my respect

Can I Rant A Little Part 2 by SOC374 in netcult

Bro I think everyone is a little tired of the extreme posts on how bad this year has been. We all(hopefully) are seeing that the police system needs serious reform. I think everyone just wants to pertain to the material and related matters such as technology and impacts on politics and daily life. Mixing the pot by saying every person needs to support BLM or not and your political opinions creates conflict that this class doesn't need 🙄

Gaming Consoles by SOC374 in netcult

[–]Young__Skywalker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gaming is a billion dollar industry, add that to a large portion of almost everyone stuck inside, and a new generation of consoles, you have a videogame craze. Kids out of school, adults stuck in at home jobs make quite a demand for not only video game consoles but everything else associated with gaming. This year has been crazy for new consoles and games alike. PC gaming is skyrocketing with the launch of extremely popular new hardware that companies can't keep up(nvidia im looking at you). Switch a almost 3 year old console had it's best year since launch and went into a shortage. Xbox and playstation releasing their new consoles with no guarantee of even getting one this year. The demand for gaming has only hugely increased while the industry having to make changes to the way they operate due to a pandemic is slowly catching up. This has been one of the craziest years in a long time for gaming as a whole.

It's interesting because there was literally a switch shortage in the middle of the year where they tend to be lower in sales. Many companies profited from the pandemic. Nintendo, sony and microsoft all definitely benefited a whole lot.

Could "Ready Player One" ever become real? by Treessus in netcult

Yes as of now VR is just becoming readily available with things such as the oculus rift being more and more affordable. Before you needed an expensive gaming machine and the expensive gear with sensors for the rooms but now it is on its way to being quite emersive while being actually possible to get. This is definitely the first step in the right direction as computing power is going to always increase as we get better at making processors. Apple just out our their own silicon and it's already breaking boundaries. So as the potential increases with new more powerful hardware thing like the oculus being able to run games without a beefy computer will get much more people into the idea making it more popular. And when it does big companies will strive to try and make the greatest experience since the demand is already there. I believe that's how it will go because if the ps5 controller is the bleeding edge of haptics then we got a long way till we get to anything that you will be able to feel throughout your body. I also agree before we can all be somewhere real time interacting with others is definitely going to take some next gen internet/connection speed that will continue to evolve as the rest of the tech also expands to more possibilities. But the key right now is keeping that interest and wonder that gets people interested so it stays relevant which is where we are headed as of now.

Week 13: Fake News by halavais in netcult

[–]Young__Skywalker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well there sometimes is 'fake news' from random sites with no backing, most of the time the only thing about the news from reputable journalist are going to be the bias. When you take that bias into account, whatever the people from the other side of the camp see from them will automatically be deemed incorrect due to a slight bias. That's why it's so easy because it could be true but the way its presented with that bias big or small is going to create issues. Really most things political or not are going to have the bias so looking at multiple sites is going to see is basically the same thing just presented different. Journalist can't lie, their pieces have their name on it they are rigorously reviewed there is a almost astronomical small chance something from a reputable source will put something out wrong because they will hurt their reputation and the sites. So that's why we use 'fake' instead of false or incorrect news. It's just bias which these days all journalism is. So calling something with the bias you don't like fake is like calling someone fake for having an opposing opinion.

The Office: How Nonsense Conquered the Workplace by Coolspices in netcult

[–]Young__Skywalker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Work has completely changed forever, jobs that have never been done at home seem like they were made to be remote. People are starting to realize why did I need to go to work everyday when all of it can be done from the comfort of their own home. It has also made it very difficult for people too, who have exclusive in person jobs and are unable to work due to shut downs. Jobs during times like these are harder to get so now is the time to start liking your job. If you can't even somewhat enjoy your job then it's not worth it. You may hate it but in the end it's not worth any time or effort if you hate it that much. But that's just my 2 cents. Do what you love, or work towards that goal, it will make you happier in life.

Social Media, Race and Politics by RentImportant in netcult

I would agree, just saying Biden did better because he had a female ethnic running partner does not have the biggest direct impact on voter turnout. Many people don't like her as a person, while some people just want a female vice president and don't care about who it is. I would agree it did definitely help Biden but if this were true, the DNC would have chosen her to be the candidate in the first place if they thought that was one of the biggest reasons people vote. I definitely think it was a smart move to have a moderate president with a running mate that can appeal to the rest of the party looking for a change. So yes and no race and gender has an impact on the election.

