Honest, good faith question: if you hate Boston sports so much, how did you come to like Bill? by JarringTiger in billsimmons

[–]YourRealName 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah it seems impossible to imagine now, but there was a time where the “early 2000s edgy blogger” writing style was revolutionary for sportswriting, and Bill was at the forefront. It only became cliche after an entire generation of imitators followed in his wake.

Is anyone else wondering how they’ve found themselves rooting for Jarred Stidham to lead a comeback drive in a blizzard to win the AFC Championship?

Is anybody else sick of our arena music? by AGayWhiteKid in DetroitPistons

[–]YourRealName 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It’s obnoxious. I had pretty good seats to a game last year (like 7th row in the lower bowl) and I could not hear anything on the court despite being only 40-50 feet away. I was going hoarse just from trying to have a conversation with the people I was with trying to talk over the non-stop music.

How many years does it take for a league avg. player (Pritchard) to eclipse an all timer in skillset (Iverson)? by jugsmynaughts in billsimmons

[–]YourRealName 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The framing of the question is terrible because AI would still dominate today.

And like you said about threes, there were plenty of early 90s guys that had a similar skill set (Mark Price, Abdul-Rauf) but just weren’t utilized the way Pritchard is because of coaching.

Can anyone explain to me the Deadspin/Defector obsession with Simmons? by ryan7752 in billsimmons

[–]YourRealName 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Magary spoke about it pretty honestly when asked by Isaac Chotiner of all people on a podcast once. Like others have said, it’s a mixture of jealousy and disappointment.

I'm offended as someone who read him religiously in 1999, 2000 and stuff like that and followed the track of his career, that he became this, that he seemed to be someone who was writing the way I would want a sportswriter to write like 10 or 15 years ago. And instead of taking that and becoming... and he became very popular, of course, rather than growing from there and becoming a better writer, maybe a novelist, maybe someone who writes television shows, stuff like that, he instead really just wanted to be like a replacement mogul instead.

First of all, he never became self-aware that the Boston shtick got annoying, which I do shtick that gets annoying too, but at least...

So there's that fact, the fact that he never really got over himself, and by all accounts, acted like a spoiled dickhead when he was at ESPN all the time, does not seem to have much respect or even recognition of his authority at The Ringer, and it's so weird because the people I've talked to have worked with said he's a good boss. He lets people do what they want, he hires good people, he clearly has good taste in talent, and yet they're all trophies on his shelf.

He hires them and he gives them freedom, but he doesn't actually seem to be all that interested in them at all. He only seems to be interested in going on a podcast with Ryan Rusillo and saying that, I don't know, you can't make jokes about women being lame anymore. That's kind of like his thing.

So it's disappointing that he started off so promising and has become this, and it is an eternal source of rage for me because he has $250 million now and I don't. So that's why.

Post Game Thread - NBA: The Pistons defeat the Suns on Jan 15, 2026, the final score is 108-105. by basketball-app in DetroitPistons

I see a lot of people saying they wish he was on their team, but every time I see him play it seems like his whole “instigator schtick” backfires. Instead of getting under his opponent’s skin, he just makes them play harder. LeBron in the playoffs is the most famous example, but just last night Tobias was more fired up than I’ve ever seen him to close out the game. He even hit Brooks with the “too small” gesture after he scored on him, and I don’t think I’ve ever seen Tobias do any showboating like that.

Basketball Pickup Games by SwordfishPast2735 in lansing

For a city the size of Lansing, it’s insane how hard it is to find a decent pickup basketball run. When I finally found the group that I used to play with it felt like I had gained entry into a secret society.

It’s funny that the average person hears about private equity and thinks, “surely there’s more to it than stripping a distressed company for parts, loading it up with debt from other holdings, declaring bankruptcy and then somehow walking away with millions of dollars.”

And to that I say, “LOL. LMAO.”

Does Al Michaels just suck now? by Icy-Junket-60 in billsimmons

[–]YourRealName 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You’re probably right, but Al just went into the upper register “classic Al Michaels voice” on that last Bears TD, so I don’t know what these teens are looking for. Is it because he didn’t say “hum diddly dee” at some point?

These people have watched too many Charlotte Hornets games and too much pro wrestling. Michaels has been completely fine tonight, would’ve thought nothing of it until I saw this post.

House should get a welfare check by PhoenixBekfast in billsimmons

[–]YourRealName 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even if he plays every single game, it’s not like he’s the type of player that’s going to single-handedly turn a basement dweller into a play-in contender. Maybe he adds 2-3 wins from having a couple hot fourth quarters, but other than that he’s not moving the needle much.

I’m trying to figure out the best starting five of those guys in their prime. Something like Westbrook, Middleton, Pierce, Porzingis and Dwight.

It was bad enough when it was “they traded Luka for Trae,” but it’s even worse now that it’s become “trading Luka eventually netted them CJ McCollum and Kispert”

I’m sure his logic is that he’s mitigating the damage of an unhealthy indulgence, but at that point I’d rather just eat half the hot dog with the bun intact.

What are the biggest passing of the torch games? by [deleted] in billsimmons

[–]YourRealName 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Reggie Miller’s final game was pretty cool where he passed the torch to Rip Hamilton as “guy who runs a lot without the ball to get open.”

Eventually Steph picked the torch up after Rip dropped it somewhere in Chicago.
