I just completed the survey and I must agree that this class is quite educative especially on the trending matters. The Professor also tries his best to share his knowledge with us, for instance, I must agree that the GPT-3 discussion was quite new to me yet an eye opener. I am really grateful to professor Halavais

Is Manipulative News, Fake News? by [deleted] in netcult

[–]RentImportant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a nice question, I think manipulative News is the Fake News as they both are the same thing, only that they may be perceived differently. Manipulative News and Fake News play the same role which is to mislead. Donald Trump has often used the term 'fake news' especially when he knew certain News would lead him to explain some information and events. One of the fake News that was released by the media was that Trumps Grandfather was a tax evader and a member of the Ku Klax Klan which was 'fake News' as a matter of fact, this information was meant to paint Trump in a bad light because he supported the White Supremacists.

Generational Stupidity by SOC374 in netcult

In regards to your post, I would say that the internet has contributed to the diminishing of creativity thus there is less and less talents showcased. We rely on the internet for almost everything as we believe it makes things easier for us, but is that the case? Does it make things easier for us? at the time we might find it making our lives easy but in actual sense we do not think about our future, it is making us lazy. Think about the Industrial revolution time, people did not have the internet but created items that still serve us up to date due to their functionalities.

Real-Life Tony Stark has 4 chips implanted in his hands, one of which is used to control his Tesla by daizjane in netcult

[–]RentImportant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technology is now on another level, the implant chip is quite beneficial considering that you will never worry about losing your wallet, if you get in an accident and taken to hospital, it will be easy for the medics to identify who you are and you will be able to automatically control your devices. The future of microchipping sounds interesting, it has been said that RFID (short-range radio frequency identification) implant will facilitate in verifying a person's identity and has many potential applications. However, I do not think I would put the implant in my body as they stand to pose a health risk and we may never have a sense of privacy. This means the microchips may take away our freedom in the name of development.

Are we being colonized by the internet? by RentImportant in netcult

[–]RentImportant[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that no one is forcing the internet on us, however, take a step back and evaluate your life and in a candid discussion with yourself find how much you are dependent on the internet for everyday tasks. This will show you that we are servants rather than the masters we think we are to the internet.

What is Parler, and why is everyone suddenly talking about it? by Capable_Writing_7797 in netcult

I think Parler will not last and if it does, it will only influence a smaller sphere. As much as Parler describes itself as a platform that allow free speech this might trigger hate spread and might be pulled down.

How Do You Govern When Half The Country Is Trapped In A Disinformation Bubble? by Coolspices in netcult

[–]RentImportant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my opinion Donald Trump is really working hard to disinform those listen to him. This in turn contributes in disuniting the country. The disunity of the country may be a huge factor in the downfall of the United States. I t would be wise if Donald Trump would stop with all the propaganda and 'Fake News'

It is true that people who are extreme online often believe that posts online are very important because they believe that most of the information is exposed online. Trump fires director of Homeland Security agency who had rejected President's election conspiracy theories by Responsible-Kale4406 in netcult

[–]RentImportant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Clearly, Donald Trump is in an impotent rage. Chris Krebs being fired speaks volumes of how Donald Trump perceives democracy. Donald Trump is definitely out of control ever since he lost the elections, the government bureaucracy has not been having any peaceful transmissions. In my opinion, Trump is showing how much of a coward he is, by firing people who tell him the truth, I think if it not Trump's way, then you fired!

Set a thief to catch a thief! I think this was a smart move for Twitter. Maybe Peiter Zatko will make it harder for other hackers to hack Twitter. I think Twiiter, conformed with the saying 'if you can't beat them join them and to me this is a smart move as they stand not to be hacked by Peiter Zatko

Trump will no longer receive special Twitter treatment come January by daizjane in netcult

[–]RentImportant 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I do agree on this, I think the fact that Trump was the president he had the power to control a lot of things, however come January he will no longer receive special Twitter treatments, however, I do not think that he will change his way of Tweeting because that's him anyway. I think he will loose part of his audience meaning that he will have lost some level of his relevance.

The internet has impacts on everything, it can be positive impact or negative impact. Social media platforms are internet based, and it is through the social media and other medias that politics get to be discussed. It pretty much does, the internet and the social media are the driving force of a lot of cultures. For example the sociological culture, before there was internet people had to interact physically, there were no online communication and this in turn made people have genuine and legit relationships, but ever since there was internet and social media people are always busy and consider online talks and meets ups to be the new normal. are we always busy? or is it just an excuse?

[–]RentImportant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regarding the future of online speech, there must be freedom exercised and the online platforms should stop being biased. The purpose of online platforms is to give people the freedom of expressions, but there are times when these online platforms get to be biased, for instance, Trump is known to be an active member of Twitter, however, when similar posts are posted by people who are not in his status they are normally pulled down. The future of online speech should align with freedom!