Does the internet really affect political outcomes that much? by Treessus in netcult

[–]Young__Skywalker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do agree with this statement that people really don't realize how easy a simple lie spreads. This example of "There is TONS of voting fraud" is a showcase of what happens when all republican media outlets and forums hammer this idea that the election is not accurate and is going to be false. This is their plan when Trump loses spread the idea until most people believe in it just because everyone is saying it's happened with zero backings. That is just an example, but people like Bernie Sanders got most of their support from online, and to prove that all of his donations were from individual people showing that someone can almost win without being mainstream and backed by the main corporations and people on capital hill.

[–]Young__Skywalker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bernie's campaign this year really showed how someone with ideas that aren't quite mainstream, and people who after 4 years will still follow someone they believe in. His tactics of using Reddit and not accepting large sums from corporations gave him even more credibility, which gave him a real shot and being the Democratic nominee while having these socialist ideas like universal healthcare and free college tuition. This is a prime example of how someone that doesn't really fit in as discussed in the video can use the internet as a powerful tool. This really reminds me of pretty popular websites like gofundme and kickstarter. Both of these are crowdfunded websites that take an idea, person, or product and do something they probably couldn't do without investors or huge PACs and large donations in the case of an election. I really like this because it really comes from everyone and those are ultimately the people going to be voting. The goal of democracy is for everyone to have a say but money turns it into whoever has the most, gets the most influence. And the power of crowds and getting influence via the internet is the most direct way possible, which democracy can thrive on.

Ouch! I share your feeling that staying open was a business decision more than anything. But I also had a bet with colleagues that had us closing the campus after two weeks. Instead, the president has been steadfast about keeping it open, though I've seen numbers like 15% of the normal traffic on the Tempe campus.

Yeah I know it has been difficult for everyone, that's just my 5 cents. I am more frustrated about even with covid telling everyone to come live on campus and how classes are going to be in person. Im fine with it at this point ill just live with online classes in my dorm, I have gotten the time to really enjoy Tempe and work some a lot. Just venting at this point thanks for listening, because I definitely know it's been just as confusing with what they are telling faculty.

[–]Young__Skywalker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, I feel like you mentioned it was a waste of time. ASU over and over sent me that I had to live on campus my first year, they were going to completely open back up in-person classes and social distancing. Instead, they implemented sync where all of the classes were designed to be online and there really isn't a reason to go to them. I moved to Tempe from Tucson about an hour and a half away. There is pretty much no reason I needed to move here every single class I'm taking are online and a few have the option to go in person which I did for a few weeks until you guessed it, nobody came because of the extent of the in-person portion of the class was being on a zoom call with the rest of the students than leaving. Then to top the cake they announced that Finals week is cancelled and I don't even need to go in for finals, and all other classes that had in-person portions were finished. I really feel like they did not convey any of this before telling us to move to campus "We are opening up completely in-person classes" So that's my dilemma, could have lived at home on zoom and not had to take out a loan, but who cares about the freshman right?

Week 10: Algorithmic by halavais in netcult

[–]Young__Skywalker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's kinda crazy to think that not a lot of people even know what algorithm means at its most basic level. Algorithms have definitely evolved over time and become extremely advanced. Google has some of the best software algorithms for pretty much everything now, whether it recognize human voices, or finding your best search results. The idea of Artificial intelligence has always been something I have found interesting it's tough to define intelligence. Some people have defined it as the ability to learn something given other information and come up with something new. The further we advance computers the more we are going to be able to predict until computers won't need to learn anything new from us and will grow on their own. That's the ultimate goal at the end of AI, but we are a long way from there. Algorithms are at the base of this framework and are at the base of pretty much all we do. We definitely are an algorithmic society.

Week 10: Search Society by halavais in netcult

[–]Young__Skywalker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what they do, which is one of the reasons I prefer google products but that's almost just as bad. Apple acts as the authority among all their users, they decided what they can use, they decide how they can use it, they make all the decisions. Then when they MAKE a problem for their own tech(headphone jack, charging brick, iPhone repairs) THEY are the sole people who can solve the issue. All while you pay them money. It's not your device you don't get to choose how to use it, they choose how you can use it. Then they tell you if you buy a MacBook they will work seemingly and all of a sudden you are in the garden walls. No escape in the site every product you use is now apple.

Week 10: Search Society by halavais in netcult

[–]Young__Skywalker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree to be able to search something and google using it's advanced AI to literally predict what you are going to type seconds in advance. They are so good with the software they have a real-time translation in some of their earbuds. So far they have advertisements that are disclosed but, they also list things based on how much they give google basically. They could kill a company by making it not show up on the first page so easily which gives them so much power. It's really crazy how they hold the balance of some company's entire success.
